Netherlands: The Lock Born in the Juliana Canal in August 2010

The Juliana Canal (Dutch: Julianakanaal), named after Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, is a 36 km long canal in the southern Netherlands, providing a bypass of a not navigable section of the river Meuse between Maastricht and Maasbracht. It is an important transport connection between the ports of the Rhine delta and the industrial areas of southern Limburg and southern Belgium.
In this canal there are two locks: in Born and Maasbracht.
Both locks have floating bollards installed.
The lock in Born overcomes a height of 11.35 meters.
Renovation and enlargement of the lock Born.
In 2009 renovation works started at the lock chambers in Born. This includes the renovation of the western lock chamber, the stabilizing of the chamber walls and the renovation and enlargement of the central chamber to a length of 225 meters. The chamber which is currently being under renovation, is closed for shipping. The other lock chambers will remain available for shipping. When we passed the east chamber of this lock in August 2010, the central chamber was under renovation. The enlargement of the length of the central lock chamber to 225 meters, makes it possible that vessels with a length of 190 meters, a width of 11.4 meters and a depth of 3.5 meters can pass the lock and so have access to the waterway.
Werkzaamheden aan sluis Born
In 2009 is er gestart met werkzaamheden aan het sluizencomplex in Born. Eerst wordt de renovatie aan de westelijke sluiskolk uitgevoerd. Daarna worden de remming- en geleidewerken van het gehele complex uitgebreid. De kolkwanden worden gestabiliseerd en de middenkolk wordt gerenoveerd en verlengd tot 225 meter. Als laatste vindt de renovatie van de oostkolk plaats. De sluiskolk waaraan op dat moment wordt gewerkt is voor een bepaalde tijd voor het scheepvaartverkeer gestremd. De andere sluiskolken blijven wel beschikbaar voor de scheepvaart. Toen wij in augustus 2010 deze sluis passeerden, werd er gewerkt aan de middenkolk. Door de verlenging van de middenkolk tot 225 meter is het mogelijk dat schepen met een lengte van 190 meter, een breedte van 11,4 meter en een diepgang van 3,5 meter de sluis kunnen passeren en zo toegang hebben tot de vaarweg.
