We members of the Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship (SOF) have just learned that our friend Tom Regnier fell victim to COVID 19 yesterday. This is a great tragedy for his family and friends, and for scholarship (in the best sense of the word). Fortunately, we have videos such as this one to remember him by. RIP
One of my favorite speakers, I’m so sad to read this one year later. Probably his law background but also engaging as a person, his lectures have been interesting, funny and well ordered. A huge loss.
I don’t have a dog in the fight; which is to say I don’t know, and don’t especially care, who wrote Shakespeare. If Edward de Vere wrote it, I would expect to see, despite those remarkable mirror incidents to events in his his life in the plays, some evidence from his presumably busy daily doings at court that he was actually moonlighted as a playwright. Similarly with the Stratford man who seems to have had several preoccupations only one of which, acting, had anything to do with literature. I don’t quite buy it, though, that he was an uneducated illiterate. I score the game at half-time 0 to 0.
what do you say about alexander waughs unpicking of the sonnets dedication page cipher? i was particularly impressed with the second paragraph being an anagram of 'nothing truer than truth' in latin. de veres family motto. thats never going to happen by chance, esp as theres so many other messages contained within the words. a knockout blow to the stratford theory i would say. which is holding on by the skin of its teeth at this point.
