Jacques Brel is not singing. He gives all his body and soul to his audience. He was more than an artist, he was a true passionate man for whom his art was everything. He was not french by the way, he was belgian, the best gift Belgium ever gave to mankind in my opinion. He was inspiring, and unmatched to this day. I owe him so much.

This is more than singing. It's way beyond singing. It's actual performing with one's guts, blood, sweat and tears all out, on the table. Giving everything like there was no tomorrow, like there was nothing left to live. Jacques Brel, the naked king.

I spent so many evenings during my actor's studies in Belgium seing all live performance on DVD. I'm so glad his songs comes to you..Hold it Dereck, you will become a fine and deep expert of French and Belgium culture. Jacques Brel wrote a part of our patrimony... Thanks to remember me that.

I remember... I was a child, maybe 5 or 6 yrs old. Late 1970s. (yeah, I'm THAT old, lol!)
My dad was watching tv and I was playing not too far away. This song, this very performance came on the television. My dad called me over and I sat on his lap. "You have to watch this. This is one of the greatest perforance of one of the greatest songs ever", he told me. As I watched, I was kinda scared. This man was so intense, crying even. I didn't get it at that time.
Years later, as I listen and watch it again, it brings tears to my eyes. Because of the song and Jacques Brel himself, but mostly because I realize that I had a dad that recognized amazing artists and wanted to share them with me.
This performance will always be a gigantic classic.

He was trained in drama at first, hence his scenic presence and indeed, what a storyteller. Played in few films and a musical too. this song is top five of greatest songs in French language… along with his “Ne me quitte Pas” (which you should definitely look at), Edith Piaf, Leo Ferré and George Brassens.

Brel was an outstanding live performer, and was exhausted at the end of every show. He stopped live performances very early in his career.
    Very poetic lyrics.
Fun fact: there is NO studio version of this song! Just like Marley's "No woman no cry", you only can find live versions...

Tu abordes un dieu de la chanson française. J'ai 47 ans et je l'écoutais à 15 ans bien aprés sa mort

For a change of mood, I recommend “Les bonbons” and “Les bourgeois” which are on Brel’s humorous side.

    La chanson des vieux amants
    La valse à mille temps
    .....

    Masterpiece.
As a French i am very proud to see this type of content, and about you who understand the power of this song and Brel:)
Nice react and hope you can someday react about "J'ai encore rêvé d'elle" performed by "Il était une fois"; it's one of the best duo song ever, you clearly gonna be shocked of the voices and the lyrics too, so sad and beautiful in the same time;)

Quand on connaît la vitalité de la chanson belge, je ne peux m'empêcher de penser qu'il y est pour quelque chose. Moi qui adore Lara Fabian je vois en Jacques Brel un précurseur

An incredible singer, a true passionate poet. He denounced the bourgeois and talked about life, death. They mocked people's defects. A very big artist. Thé last song, "les Marquises"

You should also react to 'Ces gens là' (Those people) by Jacques Brel. In that song, he describes a family with a music which speed follows his Heart beating. A unique song to discover.
