Thanks a million Tom for diverting me to this video .unbelievable the wealth back then .plus the poor folk who made them rich by drinking their product.two different worlds indeed.love seeing stuff like this . To bad my father wasn’t alive to tell him all this stuff cause he would love it also .cheers friend
Yes Rob. There were a realtively small number of well off big big landowners who probably all knew each other. Many of them lived most of the year in London etc and used their houses here as second homes. Many of our Belfast parks are now on their former estates. Many of their big houses were allowed to go to wreck and ruin and were demolished. A sad unnecessary loss. We still have all the wonderful big Belfast parks though.
Great to see. My grandfather was the head gamekeeper Tommy Thompson. I saw a picture of him on one of the information boards with Patou the German Shepard He had plenty of stories as did my father of the Dunvilles and of the estate and the employees
Hey many thanks for this brilliant personal connection information Tommy! I love the old connected stories of places like this. unfortuantely I cannot get people to sit and be interviewed on film. they think they would be no good when they would be great! This means that so many old stories worth haring are lost forever! Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.
Interesteing video, Tom Nice views across the city from red burn I've only been once but I haven't took this route you took. always find north down i s the place too be for history old ruins etc us history types likes are selves lol 👊
Yes I would usually have walked the scenic views top path Jeremy. It isn't surprising that N Down and Belfast have so much history though. This was rich agricultural land and forest before that but it had good access to the sea. There would have been few roads back then so everyone used the sea as a means of transport from a to b.
This week when temperatures plummeted to below -5°, there were people left sleeping in tents in across the country. 60 people died in Homelessness in Dublin last year. How can we push to fix this if there is a partial shut down of the Dáil. #KeepOpenTheDáil
We have a massive upsurge of suicides round Belfast and deaths due to people not being diagnosed with heart complaints and cancer and many others having urgent life saving operations being postponed! Many of these people will die as a result. We have the homeless too! But it appears all our Assembly is interested in is covid.
Hello Tom , thats a lovely walk beautiful old trees I also noticed the trees that looked a lot like the Dark Hedges , great shame they did not preserve the old house , like you said so many were just let go . Thanks Tom.
Yes quite uphill in places but a lot of local history and good wildlife viewing opportunities. Indeed Shaun they had no foresight. Many of these big houses were second houses and even third houses for rich English landlords who spent most time in London. When the money got tight they were simply let go with the land sale. Too much money to fix them up.
I found this bear pit by accident when taking the dog for a walk...so many interesting and unusual places right under our noses waiting to be discovered
Yes indeed iDavid. So many stories forgotten and buried along with the folks involved. I reckon there must be lots of homes/esttes around the city that are built on top of ancient graveyards.
@@TomMcClean I vaguely remember it. I think there were horses in a field in front of it maybe? My sister used to tell me ghost stories about the house.
Ooh no, I don't remember the house if it was demolished in 1972 as I was born in 76. What am I thinking of? It was definitely a big house on the Old Holywood Rd. Hmmm
Right, I was thinking of Glenmachan House. Not to be confused with Glenmachan Tower House which is still there. I wonder if it's in one of Aidan Campbell's books.
That’s a nicely wooded area and looks like a great place to get out and go for a bit of a hike, which I’m glad to see you doing. I find myself more than a bit angry at this moment. The events of yesterday in Washington DC... I’m processing them. I just hope our government finds a way to bring a president to justice to ensure this type of abuse of power will never happen again in our country.
I'm sorry to see all this Greg. People got killed right at the seat of government and that is a disaster for all the families. America is not in a good place. We are under 'house arrest' again. Not allowed to travel more than 10 miles from home or meet up with more than one friend outside family bubble for next 6 weeks! We are back where we were last March. Groundhog Day. Both our 'world' have gone mad.
@@TomMcClean Sorry you are in such a severe lockdown. I hope things improve over there both with the virus and your government getting it's head out of its ass. I've been watching a lot of news lately and keeping an eye on the situation over here. I have also been keeping an eye on social media. It's such a sad state of affairs. People are actually brainwashed. truly brainwashed by the President and "conservative" (radical) media. They have been listening to a sick man insist he was cheated out of an election when the absolute clear and certain reality is that the election was fair. The group that was at the capitol was representative of people in our society. I find it hard to accept but many people think this is ok. There were people there who actually intended to lynch VP Mike Pence as he dared to certify the electoral votes. These were the representative votes of every person who voted, not just the votes of the victor, but the votes of the loser as well. And yes, it meant Trump lost, but that should have been accepted on November 4th. Trump's brigade is thoroughly anti-democratic. Their loyalty is not to our country but to their leader. They brought zip ties to bind the limbs of our representatives and senators so that they could presumably hold them hostage to teach them a lesson. They planted pipe bombs. Just today a truck was found full of them in the capitol area. The reason this all didn't go as planned, despite an abysmal and embarrassing response on the part of our capitol's police, is because the group generally consisted of a bunch of morons. But those who inspired these idiots, those criminals will most likely not be brought to justice. Senators, lawyers, and representatives who played along with Trump's false reality, and still do. Any sane person knows he lost fair and square. He knows he lost. His backers in congress know he lost, yet they lied, and lied, and lied until they and legions of others believed it. It's just so insane. I honestly can't believe these things have happened here. HERE. The cradle of democracy. It's a lot for me to take in, Tom. That this place and the people I thought I knew, my countrymen, well, I guess I didn't know them very well at all. I hope that things get better, but there are so many people who think Trump is ok. Still. I hope you now see, there is nothing ok about Donald Trump. Not a thing. He may or may not be impeached, I don't know. I know he has effectively been neutered by his cabinet and those around him. They will not follow a single order. He is a lost man, but still dangerous. Anyone who thinks he can't incite another riot just because they took away his Twitter account is sorely mistaken. And next time, I fear it won't be a show of goofballs and idiots, I fear it will be real violence.
I'm afraid the world has gone mad Greg. You can't believe what you are seeing over there and I can't believe what I am seeing over here as regards total compliance to trying to kill a virus by killing our economy and pushing non virus patients to the side as being unimportant! ps I nearly wasn't able to answer you here. I only found your post by chance. It had been put in the, 'held for review' aection in my comments. I don't understand why!!!!!!!!!
I often post on to our Daily Mail comments online comments section. They are never nasty or have bad language etc but I reckon that because they don't promote the UK Government line they never make it up or they are quickly removed if they do get put up. Democracy and free speech are a thing of the past Greg. A lot of people are now having their TH-cam channels removed too. Oh dear. I would hate to lose my channel but if it ever disappears well you will know I said something 'wrong'. It is getting this bad here.
lol I have a few You Tube American and Canadian 'friends' who have put up videos with bears and cougar coming into their back yards! Of course their backyards have almost limitless forest behind them! lol
loved your video thank you very much for showing
Many thanks Jeanette for all your wonderful comments. I didn't know any of this before so that made it real fun for me too.
