Not sure what thank you you're talking about, but he just said thank you when I read that. Oh, now I know what you're talking about, I just had to wait.
To me it seems more about classism. Racial categories less easily shifted, but status symbols can change again and again like belly-stars, or white and colorful fabric, or grammar rules. When lower class people gain the means to catch up, move the goalposts. I think that better describes the Sneeches' hijinx. No less effective a message and no less pointless a problem, though.
Dr. Seuss is among the greatest poets ever. If he were still around he would be just as relevant as he was when he started. Cheers to the best childhood figure one could ask for!
Well, McBean was in it for the money. He knew there was no difference between the star bellied and the plain bellied sneetches but they didn't and refused to accept it so he took advantage of it. He knew they would pay money to be on top. It's like an alien landing on Earth and taking advantage of people's racism.
We don't need an alien to land! Our government, corporate america and the media is making money off of us already during our race, culture and social wars! Think about it...
Presumably because they and their families have been marginalized from the rest of sneetch society for so long that they lack the generational resources to access marshmallows and hot dogs. I'd imagine the star-bellied supremacist society also did things like ghettoize the starless, demolish their homes under auspices of eminent domain to build sprawling, inefficient suburbs, police their neighborhoods with sneetches who knew there would be no consequences if they should happen to be extraordinarily violent, and systematically deny the starless access to every resource they could. Just as an example.
i used to love watching this cartoon as a kid. looking at it now, i find it to be a very smart moral. all the sneetches were basically given plastic surgery so they can match the other sneetches so they wouldn't be segregated from them. i love the part when things got so crazy that they could no longer tell themselves apart from each other. i think it really shows why things like Racism is so stupid because really we may all look different but we are all sneetches.. i mean human... not sure what moral Dr. Suess was intending it to be but that's the moral i got out of it. so what if you look different?
I also think the guy selling the cosmetic surgery was basically the media saying "If you buy this, they'll like you more!" Really ahead of its time. :)
Tasha Burrow that's a good point too! yeah and i like how this cartoon was subtle about it, i rewatched this cartoon alot as a little kid and part of the reason is that it makes you think.
and your absolutely right because it not only teaches children how stupid racism is like you said and also you don't have to judege people by how they look and do and just accept people who there really are great point of view right there

@@melodysmusicaladventures596 Buddy, that's the point of the comment. I'm making a joke about the star belly sneetches acting like they're the ones being discriminated against after they were being blatant bigots.
For years I always wondered why the Plain Bellies didn't host their own fancy parties and games and sporting events-then it suddenly dawned on me-they couldn't because they didn't have the money! The Star Bellies had the cash so they could host all these fancy parties and social events. While Dr. Seuss doesn't actually say that the Star Bellies had cash and the Plain Bellies didn't he hints at it-McBean charges the Star Bellies $10.00 a piece to have their stars removed whereas he charges the Plain Bellies only $3.00 a piece to have stars put on their bellies. The Star Bellies gave more money than the Plain Bellies, therefore they get charged more for their procedure! Great story about class division, class discrimination, and prejudice based on class! Just as relevant today as it was back in the 1850's!!
spy4863 they had the money. How do u think theynpaid for their star-changes lol? They just had low self esteem and wanted to fit in, like ppl with plastic surgery
I loved this one as a kid. I remember watching it on VHS, but the tape was pretty messed up so the footage was staticky. But still, this is one of my favorite Dr. Seuss cartoons.
I remember first watching through a sing-along VHS tape as a kid. It is nostalgic, but...the theme is literally realistic and still relevant today, looking at it as an adult.
Oh, what serendipity! I was just wondering what year this was made! Well, decade, I wasn't sure if it was 70's or not, but that porno music was an indication.
That was the point! Their egos felt deflated until they were told they were superior! But the truth is that we all hold greatness inside of us no matter our appearance or culture, race, sex, etc.
One thing that confused me is that there is no apparent reason the plain bellied Sneetches can't throw their own 'Plain bellied only' parties. They have money, marshmallows and franks aren't expensive, and it seems there are comparable amount of either. Perhaps the the thing that the star bellied Sneetches had was competence. They had parties because they threw parties, they had fun and good fortune because they went and did it while the plain bellies were busy 'moping around on the beaches'
Well, it was interesting that McBean asked for $3.00 eaches of the Plain bellied, and $10.00 eaches of the Star Bellied. Maybe there was an implication in that that the Plain Bellied just didn't have as much money?
Jenifer Joseph there is a clear flaw with your argument. namely that the they the would have have the same amount of many as both groups ran out of money at the same time give or take. also the price to add or remove did not change. if one group had more or less in the beginning then either that group would have stopped at a different point or the prices would have had to be adjusted based on which group they originally belonged to.
The story shows that they were approximately 50% 50% They both ran though both machines. They were lesser because the yielded and said 'ok...' instead of saying 'lol fuck u I'll get my own'
@@bryandenis2549 I have no clue but I hope not. The Butter Battle Book is a story about the cold war and mutually assured destruction, as well as the arms race. Or, he would say, let everyone who is on the beaches LEGALLY participate in the American Dream. Let Mexico, Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc., make their own dream!
The plain belly sneetches were raised to be attentive to the opinions of others (as opposed to star bellies, raised to look down on others), and therefore genuinely believed they were the "worst sneetches". Therefore, even if they had their own parties, they believed it would be nothing like the amazing parties that the "best sneetches" had, and figured they shouldn't even bother. The plain bellies don't want to have parties with the "worst" group - they want to have parties with the "best" group.
That’s part of what has led to America’s downfall in the 21st century. As long as the American public was getting what they wanted when they wanted it, they didn’t care who sold it to them or who’s pockets they were lining i with money. In essence, we ended up funding our own destruction.
McBean represents the political class, who directly profit from the current race/class/gender struggles that they have instigated. Star, no star, they don't care so long as they get rich and get to control people's lives. Before you blow me up, tell me this: name one national Democrat politician who is NOT a millionaire.
Dr. Seuess + a character with complex machinery = an animation experience bar none...witness the restaurant scene from GRINCH GRINCHES THE CAT IN THE HAT (only this time it's a Spike Jones take on Dvorak's Humoresque, performed by Spike's right hand man snd his own band, The Phunharmonic and not a Dean Elliott funk riff)
Sadly, from most of the comments posted here, people think this only applies to race and miss only the other forms this takes. At the time this story was created, racism may have been the overwhelming problem in the western world; however, today classism is in full force and the sneetches in this movie symbolize it very well.
I think this applies best to racism as the problem with the sneetches was their appearance. However, this doesn't mean that we should ignore problems like classism.
Absolutely beautiful. I remember this when I was a boy. Of course there was no video or internet, yet I was completely fascinated with the book nonetheless. It carries a very important message too and I think I caught it 50 years ago. Yep 1960s!!
It's not about 'don't be racist' as don't think one person is more superior to another because of physical characteristics! It goes deeper than skin! It's also saying don't let corporate America, the government, and media take advantage of our greed!
🎶From the heights of Muba Muba, To the Gullies of Ga-Zoo There is nobody else who has one, We're the favorite few who do.🎶 I always loved the Sneetches singing voices when they sing that part.
A really great allegory against any kind of bigotry. I remember seeing this as a kid and am glad to find it again! I hope kids of all ages continue to enjoy this for many generations to come.
I got shown this in class over ten years ago. How I ever forgot it, I simply don't know. I couldn't see it then, how it reflects modern day. Thank you for publishing it, I'll commend you if I may.
Dr. Seuss was a great children’s political author. “The Sneetches” is about racism, “The Butter Battle Book” is a satire of the Cold War’s arms race, and “Horton Hears a Who!” is about abortion and protecting life.
Abortion? I get the protecting life thing, but I don’t see how an entire city inside of a poppy could correlate to a fetus deletus debate. I’d argue it’s more of a “protecting nature” aseop or a lesson in fear mongering (the kangaroo convincing everyone in the jungle to arrest Horton and kill the poppy)
Sylvester McBean was not really the slick con artist who took advantage of the Sneetches, but was also a teacher who showed them how vainglorious they acted with the star/ no star debate

Still one of the most effective allegories for racism.
Just discrimination in general.

And no sneetch is the most popular on the beach upon thars.⭐️

Yes?
Well, McBean was in it for the money. He knew there was no difference between the star bellied and the plain bellied sneetches but they didn't and refused to accept it so he took advantage of it. He knew they would pay money to be on top. It's like an alien landing on Earth and taking advantage of people's racism.

why don't the plain bellies just have their own marshmallow toasts and frankfurter roasts and wave hello to the star bellies with one finger?
I don't see why not.
i thought the same thing as a kid
They were taught to retain the belief that their group is inferior, and desire inclusion
That was best answer out of any of these wannabe psychics. Lol
The star-off machine looks like a crazy fever dream.

i used to love watching this cartoon as a kid. looking at it now, i find it to be a very smart moral. all the sneetches were basically given plastic surgery so they can match the other sneetches so they wouldn't be segregated from them. i love the part when things got so crazy that they could no longer tell themselves apart from each other. i think it really shows why things like Racism is so stupid because really we may all look different but we are all sneetches.. i mean human...
not sure what moral Dr. Suess was intending it to be but that's the moral i got out of it. so what if you look different?
I also think the guy selling the cosmetic surgery was basically the media saying "If you buy this, they'll like you more!" Really ahead of its time. :)

True, true. Ah, the Dr. Seuss fan theories. Those are always fun!
what the star bellied had, that the plain bellies didn't, was favorable treatment by 100% of sneetches.
The story shows that they were approximately 50% 50% They both ran though both machines. They were lesser because the yielded and said 'ok...' instead of saying 'lol fuck u I'll get my own'

You just cannot compete with The Butter Battle Book.
Is that the one that Netflix made a show?
@@bryandenis2549 I have no clue but I hope not.
The Butter Battle Book is a story about the cold war and mutually assured destruction, as well as the arms race.
The name comes from why the two sides are fighting; one side puts butter on top of their toast, the other puts it on the bottom. Dr. Suess put his on the sides.
@@psyxypher3881 Yeah Netflix did a series based on that but they made it VERY kid friendly, it's a sequel to a storyline based off of Green Eggs and Ham and a pretty fun watch if you have the time
The Butter Battle was actually the basis for the 2nd Season of Green Eggs & Ham. While the 1st Season focused on the Book of the same name. The 2nd Season actually bases the plot on the Butter Battle, all while have a Secret Agent theme, and style.
It was actually well made and the animation is gorgeous. If you get the chance to watch I highly recommend it.

As long as the sneetches got what they wanted they didn’t care
That’s part of what has led to America’s downfall in the 21st century. As long as the American public was getting what they wanted when they wanted it, they didn’t care who sold it to them or who’s pockets they were lining i with money.

Sadly, from most of the comments posted here, people think this only applies to race and miss only the other forms this takes. Dr. Seuss was a great children’s political author. “The Sneetches” is about racism, “The Butter Battle Book” is a satire of the Cold War’s arms race, and “Horton Hears a Who!” is about abortion and protecting life.
I didn't know that!
Abortion? I get the protecting life thing, but I don’t see how an entire city inside of a poppy could correlate to a fetus deletus debate.
