    The animations and graphics of the benchmarks looked really good. I like the highlighting when the notes mattered, such as "lower is better". I usually have to pause those to look closer but this one was really well done that I could watch at full speed and catch all the relevant information. Thanks for always improving, Jay!

      I do not think they will make a part like that since Windows has scheduling issues with large core count cpus such as the 5950X/7950X. More likely to just see a 7800X3D. Maybe a 7700 or 7600 but nothing higher than that.

      For funsies I crunched the numbers and, IF the added cache improves the 7950X to the same extent it improved the 5800X, then we can expect the 7950X3D to yield 20-25% more frames than the 5800X3D in games where the 5800X3D is currently in the lead.
      But there are a lot of unknowns. In addition to the scheduling issues, im not sure how the cache will be able to handle the extra voltage and heat. The cache made the 5800X3D a very cool and low wattage cpu that you cant manually overclock. The 7 series cpus are hot and high wattage cpus that... i guess also cant be manually overclocked because they essentially auto-overclock. Im not sure how they're gonna pull this off, it seems... incompatible? I have faith in team red, but they likely got a serious challenge to overcome.

      I'm going to bet the gap in the lineup (no 7800X) is where they'll put the X3D part. I always thought the 5700 and 5800 were too close, this makes the lineup 6 core, 8 core, 8 core with 3d cache, 12 core and 16 core. A clear difference in each part, which I quite like over a slight freq bump.

    That boot tuning should be done with a progress message on screen showing what it's doing. Because as the CPU designer, they should be able to reconfigure the IO chiplet to drive RAM at the different speeds while keeping the temporary BIOS state somewhere else (like the cache).

    Hey Jay! I don't know if you see this, and I hate to have to write this down before even watching the video - but could you add sandbox/physics games to your benchmarks? I know Besiege and Scrap Mechanic would easily overload these CPUs, and I'd be curious to see how V-cache would affect performance in these types of games. (I'm running a 3700X right now, and it struggles a LOT in most my games.)
    Edit : so, I know that the frequency at which a game gets updated is important for benchmarks. The rarer, the better, in this case (though, I'd love a few more performance updates for Scrap Mechanic, especially a fix for the awful performance hit when you've explored too much in survival mode). So, since Scrap Mechanic rarely gets updates, it would be an excellent, stable game benchmark for years (sadly) at a time.
    Also it seems like I'm top comment (not anymore lol), so thank you all for helping this comment being seen! Oh and, Jay, if you need benchmarks for the games I've proposed, I can probably create a set of benchmarks creations to put a load on the CPU. One thing which would be VERY important to do, though, would be to always use the same creation - and mention that FPS without a heavy creation loaded in and being active doesn't really matter. For example, a CPU with 400 FPS when there's not a lot going on (let's call it CPU A) would look a lot better than one which only has a hundred FPS (CPU B). However, if CPU A only has one or two FPS under heavy load, and CPU B over fifteen (doesn't seem like a lot, but trust me, it is in Scrap Mechanic and Besiege) then CPU B must scale up much better under heavy load on a single core. And I know I'm repeating here, but V-cache tested on these games would be EXTREMELY interesting and useful to know about for many gamers' next builds.

    About AVX-512, I think it also depends a lot on what specific instructions of it you use. There are some instructions that are only half the width, but allow you to do some stuff in a single instruction instead of using multiple. In those cases even the 2 step AVX-512 can be a significant upgrade and AVX-512 on AMD seems to have no performance downside like it does on Intel. Phoronix has some great benches for that topic. Sometimes it adds only a few percent of perf, sometimes it quadruples it!

    • @NJRoadfan
      @NJRoadfan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Lurch7861 Alder Lake doesn't support AVX-512 at all thanks to the E-cores. It would be interesting to see Cinebench on Zen 4 with AVX-512 disabled to get a more direct comparison of IPC. Zen 4's AVX-512 is a bit of a compromise design, so it may not be faster to use vs. AVX2.
      As for overclocking, mainstream CPUs have been doing turbo boost and bouncing off the TjMax thing for awhile now. In regular use I doubt it will be sitting at 95C all that much. Tests like Prime95 and Cinebench are "worst case scenario" and don't reflect real world usage patterns. The reality is most of the time the CPU is idle. Way back in the dark ages before SpeedStep, CPUs ran at 100% power all the time, even when doing nothing!

    • @apersonontheinternet8006
      @apersonontheinternet8006 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The thing is that Intel doesn't need AMD to feel the need to "be pushed". They announced to investors as far back as 2016 that they were technologically limited in their manufacturing capabilities moving forwards and had new fabs in the works. Intel now has two facilities in Arizona nearing completion, another two in Ohio, projected to open in 2024 and another three or four in the works in Europe.
      Think of it like this, Intel has squeezed a lot out of the 14nm chipsets to the point that they stayed relevant, if not the clear leader, for several years up until AMD dropped Ryzen. Once AMD dropped Ryzen Intel was still able to stay in the fight simply by squeezing blood from a rock. Then Intel gets mocked for calling their 10nm their Intel-7 because its 10nm matches the density of 7nm only to drop the 12900k with a ridiculous amount of performance for 10nm no matter which way you cut it. You'd be lying if you said that the 12900k isn't an impressive chip by any measure.
      I will say this, AMD was incredibly smart to kind of rebrand what is expected of an i9 kind of like Intel was smart to rebrand workstations with the i3, 5 and 7 then eventually 9. The irony here is the first i9 models were the 7980XE, 7960X, 7940X and 7920X. AMD basically targeted Intels enterprise level chips and said they could do it on the consumer market for half the price or less. Remember, the i9 was basically in response to the first gen Ryzen that delivered Q1 of 2017 and had never existed before then otherwise I probably would have had one. I think Intel is expected to launch their first chips from the one new fab in 2023; I have tempered expectations simply because I understand the hurdles that come with a new facility, new process, new equipment and technology relatively speaking but do absolute expect it to compete. I expect it to be a few years before we see 7nm or 5nm processes as these other fabs begin to go online but once Intel is on even footing I think we will see some exciting things from both.
      This 7950X looks very appealing but my 10850k has suited me very well even in MSFS2020. I'm probably going to hang tight for another year or two and see what happens. I know one thing, I've never had to deal with USB ghosting or picky RAM and I currently have a lot more than 16 certified choices of RAM to chose from. I seem to have far less driver issues in general than my friends with AMD outside of the occasional windows updates that tend to be annoying for everyone in general.

      The problem with that is that AMD hasn't shown the same ethos for their GPU's at all for nearly decade. It's why Nvidia has gotten more and more bold with their behavior because they are essentially running without serious competition in most market segments.
      When you see Tech Tubers making builds for contests or for testing its a Nvidia card in their rig.
      When you see video card reviews even for AMD cards whose cards are at the top of their performance lists? Nvidia.
      What is the dream GPU for a new build for the majority of gamers? A top end Nvidia card.
      AMD has been more than happy to sit in the budget GPU market and rely on "Being the better value" choice because the needs are so low that they don't need to worry much about posting big numbers and it shows in their mid tier and even more clearly in their often half assed attempts in reaching the top tier markets where performance is more important than just "value".
      Everyone wants to hate on Nvidia but the truth is that Nvidia has read the room and is doing what drives sales and what they can get away with while Intel is trying to get off the ground and AMD is practically sitting in a corner playing on their phone without regard to the rest of the universe.

      @@Hybris51129 not entirely, sure, but I think the 6800 and 6900XT were a big step up all things considered. If they can gain similar ground this generation and refine further the internal infrastructure between their CPUs and GPUs then it could certainly get more interesting in the upper mid tier space. The high end still belongs to Nvidia, yes, but with the way things are looking financially for people and especially considering energy costs, then that will be further out of reach than ever before for most. The market Nvidia is aiming for is ever shrinking, and their ludicrous power draw can hardly be justified in these times. If AMD can bring out something competent enough to compete with say the lower 4080 or a 4070 at a better price then that will be plenty good enough for many that have a foul taste in their mouth from how Nvidia have been lately. They may have read the room, they may have no competition at the highest end, but there are plenty of people I'm sure that would have bought a 40 series with no question that are now suddenly waiting and thinking twice. Time to change things up hopefully.

      @@robertthompson90 I think that people are really over emphasizing the power use issue. I can understand in the European market the price electricity is outrageous but that isn't the case elsewhere.
      The fact that the 4000 series needs a ATX 3.0 power supply actually does again work in Nvidia's favor because people are going to need upgrade their power supplies anyway.
      For a very long time people have had unrealistic expectations that they can have high end hardware but a tiny power supply and tech tubers especially are guilty of pushing this idea as it's part of the carrot chasing "barely enough" mentality that makes people want to upgrade a little bit every year or two instead of paying more up front and actually investing in their computers.
      I think that between the pandemic supply shortages, the bitcoin crisis, and the threats of more shortages to come if China makes a move on Taiwan that we will see people finally start shifting their thinking from short term to long term when it comes to their computers.
      That means getting the best of what you can now and preparing to hold on to it for longer. If somehow AMD can get to a a point where it honestly is on par with Nvidia without having to include any special conditions then I welcome it as the competition is desperately needed.
      Until then its wise to shop more by performance rather than feelings over the conduct of a company because in 5-7 years a lot can change.

      I had to uninstall/reinstall the driver and games to get that issue to stop. For example, once my driver was updated, I’d get momentary black screens until I reinstalled the games it was happening in.

    i love my amd systems..been using them for years and only just upgraded my work rig last year to ryzen 9 3900xt, which has been awesome..was planning to upgrade the cpu to 7950x in the future, but seeing these results makes me think that skipping a generation might be the way forward...but its just the cost of new cpu, ram, motherboard, etc,,when a 7950 would just involve swapping the cpu....so depends how big the gap is and will have to see what happens in the real world when they are released and if it is worth the added cost....

      Good idea for what you are running. The AM5 platform will be supported for 4-5 years so you could skip a generation or two then upgrade.

    After the reviews (several of them) I would have to say that while the CPU's look great the cost of building a system capable of unlocking their full potential removes any "value" that AMD has been famous for. Let's hope RDNA 3 is affordable. So, Jay ... how about an updated water-cooling 101? Even better is it possible to extend an AIO 360 into a second rad?

    Man, AMD sure brought on the whooping on this one. I want to switch to this new AM5 (coming from a Zen 2 CPU), but the DDR5 price is making me think twice. I also wish AMD's GPU side would be like their CPU side, their GPUs are not that good for 3D Artists like me.

      @@Crimsonscythe1 In the US, yes, but I'm from the Philippines so the price hasn't gone down a bit. DDR4 prices are now just $7-$12 cheaper in the last couple of months. The Zen 3 prices are the only ones that have gone down here like $50 cheaper.

    Moved to AMD for my CPU a couple years ago. Still incredibly happy with my Ryzen 9 3900X. Darn thing runs cooler and better than the overclocked Core i7 it replaced, and was half the price at the time. That said, I did just get a 3090 Card, so that graphics card is going to be around for a long while...retirement slows down purchases like expensive PCs. :(

    I believe you mentioned that your AM5 motherboard was an ASRock. I believe a little while back they acknowledged that their memory timing tests were taking a VERY long time, and they've since created new BIOSes that reduce the time significantly. Not sure if the other mobo manufacturers are seeing the same thing.

    • @07wrxtr1
      @07wrxtr1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Asrock is frustrating: they will do great hardware engineering, and then, lackluster bios, bios updates that fix some things and cause other issues. I have learned to wait a few months until they physically ship boards with revised bios already preinstalled vs trying to do updates yourself and going insane in the process

  • @airsheeps

    Such comparison tests are somewhat questionable when only the competitors old gen is available. But i'm curious for the Zen 4 vs Raptor Lake results now. And if Intel comes close again.
    Exciting weeks ahead of us, and i hope for AMD to really make Lex Jensen Luthor over at Nvidia HQ look worried about RX7000 cards. 😀
