    Put the cases in the oven at just over 100 deg C until fully heated & let the bearings fall out naturally. On reinstalling the bearings, heat the cases again & put the bearings in the freezer to cool them & they just drop in.

    Steel has around half the coefficient of expansion of aluminum. I've taken lots of bearings out by putting the piece in my barbecue and heating it up. 170° has always worked to get the bearing to just pop out.
    I don't have a press like you to put the new ones in but I leave the bearings in my freezer for an hour or so then tap them in to a warmed up case gently and they go in quite easily. Give it a try next time. Nice video by the way, nice to see the bike come together. I've enjoyed watching and learning from your mods.

    Hi Paul- If you ever run out of your favorite epoxy, I have found run of the mill JB Weld to work very well in engines. But there is a trick- use a propane torch to lightly heat the metal to “sweat” out any oils first. Then when the metal is still a bit warm, apply the JB. The heat will make the JB flow slightly and become very smooth. I have used JB in intake ports to reshape them, a very tough environment, and it has held fine. Whereas others like Devcon have peeled loose. FWIW. As always, great show.

    Heat is great for removing bearings from case. Another trick that works well is if you weld a small bit on the bearing race it will shrink a lot from all the carbon and fall out.

    I use a toaster oven for smaller parts that need to be heated in a controlled way like the case, it is easier on the part than an oxy/acetylene rig. Most toaster ovens have a heat control that allows you to set the temperature, if you buy a new one (about $20 @ walmart) you can find one that lists the temperature to which it heats on the dial. It is good for heating bearings and other small items, so you aren't likely stink up the oven in the kitchen. You can also heat bearings in the microwave if you are careful to wrap the metal completely with a completely wet paper towel so that NO metal is visible. Do 30 seconds at a time to judge how well the bearing is being heated, then extrapolate from that how much time you need. The water in the paper towel prevents the electron gun from sparking on the metal.

    • @paulbrodie
      @paulbrodie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your tips. I do not own a microwave, and cannot find my toaster oven. Could be time to buy another, seeing as they are inexpensive.

    The bearing going into the case with surprising ease, reminds me of nearly everything I do whilst trying to follow 'the instructions'. Re oil seal in Primary Chaincase a mod in later BSA (same type of engine) Competion Department disregarded this seal and drilled crankcase wall at a level to just allow chain lubrication and used the scavenge on sump to keep level , a benefit was to allow extra volume in Chaincase to help with Engine Breathing to keep oil tight

    • @paulbrodie
      @paulbrodie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aha! The Competition Department got involved.. So they had hole for the oil level, but how would more oil get into the primary chain case on its' own?

    • @whalesong999
      @whalesong999 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paulbrodie I'd guess the chuffing of a one cylinder crankcase would blow enough oil mist around to keep the primary case wet enough. I still wonder with some amazement at the period of British road racing marques that had open primary chains with no case to keep them lubricated.

      John, thanks for liking our videos. On the Cub engine casings, first I used a file to get all the marks out. Then, emery cloth, finer and finer. 80 grit / 120 / 180 / 240 / 320 / 400. Now comes the Scotchbrite, coarse to fine. It's a lot of work by hand, but better than a buffing wheel, which can be un-even, and doesn't get into all the corners... Good Luck!

Not to be confused with a fire starting product with a similar name. It's for aluminum repairs, you mix it with water apply it, let it dry, bake at 160f and you would swear it was welded. Sand or polish with a wire wheel and it looks and acts like metal. McMaster Carr carries it, there is also a version for steel. The stuff is tenacious! Keep up the great work, regards to Mitch

    Mr. Brodie, I was just wondering why you decided to use the Epoxy instead of welding the cases? Are they not made of the same aluminum as the cylinder? Not that there is anything wrong with using epoxy I was just wondering. Great video as expected and nice clean engine building, people take note!

    • @humourless682
      @humourless682 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These cases are very easy to repair with welding, but oil will be impregnated into the casting, so prep work must be carried out properly.
      Epoxy repairs on this type of casting, often fail due to the strong vibrations a crankcase is subject to.

      @@humourless682 Depends on the kind and quality of the epoxy. I had a Honda 160 with the case cracked from a chain derailment which I repaired with a common epoxy and it lasted for decades until I sold the bike. (Now wish I had it back...).

      @@whalesong999 On some broken castings, an epoxy repair will work perfectly.
      On something like a Tiger Cub crankcase, which is subject to a good deal of vibration, failure of an epoxy repair is very likely.
      If the damaged part is something like an outer cover, no real issue if an epoxy repair fails.
      On a crankcase, though, failure will mean, removing the motor and stripping it completely to do the job properly.
      In this case, an epoxy repair, has saved maybe an hour over welding the case properly.

    • @whalesong999
      @whalesong999 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@humourless682 Vibration at that spot on the case is not an issue to my senses. I did wonder too why he chose to not weld but he has good instincts and he'll be living with the choice. I've sure had good luck with JB Weld for similar things (I had no access or need to attempt welding). We'll likely never hear another thing about it. In terms of time, I doubt that was even on his mind, he was just enjoying the epoxying more, especially after doing the seat pan fiberglass.
      Edit: There is some question about the heat generated by TIG welding there. It's a fairly thin spot in the case and warpage is a concern, leading to stress in the part that is more prone to fail than the epoxy might be.
