I think an underrated aspect of this game is how awesome and efficient the menu is. It's so simple, yet it's pretty packed with exactly what you need. I always liked the menu and options on the game.
Too much work and content; publishers, in this case WB Games, want the least amount of work possible and biggest amount of profit possible. That's why you don't see good and actual content like a Konquest mode, but a lot of ugly skins being sold for US$ 10.00 (Mortal Kombat 1)

I love using Multalities! Multalities are fucking awesome! I remember one. Here's the sequence for Scorpion's "Raise Hell" Multality. It's Down, Down, Down, Up, Triangle/Y.
Jax actually has a fairly playable model. With a cheat engine you can play as him and he's functional (but since he's not playable, he doesn't have fatalities, so glitches probably happen during the gameplay). Also with a cheat engine, since Kitana is fully playable on versus mode, you can actually beat the game as her. I believe Jade's model is probably somewhat playable too but Sonya is a no-no. She's not supposed to be played. But yeah, I think if they had more time and the PS2 had better hardware, maybe they would have added much more characters to the game.
The only thing I don't really like about this game is when you play as sub zero or scorpion and they are still Liu Kang in cutscenes. I mean did they run out of time to make unique dialogues, or were they just too lazy?
It would have taken sooooo much work to make new dialogue, new cutscenes and everything for two new characters... not to mention it's the same story anyway. I think they just didn't have the time/resources to expand on it but wanted to give players a cool little bonus.
This game doesn't work without the two *SHAOLIN MONKS*. Sub-Zero and Scorpion are doing other stuff while Liu Kang and Kung Lao are grinding. They would create many plot holes if they tried to make them part of the original story.
M Hale in the original timeline he was chosen and not liu kang but he refused because the great kung lao died while fighting goro so lie kang fought but they got rid of the idea

If you never played this game in versus you can play as a couple more characters
