  • If you can disregard the mispronunciations, and all the absent French accent marks, then you might not be annoyed by this enthusiastic shout of readerly love for His Excellency, Emile Zola!

de Maupassant died a terrible death of syphilis in early middle age; he was quite demented from what I understand--I always want to start cussing about how great these guys were--yeah, brilliant, you come away with little bits of nineteenth century Paris on your clothes, lint from then and there stuck to your shirt!

Now, this is something I came against just recently. I was reading a tome of essays by Ezra Pound, a brash and rash and exceedingly brilliant lover of poetry, music, as well as poetry; for all poetry was music to him or it was not poetry at all, a complete f-ing madman, Ezra Pound, as all the great ones are. If you have not read his notebooks of Provencal, I mean the things he tried to transpose from Piedmontese/Italian/French, fricken beautiful dude. But he turned his eye on prose too, and he would not even touch the 'Roosians', as he called them; because he thought all that had been encapsulated under the umbrella of nineteenth-century French prose, notably, or course, Flaubert, who devoted every minute of life to writing, having no social life save that he allowed to George Sand, but I tell you Tolstoy is something else , a demon. Look at Tolstoy's manuscripts, you see Dostoevsky was a saint by comparison. Tolstoy was a fucking criminal! He was richer than the fucking Czar, did you realize that? He was struggling against the most oppressive temptations to exercise his "rights" at all times. He freed all his serfs! Nobody else in Russia was doing that before him; he was the most famous person in Russia. Tolstoy was the epitome of the saint pressing up against spirituality, damming up, flowin over...

@@Scottmbradfield 😆 I have always thought that wanker was a much more apposite word than jerk or jerk off. Pretentious jerk off doesn't cut it for me! I 😆

please give me my head, do not feel any obligation to respond, i just love your channel, I want to recommend the book Bubu of Montparnass by Charles-Louis Philippe, who was a blue-collar son who rose into the highest lit. society in Paris but he was true to his roots; he wrote about the poor, and Bubu is one of the very few books that T. S. Eliot wrote a foreword for. It's pretty devastating. It's about a prostitute and a pimp and the effects of syphilis.... What I envy you for are all the sci-fi works and well, I don't want to leave anything out, your magnanimity! I am a pauper by comparison ....
