  • This is a classic timba bassline recorded on the 1998 Issac Delgado album La Primera Noche. I transcribed and learned every single note of this bassline- it took days.
I used the Moises app to isolate the bass track, and at times had to slow the tune down to 40bpm to catch the line. When it came to recording, I used the Moises desktop app to strip the bassline out, plugged in and then I was playing with the band! And it wasnt just any band, IMO the Issac Delgado band of 1997-98 has been the best Cuba has ever seen. And of course, Alain Perez is now the greatest living Cuban bassist - ever.
There is a lot to learn from in this bassline. The key changes are really hip, and the line is propelled by a ton of ghost notes, which tie the bass in to congas and particularly the kick drum. Note choice is pretty simple, playing the root note, but the harmony is so complex it never gets boring. There are some really tasty fills, which took forever to learn. Alain often starts these on the third above the chord and runs the fill over the bar and lands on a fifth or octave below. You have to learn to count to 5 and then hit the ponche!
I am using my new Yamaha TRBX 605 bass running through an Ampeg Classic stomp box to sweeten the tone. I am really pleased with this bass, as it has a two octave scale, which means a super long and super fat B string, which is the heart and soul of timba. I'd recommend these basses to anyone who plays timba or salsa progresiva. They are very comfortable to play, well shaped and super light.
Sorry, cant provide a transcription as I memorized every note. There are so many ghost notes it would be too much to write down. Phew!
