    I love videos like this but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not open multiple store credit cards!! That’s such a scam and it’s an easy way to make your credit score drop. You have a young and impressionable audience.

    • @GretchenGeraghty7
      @GretchenGeraghty7  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I agree with you! I'm not saying you should have a bunch like I do, I even admitted it can be overwhelming to keep up with them all. However, if you shop at a specific store a lot it can be beneficial to have the store credit card if you spend responsibly!

    Not hate towards Gretchen, but its generally not a good idea to finance a car. When you're young and its your first car sometimes you have to but after that its generally a sign that you're living beyond your means. If you do have to finance your car, after you're done paying it off, continue to set aside what your car payment would be and then by the time you need a new car you can pay for it in full!

    • @samd8518
      @samd8518 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Financing a car when you young does not always mean you're living beyond your means. A lot of young people can afford it and easily drop a large downpayment and increase their initial payments to get the interest out of the way. All while having the car payed off in 3-5 years (which is nothing if you worked hard and easily have the money)

    • @annajacob9750

    This is such dangerous advice to be giving....if you need to borrow money to pay off borrowed money, you should not own a credit card.

      @GretchenGeraghty7  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I agree that when you have a credit card you should be spending responsibly, however I think it's great to have the option to consolidate your debt if it's gotten overwhelming!

    • @Jaidancer1
      @Jaidancer1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Then how else would you expect someone starting out to build their credit, huh? Most places do not let you pay a credit card with a credit card. However, everyone is not fortunate enough to not live off credit cards. So let people take advice the way they want to.

  • @vicki-qq6gu

    you should download google photos or put pics on a drive just to be safe and backup in case of anything!! still probably worth the payment but can't hurt to have a backup in case. and you can listen to hits on spotify and get rid of series radio payment if you want. Just suggestions you obvs don't have to do any of that !

  • @juliaw107
    @juliaw107 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Don’t fall for the trap of store credit cards! Most of the time the APR rates are so high and they’re really not worth it after the first purchase. Sure, you get a percentage off for a first purchase that’s why it’s so enticing. But don’t start racking up those credit cards. Don’t open them. It can be hard to close them.. even get them off your credit report. I recommend not opening them. Don’t fall for it. If you have to maybe open up one credit card with a lower APR rate to grow your credit score, but be responsible with it. Don’t open up a bunch. It’s not worth it. You’re not really saving money. You’re still spending money (;

    All these people mad that you spend $700 a month for an x3...probably dont understand how much it cost. Especially since you financed over 3yrs vs 5, and most likely had a higher interest rate/little credit history. $700 is rather normal for a car that cost roughly 50k. Financing is great for your credit, especially once it’s paid off. Bimmers are a luxury car. This normal lol

    Aldi is also a great option for those that don't have a Trader Joe's and it may even be a little cheaper! Also, I know I don't make near as much, I can barely spend an extra $100/month on "fun" things without being broke lmao, but don't compare your spending habits to others! She has a financial advisor which is great, but the average person won't be able to afford that. Even if you can only save $20 a month, DO IT! It helps sooo much and since I started small I can now average almost $100/month savings!

    It’s interesting to see how much other people spend for sure - I understand it’s personal, but I think it would be very helpful to hear what percentage of your income goes to spending like this, rent/utilities, and savings. That kind of look at finances would also be applicable to people making more/less money bc with the percentages they could better apply it to their own finances!

      Credit cards are good only if you are someone who pays the bill in full and on time every single month. This way you are not paying any interest on the card and are able to take advantage of rewards that the card offers. For example, I have an amazon prime visa card that earns rewards points on every purchase. My card always gets paid on time and in full every month. By charging instead of using my credit union debit card I am able to use the rewards points for things I want that I wouldn't necessarily be able to afford if I didn't have those points to use.

    That's just a realistic BMW car payment--especially over just 4 years. it is a learning lesson but you obviously you can afford it if you've been making your payments on time. It would be a different story if you couldn't make that payment every month ;) so don't be too hard on yourself. I am surprised that your bmw x-series is giving you problems--a family member of mine has had one for 4 years and no issues. If you want, you could sell your car before you pay it off (its definitely worth over the $2400 you owe) and use that money towards something with less frequent and costly maintenance. Or avoid getting maintenance done at bmw--it's a little different but i get my lexus serviced at toyota for a fraction of the cost.

    I found it so interesting that you don't keep yourself on a preplanned budget! I do and I guess I just assumed everyone else does too lol. I really recommend doing that! you can look at your average income (which i guess will be different with your work but still) and take out hard-line bills like rent and your car payment (ouch lol) and then take out your savings goals so like a roth IRA and long term savings and short term savings and a brokerage account and then break down the rest to budget for groceries, eating out, puppy things etc. that way you arent surprised by what it ads up to!
    also i am so sorry about your car payment situation. that is honestly so sad. you were young and so many young people are taken advantage of in situations like that with a crazy car payment or insane APR on a credit card. but now you know for next time! I know you said you wish you'd put more down, but I would really not recommend financing a car ever. cars depreciate like nothing else. the minute you drive of the lot your car is worth less than you paid. so you will never make anywhere close to even on it if you were to try and sell it, so adding on the interest your paying with it financed is just more money you are wasting.
    As far as building credit, getting an entry-level credit card with NO FEES with a LOW limit and using 10% or less of the limit and paying it off in full is a good recommendation.
    I hope you get it paid off soon and i really appreciate you sharing that. I know it's so hard to be open about money things bc the critiques can be brutal, but you are helping a lot of people that watch your videos by talking about mistakes you've made so thank you!!

    My jaw dropped when you said ur car payment! Mine is $250 for a lease and it’s about to end in August. I’m trying to get something cheaper.

    • @savannahbrandt44
      @savannahbrandt44 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @coco marineblu actually not really. At lease for me it’s cheaper and I get a new car every 4 years. It’s only stupid if you don’t put enough money down and have bad credit. It’s definitely not something I’d do being 18 or 19 otherwise your rates are gonna be higher. Getting a loan at lease when I look into it ends up being like $500 for a new car. Which seems pretty stupid to me.

    • @droid2D2C3P0
      @droid2D2C3P0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@savannahbrandt44 leases are the most expensive way to drive a car, yes you get a new car every 4 years but you never really own any of them and you're just perpetually in car payments. That's why financially they're not recommended

    • @savannahbrandt44
      @savannahbrandt44 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@droid2D2C3P0 it also depends on what your payments are and when you get a car. Financially for me when I do the math I would end up loaning a car for 6 years have it finally paid off. By that time you’d end up needing a new car if it’s older. So you finally end up having a car paid off and then have to get a new one. For me it’s way cheaper to lease. Unless you put $10,000 down on a car your payments will still be obviously less. Other wise you have a car for years that beaten down and have to worry about selling that as well. When you lease reoccurring work is paid for most times.
