  • Watch how to replace a broken or leaking Watts 800M4 (800 M4 by Watts) backflow preventer.
I am replacing with 'FREEZE' resistant version of the retrofit kit for this Watts 800M4 backflow preventer. I hope the freeze resistant really works! :-)
If you want to buy this same retrofit kit for Watts 800M4 1/2 or 3/4 inch kit, please use my link below:

Instead of removing the two screws that hold the cover on and then using pliers to remove the black plastic piece, leave the cover on and just use your hand to loosen the assembly. Seen several videos where the first thing folks do is remove the cover but the cover is a useful handgrip to loosen the assembly.

Very useful. Thanks especially for showing how you coped with an unplanned event, the stuck cap. So many DIY treatments, including a certain long-running TV show about old houses, fail to acknowledge that sometimes we have to deal with the unexpected.

I have the same back flow preventer and it leaks very little occasionally when it gets cold, but the problem is that it basically turns off and on to the sprinkler system. You can hear a thumping or pounding inside the valve and it continuously goes off and on. Hopefully the repair kit will take care of that issue as well. But this video looks very helpful and I'll use the link to buy a repair kit. Thanks!

He should also be using some silicone grease on that O-ring. And that "thing" is the stopper that prevents the water from flowing back into the water supply. That's the whole purpose of the "Backflow Peventer". Overall it's a useful video. It's good to see the pieces but clearly not the most knowledgeable DIY guy.

That was the hard and risky way to remove that cap. IMHO Once the cap broke a hammer and screwdriver would have been better tools for that job,. There was clearly a big enough piece of that post left to get a good hit in. If that piece broke off too then you might have to go to the dremel, but you risk getting pieces lost in the pipe and potentially jamming the valve.
