  • Vestibular disease is a disorder that affects a dog's body balance systems; the most common type is the peripheral form, which occurs outside the central nervous system. It is important to know the causes, recognize the symptoms and how to treat this disease.

I've had 2 dogs with this. The first was young and strong and she got over it as fast as it came. The other dog was very old and already needed help getting up, so we lost her at 16 years. We were unable to lift her up. Very sad. The dog of my life.🐕❤

This is the very best explanation of the dozens of videos I have watched. My miniature poodle started these imbalance symptoms at age 2 years 3 months and had 10 incidents over the next 2 years, the first 9 only lasting a few minutes to maybe 10 minutes of imbalance following by up to 15 minutes to a couple hours of resting after each time and all 9 incidents happened when suddenly jumping off a couch to run excitedly to the door to greet a family member coming into the house. But it took the 10th incident which happened while swimming in the water after an hour of play on the beach to get her diagnosed as having central vestibular disease by the Vet College at University of Saskatchewan on August 6, 2021 for me to further research vestibular disease intensively and for me to put together that prior to her first incident in Sept of 2019 that she had had one external ear infection treated by drops inside the ear. Therefore I now believe she does not have the central form which is in the brain but instead she has the peripheral form originating in the ears. I had not known that poodles in particular grow hair inside their ear canal and had not been pulling it out and cleaning her ears regularly up to that time of her ear infection. I am now researching that this problem is now an inner middle ear issue that likely began with that first ear infection over 2 years ago and likely spread to her middle ear and has never been fully resolved and is likely from getting water into her ears during a bath or a swim previous to all 10 attacks. I will keep posted as I intend on asking for up to a 2 month course of antibiotics to clinically treat it as a middle ear inflammation or chronic infection. CT scans and a team at U. of S. was quoted at $3000 to $4000 to definitively diagnose it as a middle ear issue and I am more willing to try the antibiotic without all that expense of a CT scan. How many other dogs out there could be experiencing this imbalance from an ear infection/inflammation? A human with a middle ear infection will experience the same symptoms. For several days before each of the 10 incidents, I noticed she was off her food and would not bend down to eat from her bowl which makes sense if she was feeling dizzy bending down but would eat off my hand held to her mouth. I have been giving her CBD oil for about six months.

On another site on this topic, a guy named John - not the speaker - told people to put Cayenne pepper on the gums. My dog had "old dog" vestibular. Went to the park, dog fine. Left the park, dog could walk straight at all. Pitiful. So within 4 hours I put Cayenne pepper on the gums. Dog was running through the house 8 hours later? Why isn't this promoted more? Thanks for your information - very well said.

Thanks for the great description and commentary! My dog is going through this right now - it came on very suddenly, and it’s been scary for the both of us. My vet diagnosed her with the idiopathic version, as there was no inner ear infection (upon examination), so we are unsure if this is peripheral or central. Hopefully the former!! We both need patience and lots of love during this stressful time, so I’m making sure she gets plenty of that ❤️

    Good advice.
FWIW: DON'T be lulled into a sense of security when your vet says that most dogs recover from vestibular disease / syndrome.
Most dogs do recover but if the underlying cause of the vestibular disase / syndrome is CENTRAL (brain related) the outcome is likely to be sad. Be prepared as this can unfold very quickly - four days in the case of our beloved 13yo wirehaired dachshund Archibald. One minute you are waiting out this very distressing / debilitating illness with few treatments beyond offering comfort and hoping for a recovery and suddenly you realise that there's no turning back. Heartbreaking.
ALSO - when caring for your dog during this period be sure that they do NOT aspirate (inhale) food as this may harm them more than the vestibular disease. Goodluck everyone - love them while you have them and do everything you can to give your dog time to recover. Let's hope that vet science can develop a treatment for this common condition.

Super helpful video Dr. Becker. My 12 year old Italian Greyhound is experiencing this now, first time, as of this morning. He can’t walk or eat without falling to the left, the direction his head keeps tilting. Having an MRI done tomorrow morning. Hoping and praying for the best. Thank you again for your video.

To stop fits of vestibular put Cayenne Pepper powder on the dogs gum. Before you count to 3 the fit will be over. Its causes vasodilation. A pinch in food daily is a good prevention. No side effects. Cheap. After a few months preventative dosing daily you can space it out and see if it goes without Cayenne Pepper. Its sounds too easy, try it and see for yourself

Thanks for this detailed video! My Vet said my dogs balance should return in about 4 days. She's an 11 year old female Boxer named "Ginger." But now I'm watching other videos where it says it could take 1 to 3 weeks. I noticed you said about 2 weeks. My dog did vomit a couple of times at first and we thought it was a stroke. So when I took her to the Vet and she diagnosed it as Vestibular disease, she gave her an anti-nausea shot and sent me home with 4 days worth of anti-nausea pills. But I'm surprised she didn't do any bloodwork or examine her ears. Because, like you said, in order for the disease to resolve, the underlying cause has to be dealt with. We're on day 3 since this suddenly came on but she seems to already be improving. We noticed she didn't want to eat but still wanted to drink (even excessively). But now her appetite seems to be returning. She also had diarrhea early this morning so I gave her some Pepto Bismol tablets wrapped in lunch meat and then cooked up some rice, which she ate right up.

Give the dog Cayenne Pepper and the attack of vestibular sill cease within 5 seconds. This works by opening blood vessels as there is a response to the Cayenne Pepper. I used it to cure my dog 2 years ago having attacks each day. The vet was completed useless as was the medication they gave. Just have a jar of Cayenne Pepper on hand. If the dog has an attack lick and dip your finger in it and put on their gum. Use about half a matchstick head amount in their food each day. Works a treat. Sounds unlikely but it works instantly and completely and it costs so little

I've been giving my 11yo 70lb Staffie 50mg twice per day (100mg/day total) for about a month now.
He had gone from having very good hearing to almost completely deaf over the course of just a couple of weeks...he has always been a little on the fearful side and I have no idea why but it was greatly compounded when he lost his hearing...the CBD oil has helped a lot with his fear but still wont venture far from our deck when it's dark out which I believe is due to coyotes in our immediate area.
The CBD oil I use for him has medium chain triglycerides which are suppose to help with absorption.

My 3 year old golden retriever had a sudden vestibular attack the day after taking Apoqil for paw licking. The vet suggested stopping Apoqil and to take our dog to an inner ear specialist. I was pissed off for the lack of responsibility and shoving my dog immediately towards another vet. This is day 4, and there is little improvement so far. The inner ear specialist can’t see our dog for 6 weeks.

Do you have a video or any information on
interstitial lung disease? I took my dog to the vet today because yesterday she started rapidly breathing she's not eating she's drinking a little bit of water if I bring it over to her the veterinary said she's too hydrated a little bit and then she has interstitial lung disease but he cannot pinpoint the problem she had an x-ray and blood work done I don't understand why I just paid $400 to have an x-ray blood work yet they can't figure out what is causing the problem I was given two types of medication one is called Clavamox and the other is called Prednisone. The internet everything you click on says something different and I just read that there's no cure for this eventually your dog is going to die the only symptom she has right now is the rapid breathing but it's a very light rapid breathing it's not heavy she's not coughing she did have a fever which she doesn't have any more so she has the rapid breathing and the fact that she's not eating she's not active but how can you take a dog to a vet and they have an x-ray in front of them but they can't tell what she has, they said they're not sure that she has this lung disease it could be that she has this they would have to send me to another doctor that would cost me about three or four thousand to do so they said let's treat it as pneumonia and hope that it clears up if it doesn't then you'll have to go the second route and that's going to be expensive do you have any suggestions or any information on this she also has a very light wheezing noise and does not have a heart murmur

My 7 year old Akita Tank who is 140 lbs, has hypothyroidism and had been on antibiotics for almost a whole month, had an episode on Sat. he woke up very shaky and out of the blue had like a seizure.... he all of a sudden seem to lose ability to walk (hind legs).....I rushed him to the vet and they did extensive blood tests (all normal) and he could hobble along a bit...but with difficulty ....by the time we left the vet he could no longer walk at all. They had given me a pain killer for him which he had a horrible reaction to. He had many of the symptoms mentioned here Sunday he was calmer but still could not walk at all, not hind legs or front legs......nor could he seem to focus or recognize us he acted like he could not see or focus on food or water. It was very much like vertigo. Monday he was very weak...BUT standing, and went outside with assistance.... He still seemed to have a slight issue with coordination when eating/drinking....like he does not know how, so hand feeding him slowly. Today (Thurs) he is almost completely normal. ....2.5 years ago he got salmonella from Fresh Pet food....(I almost lost my other dog who had been on 5 weeks of antibiotics) Both have had constant reoccurring diarrhea since then. So my questions are 1. could the antibiotic have cause this ? The antibiotic was Meytonidazole 500mg 3-2X a day. the thyroid medication is Levothyroxine 0.6 mg 1.5 -2X a day and the pain med that he had such a bad reaction to was Carprofen 4 once a day ....I did not give this to him again after that 1st night. 2. Is there a more natural antibiotic that I can look into or ask about or even make to help him if he gets it again?? I would be so afraid to put him on any antibiotic now. 3. Is there a method of controlling reoccurring diarrhea ??
