Kirye's little attempts to move her eyes independently are so endearing, I'm glad we aren't losing any of the silliness that goes hand in hand with the unrelenting horror in Ito's work
I love that little detail of her attempting to spin her eyes like he was describing. It’s kind of silly to say, but it’s small stuff like that that makes me so excited for this adaptation and confident that the people creating it actually care and are going to deliver a fantastic show.
Absolutely. The fact it's not such a literal adaptation and they felt it was necessary to add small character moments really pushes the detail from page to animation. Incredible stuff.
This is the exact style in which any animated Junji Ito adaptation ought to be made in! The horror is so inherent to the manga style, so why not just animate in a manga style? The director knows what they're doing. This is beautiful
Colin Stetson as composer is a stroke of genius, his style heavily incorporates circular breathing and lots of arpeggio patterns that perfectly fit the idea of getting pulled into a whirlpool.
Genius also worked in Hereditary and Midsommar. He's so good at making unsettling and unnerving music. It's genuinely nerve wrecking and chills inducing.
Every adaptation I've seen of Junji Ito's drawings into another medium has always felt like it lost something in the translation... except for this one. This is the first time I've ever seen anyone make his art look as good in motion as it is on the still page. I'm deeply impressed

i LOVE that they kept it in black and white, they can focus more on the details of the animation aswell as it's more true to the manga and it fits the horror vibe more
The director saw how literally every Junji Ito's adaptation review are "the art style stuck, they can't replicate the manga's amazing horror art" and then did the most amazing looking anime adaptation of uzumaki ever
Not just Junji Ito. Anime and horror have very rarely mixed well. Seems to me that this director has been working hard to make it work. His previous series, Flowers of Evil, was genuinely unsettling, and even the much calmer Mushishi had this certain haunting atmosphere. If there's one anime director who's qualified to make this happen, it's Hiroshi Nagahama.
@@cybertruckeralpha I think the art styles seen in the late 80s and early 90s lend to horror very well, and we are only just now beginning to see the digital age reach and surpass that quality. but it is very expensive, and that is why it is not often done.
I am glad they aren't taking any liberties with changing the art style and designs like they did in the previous adaptations which failed miserably. When it comes to Ito's work, just literally copy the manga as it is since it is already perfect and turn it into animation.
I missed when studios/creative teams stuck to the "it'll be ready when it's ready!" approach without fear of forced crunch time to meet a deadline. This was worth the wait.
Japanese animation has always been dictated by deadlines. The only time it wasnt was the 80s era of OVAs where they could basically take as long as they needed due to income from VHS rentals making more money than TV serialization.
@@kingjoe3rdHave you seen the other Junji Ito anime? Those were all made in the east, and they are all of subpar quality. It's weird that you are trying to diss the Western way of doing things when Japan isn't all that different.
@@graphite7898I mean, Avatar probably has better animation than a lot of animes. Apparently TLAB doesn’t use still frames that much, scenes are constantly moving even for small stuff.
I really like the art style, I feel the black and whiteness is such a big part of Ito’s style and trying to add color always makes it feel slightly off. I could definitely see this style being used for other manga adaptations with a similar style. Like Berserk or Vagabond.
@CoraTheCobra He plays the sax and "sings" at the same time during the same recording, for this soundtrack. The track is called Spindrift. He is amazingly talented
I will wait as long as it takes for more of this, Hiroshi Nagahama did an amazing job with Flowers Of Evil and Mushishi so I have faith this will excellent too.
@@pastry9849 Nah, Junji Ito himself literally said he was a fan of his adaptation of Flowers of Evil which is why he was happy for him to direct this project. You can honestly see a lot of the art style of Flowers of Evil in this clip in terms of the movement, I wouldn't be surprised if they used rotoscoping in part for this too. It's cool to see this sort of experimentation with the medium.
This has got to be one of the most unique adaptation. Sometimes the terror in Junji Ito's work is best seen in the manga. So by literally bringing the manga to life, the animation can keep the eerie yet intriguing vibe that Ito's work have.
This looks way better than how i imagined it would be. This is literally one of the coolest looking animation that i’ve seen. All Junji Ito adaptations should look like this. It’s gonna be worth the wait.
Undeniable proof that Junji Ito adaptations should be kept in black and white. A lot of what makes his work characteristic and striking is how he uses ink and shadowing, and a good chunk of that's lost when you add in solid color.
The little flourish at 1:28 where Kirie tries to make her eyes rotate independently of each other is such a cute and fun detail. And it feels like something a real person would do on hearing that. I have never seen anything like that in an anime before. This show is in very capable hands.
If they're going to be adding little details like that, it makes me want to watch it even more. I admit at first I just thought it was going to be a copy-paste of the manga with music (however great it may be) and voice acting. I was still hyped, of course, but now even more so !!! hope they expend on the lore
@@NiRvAnA6890Then don’t watch it? Maybe some of us would like to see it animated? Maybe some people haven’t read the original story? Maybe they haven’t finished it? Probably not.
I believe the producers of Uzumaki understood that the only way for a Junji Ito adaptation to have a fraction of the charm that his manga had, is to straight up bring his manga panels to life, which they did spectacularly. Hats off to the animators and everyone involved in the making of this anime, it looks truly incredible
I agree. The composition of the original manga is so important, that attempts to "redraw" them like they try to in previous adaptations fall flat because they don't focus on the details of the shot. While the scenes understandably don't have the raw detail and brushwork that the original has, it is more than made up for through the animations, both the very subtle ones that emulate the density of the manga, and the very noticeable ones that really feels like its bringing to live the motion conveyed by the manga. The sound design on top of this is excellent as well, and I think is probably one of the things that will make this worth watching even though the shots are basically taken directly from the manga. I think that the fact it's in black and white also does a lot of good. The art just isn't the same in color, where the lights and the darks just aren't starkly contrasted enough to create the scenes that Junji wants.
@@hteetyAgreed! Speaking of composition specifically, Ito's manga do an incredible job of stretching out the tension and the horror of the situation -- this snippet really excites me as it seems the team behind this project get why his stories work: the pacing is great and doesn't seem as rushed as other anime adaptations of his work have been.
I started it the other day and dropped it at about chapter 9. It's just a bunch of different stories, that sometimes don't even have a proper end to them. It's ok for what it is, I guess at the time of the release of this Manga it was top notch. Nowadays, I could call it mid.
THIS is the animation style that makes Ito's manga come to life. Everything about it looks slightly off in a way that makes it unsettling as hell. I'm so glad it's made so much progress since that first trailer! Good luck on finishing and thanks!
I LOVE this animation. The fact that it’s in black and white makes it a whole other level. I feel that this captures Junji Ito’s vibe and art the best by far. Top tier.
I recall a lot of people reviewing the last anime were saying how that one B&W segment was the best and that they should try doing that for the rest of the series. I’m glad this one goes the extra mile bad tries to do the lines and shadows as well.
i think im one of the few people who dont like this style, purely because its essentially a moving version of the artwork. Now i understand thats WHY people like it, and it looks cool for sure, but I tend to watch anime versions of my favourite mangas to see it in colour, with high quality, smooth animations, bringing the stories to life. I feel like this doesnt really add anything the books didnt already do well.

@carterjeremy89 Indeed. It's one thing to be faithful to the story, but to painstakingly recreate a style as intricate as Ito's? It's a great decision to do it in black & white. It makes it feel more like an animated manga, which fits this type of horror well because a lot of the scares come from sudden page turns, and it's hard to replicate that on screen. Really looking forward to this version of Ito's classic
This looks AMAZING! I love how the attention to detail and how well they’ve kept Junji Ito’s iconic drawing style, and the decision to keep the animation monochromatic honestly elevates the uncanniness and horror. I really look forward to seeing all of it!
I'll say. The line drawing aspect grounds it, you know what I'm saying. It makes it stark and gives the horror deeper impact because it feels so much like the manga.
Honestly that chapter got to me the most, that's what I find so wonderful about Ito's Horror. It's so versatile, that even if your not bothered by it, you read enough and you'll eventually find something that sends that particular shiver down your spine and makes your stomach turn.

So, I looked into the composer, Colin Stetson. He uses a method called circular breathing when playing woodwind instruments in which someone doesn’t have to pause their playing to take breaths of air. Theoretically, someone using this method of breathing could continuously play, nonstop. Where this gets existential is when you realize that the music itself, is a spiral.
@@Bro-BLZIT I haven't red uzumaki but that would be a very interesting scene that I hope they put in the series, like imagine the son coming to his house only to hear a repeating melody or song sang in a wind instrument over and over until he reaches it's source in his father's room as he sings over and over again surrounded by spirals while he does the weird eye thing
Oh this is PERFECT. The tiny little spirals in the background? The way every frame could be a manga panel? The way they kept the humour to go with the horror? I CANT WAIT!!!
This truly looks like the manga panels have come to life. I love how much detail they have in every frame, and keeping everything in the black and white makes everything look so dramatic.
This is probably the best usage of rotoscoping I’ve seen in an anime, all the benefits without it’s negatives. Bravo to the animation team for making that work out.
Almost all of this is CGI. The slight variation in the line weights and animation looks too perfectly distributed to be rotoscoped. I imagine they used a simple noise modifier for most of the effects. At 0:29 the line overlapping the nose is exactly how a cel shader behaves and looks unintentionally ugly. Also, Kirie's hair at 0:32 appears to be intersecting with itself. One aspect that throws me off is at 0:30 when her eyes adjust to match the perspective which isn't typical with 3d animation. However, I have seen tools that change the shape of the face based on camera angles such as Cam-Shape-Matic.
Junji Ito’s work’s don’t tend to get translated very well into other media, but I have high hopes for this one. The visuals really capture his work, and I like the music and sound design of this clip. Don’t let us down!
I can see why this took so long to make. The animation and style really does look like high-quality manga flipbook. Uzumaki is one of Junji Ito's masterpiece mangas. So it really shows that it deserves to be well animated. I'm really looking forward on the anime adaption.

I'm completely okay with the whole "delay it until it's perfected" thing, but some update would be nice. Anything at all to say "Hey! This isn't canceled!"
You're correct, it is Colin Stetson that's credited for the music! And it's supposed to come out later this year, but I have my doubts since we're halfway through the year and there still is no official release date. It's been delayed a lot in order to give the material the love and attention to detail it deserves, so production will likely go into 2024.
Reading the manga 10 years ago was like a fever dream. I told myself I'd never touch it again because it so haunted me, but this animation style is so perfect I don't think I'll be able to resist watching.

I love this clip so much. It really captures the futility of all of Junji’s stories but Uzumaki especially. The horror just keeps growing and growing and no one wants to leave (except Kiri’s bf) until it’s far too late
Is the horror growing? Or is it winding tighter and tighter? Each installation another loop deeper into the horror. The pressure building like someone wrapping rope around your chest. When this comes out I’m gonna order some escargot for my friends 🐌 very excited

Honestly kind of love the use of rotoscope here, just adds another layer of creepyness to it it with how smooth and organic characters move and especially accentuates their movements when they actually spiral, fantastic

Not just Junji Ito. Anime and horror have very rarely mixed well. Seems to me that this director has been working hard to make it work.
Yeah I've never read his manga but I can imagine exactly what it would look like
Nowadays, I could call it mid.

this *is* the update, this is them telling you its not cancelled and that its still going
@@albedoweatheruno this was 8 months ago man

the music is incredible. sounds like the same guy who did the score for HEREDITARY. 2:22
I mean... it's creepy, yes, and sometimes grotesque, but also goofy and bizarre and comedic and all sorts of other wonderful things - the traces of which are thankfully present even in this clip. But I certainly don't think it's some "so dark and horrific that I can never touch it again" - it's overall a very goofy strange and creepy work.
haha total fever dream. I read it in 3 nights and my goodness.. I'm a fan ever since
@@animalbancho1726Horror hits people differently. I can definitely see how Uzumaki could be in the "never touch again" category for some people even if it wasn't for me. Meanwhile, I can't stomach old creepy Newgrounds animations like Saladfingers
Then you'll haunted for another 10 years 😂
@@jeremoople "I'm here to enquire about your spoons."
I still reference saladfingers and very few people remember. We've lost something important :'-(
You can tell straight away that it was made with love and respect of Junji ito's work, no cutting corners, faithful in art, pacing and tone, trully impressive work and I hope people will recognized that as well!
Just when I thought there would be a really good adaptation of Junji Ito's work... it turned out to be yet another half-hearted project like the others, merely trying to exploit Junji Ito's big name for huge profits.
Blame Adult Swim....they denied the funding and forced the team to release low quality episodes because Adult Swim wouldn't hand over any more funds. So they scrooged the creators.
Ain’t no profits being made here.
Even if it gets delayed over and over again and it takes a few years to reach us... take your time with this because this is looking so special. We need to foster a culture that rewards care and artisanship rather than studio crunch / rush. This is looking phenomenal and is resonating with a lot of longtime fans of Ito. Kudos and bravo, we are excited.
amen brother
It's hard waiting but it's been so many years already. I totally agree with your statement about art, but I just wish Uzumaki wasn't delayed back then
I'm so excited for this to come out. The art looks really good. It just feels right to be in black and white.
2:10 “There’s a spiral in your ear”
This must be the most "manga-anime" adaptation ive seen. and even though its CGI mostly it looks superb. Rotoscopy looks so earie and thats amazing on this kind of masterpiece. waiting anxiously for when it comes out. and i dont really care if it is 2025 as long as this ends to be a concious adaptation to the magnum opus of Junji Ito.
This is incredibly promising. I love the commitment to Ito's art style but what's impressive is the pacing and editing, and the willingness to use all the tools available to create an atmosphere that you can't on the page. Can't wait to see this adaptation!
The hard work and painstaking effort of the team behind the animation deserves praise. Faithfully following the manga art, it is like as if the manga has come to life.

I really hope this gets as popular as it deserves so we get more high quality adaptations of his work
Popular in a good way*
"high quality adaptations " No I do not want the rotten hands of netflix or disney or any hollywood cancer to touch this masterpiece.
@@Dayz3O6Netflix doesn't animate stuff.... What is wrong with you people?
@@Dayz3O6what are you talking about? obviously they mean more stuff like this. and you know netflix has already adapted some of Ito's works right?
Words cannot describe how excited I am for this, it looks incredible! Also 1:28 is a nice little touch of personality that I love to see, I actually had to go check my copy cause it really felt like it belonged there :)
Honestly kind of love the use of rotoscope here, just adds another layer of creepyness to it it with how smooth and organic characters move and especially accentuates their movements when they actually spiral, fantastic
Surely it will come out this year... (coping hard)
