Scott Manley I'd be surprised. Judging by Xenonauts, you seem to be pretty good at picking up the gist of strategy games, and the gist of Crusader Kings II is pretty simple as far as gists go. The cool stuff like making huge empires and whatnot can get tricky, especially if you keep getting excommunicated and the Holy Roman Empire declares war on you for it (speaking from experience here), but for the most part it's just extrapolating the basic principles up. Then again, I'm no master either, so maybe my perception isn't the best to go by. The point is, I'm pretty sure you're better than you're saying you are.
Scott Manley Why not use a plasma engine and place a capsule with contingency supplies in Eve orbit before attempting the landing? That way, if anything goes wrong, the Kerbs have enough life support to survive until a rescue mission gets there.
My recommendation for the future is instead of skids would be to put an extra pair of gear bays that you only extend during landing. Keep them up during takeoff so they dont muck up your ability to pitch up. Either that or make sure they are high enough to not interfere but still offer protection.
Hey Scott, I know you fixed your takeoff issues with the weeble-wobble landing gear setup, but another thing you might try doing is removing pitch control from your ailerons. You almost definitely have enough pitch authority with just your tailplane and when your ailerons flip up to try to pitch you up, they add a bunch of downforce, hindering your efforts to take off.

CK2 is truly about people; you play a character, who holds one or more landed titles (count, duke, king, emperor), with many characters in your court, possibly you have vassals under you, you may or may not be beholden to a liege, and opinion, character traits, and the laws of the realm completely define the interactions between all these people. The game is real-time with pausing, no RTS-style troop management, all combat happens in numbers behind the scenes. Each county has multiple holdings that can be improved via building like Total War, but troop production is automatic and based on numerous factors (number, size, and quality of your and your vassals' holdings.) How many troops you can call upon depends heavily upon your vassals' opinion of you and the laws of your realm. Likewise, you provide a levee to your liege based on your opinion of him and the laws of his realm. There is an overall 'meta' game which as Cereals said is that of the dynasty. Every character (as far as I know) is part of a dynasty which determines succession, alliances, etc. Each member of your dynasty that you play earns prestige which contributes to your dynasty's total score which is ostensibly the measure of victory. However, it's not uncommon to die without an heir, be conquered, imprisoned, or otherwise separated from your titles long before the end date of the game. Those possible bad ends besides, it's quite common to start with a stated goal and end when that goal is accomplished, because as of the latest update the game spans a time period of something like 600 years. Anyway, hope the details helped clear things up.

also as an idea for if something goes wrong and they get stuck on eave you could make an emergency life suport habitation module that you could use in case they get stranded on eve for an extended period of time something simple with just a module for them to live in with maybe a years worth of life support that can be detached and parachuted onto the surface of eve

How did you get the ISRU to mount horizontally on the Highlander? The only way I can get it to mount like that is if I put a probe core on the outer edge, and then flip it so it's horizontal. But then my flight controls will be out of whack unless I put something on top and "control from here" every time. Is there anything I can do in the .cfg to fix this? Thanks for your help!! Makes me wonder what kind of spacecraft you would have to build for the CIS-Oort Satellites improvement in Endless Space. Mind you, these satellites are supposed to be between 40 to fifty *thousand* AU, and you're supposed to be able to complete it in just a few years even early in the game.

Then set off a large nuke in the hollow area, How fast could we launch a probe into space? I know the G forces would be a problem but that would seem like a nice way to get things going.
There is a "plan" to do that on earth. Drill a hole in the dessert, drop a nuke (convention, not even a shaped charge one like orion. You could use one of our existing ones!), place several thousand tonnes of ice surrounded by steel and hardened electronics. Detonate. Gets it up to 11kms (you could theoretically use a lunar slingshot to put it in earth orbit). No radiation even escapes the hole. One of the cheapest ways to get into orbit for things like ice (e.g. the most valuable thing in the universe). Or a good way to shoot down aliens.
HALL9000ish If I recall, there is an old story of a manhole cover being launched into orbit due to an underground nuclear test generating enough pressure. The scientists couldn't decide if it was the first manhole cover in space, or if it accelerated so quickly through the atmosphere it melted. Personally I quite like the idea of interstellar visitors bringing a manhole cover back to Earth hundreds of years from now. Along with a littering fine.

Speaking of applying real world logic to KSP, my first launch in an attempt to orbit Kerbin resulted in me accidentally having enough power to escape Kerbin's orbit and ultimately drift around in a Kerbolar orbit. Because I thought I needed to strap a bunch of boosters to a 3.75M rocket, then put a 2.5M rocket on top of that, then put a 1.25M rocket on top of that. Oh and a few of those little baby radial engines for my landing stage. So yeah, that would have probably been sufficient for a real-world Lunar Lander but beyond overkill for KSP.
I, for one, would LOVE to see you do a CK2 series. It's an AMAZING game (Moreso with the addons.). Get The Old Gods, play as the Magyars, laugh as you conquer the world.
JSI camera mod could be useful as mirror, when combined with RPM IVA extention.It looks realy beuatyful, despite the fact that cameras ignore reenrtry and engine flames. Take is as another idea for your next big project ;)

I absolutely live for Europa Universalis IV, and would love to get into Crusader Kings 2, but it's learning curve is much more harsh. I'd love to watch you play it, just because you'd be a much more interesting person to lean it from than the usual players around here.

Historical knowledge is largely irrelevant and not needed anyway, the whole point of CK2 is "what if" history where everyone that mattered in irl history dies within a few years and it becomes a tale of your custom characters taking over the world in some fashion. Also i suspect you would play Scotland which is a interesting challenge :)

Pfft, Don't worry about being a history nut. CK2 is intriguing to watch just because of the alternate history that evolves from its core design. As long as you take an interest in what's going on in the wider (known) world then it's all good. If I'd have known you were a Ck2 player, I'd have challenged you to some CK2 multiplayer back in the days of the KSP tester's IRC.

I'm more into EU4 than Crusaders Kings when it comes to Paradox games, but seeing you play some Crusaders kings would be fun.

Pfft, Don't worry about being a history nut. CK2 is intriguing to watch just because of the alternate history that evolves from its core design. As long as you take an interest in what's going on in the wider (known) world then it's all good. If I'd have known you were a Ck2 player, I'd have challenged you to some CK2 multiplayer back in the days of the KSP tester's IRC.
I would be interested in a CK2 LP from you, if I can open the opinion flood for that LP.

Scott Manley: Crusader Kings II is pretty great, I bought it because of Kikoskia's LP. How about the pan-european Empire of Alba?
