As a native Indonesian I make a lot of mistakes when I try duolingo, because I speak differently. When the question is: I eat an apple, I answered: saya makan apel. And I was wrong. It should be saya makan sebuah apel. I forgot to add "sebuah" because I almost never use sebuah in a sentence. I usually just say, saya makan apel. That's it

Final "k" is not silent, it's "unreleased". Most Asian languages in this area have unreleased final stop consonants. They can be hard to hear and even harder to tell apart.

If you add suffix -an in the end of the repeat words, it becomes mock up version of the words. For example jeruk-jerukan means fake orange. Mobil-mobilan means toy car. Pacar means boyfriend or girlfriend, pacar-pacaran means pretend to be in relationship

Halo! Saya dilihat videomu di r/indonesian. Lucu ya. Saya akan menonton video lain-lainnya.
Hello, I saw your video on r/indonesian - it's pretty funny! I'll watch your other videos :) I like your mnemonics, bit weird but if they work...
'kecap' is the origin of the word ketchup, it's been on a bit of a funny language journey. And yes, there are a few interesting variants of 'selamat' that are pretty easy to remember because of the other word attached. 'Selamat tinggal' specifically is said to the person remaining behind after you're leaving, using the 'stay' meaning of 'tinggal'. The other way around is 'selamat jalan', literally 'happy travels'.
A lot of the words you think are similar to European languages are probably from Dutch. Indonesia was a Dutch colony for a while, so they picked up a lot of loanwords.
