How to make AMBIENT ARPS: Behringer Model D vs Pro 1

  • How to make dreamy, beautiful, mesmerising, hypnotic arps on your analog mono synth. I use the same MIDI clip to compare and contrast the Behringer Model D against the Behringer Pro 1. I do live performances on both and explain not only the oscillator setup but also every move I make to the filter, glide, envelopes, and so on. Finally I compare the sounds of the famous ladder filter to the Curtis filter, say which I think sounds better for this kind of hypnotic sound, and explain why. Lastly I include the full performance from the winning analog synth without my voiceover so you can hear it in all its dreamy glory!
    Here is the MIDI clip!: bit.ly/49wsuIg
    00:00 Start
    00:11 Introduction
    01:13 Model D setup
    01:49 Model D live performance
    06:19 An important message
    07:09 Pro 1 setup
    07:36 Pro 1 live performance
    11:45 My thoughts
    15:48 And the winner is...
    17:01 Full winning performance (with no voiceover)

      Thanks - I really appreciate it! This is a very new channel so I’m still figuring out what people want to see. From your point of view are you interested in:
      - hardware synth comparisons?
      - patch ideas?
      - analog vs soft synth comparisons?
      - dawless setup videos?
      I’m trying not to be just another channel does does plugin reviews and hopefully I’ll be doing live streaming where I write and produce entire songs from scratch entirely DAWlessly. Sound interesting?
      I hope you don’t mind me asking, but I would be interested to know…

      @@DistortThePreamp Hey. Thanks for responding. I'd say all four topics really, as I have been searching for those exact topics. For example, I came back to this video for a second time so I can decide which one I should buy first but if you had patch idea videos I would come back for those as well. I think all four topics would be appealing to most people looking to buy these synths. Good luck with your channel!!

      That’s very helpful feedback! I’m also planning livestreams where I write and create synth based pop songs in real time after selecting a random bpm. There will probably be a ‘time challenge’ element to it - maybe 90 mins - but I’m still doing tests and trying to get the streaming tech to work ;)

    You did it again! You have the ears, which is the prerequisite to make great live knob tweaking. I like you keep it slow. It gives your channel a feel that you don’t find elsewhere. Content providers may be afraid that slowness could be detrimental to views, people skipping. But in your case, it encourages me to view your videos when I have time, and not skip a beat! You found a great format.

    Just dropping a note on here to say how much I am enjoying your content. The algorithm matched us at the perfect time as I am just starting out on my hardware synth journey after many years of playing around with vsts. My music background is growing up in the 80's, started DJ'ing around 1996 a did that for around 20 years on and off and have been learning the Piano for the last 2 years, so now is the time to start applying the theory to the styles of music that i am most passionate about. I have just bought the Pro-800 and the Model D is next on my list. Looking forward to your next video. I would love some further content on ambient and particular complex arps. Thanks Pete

      That’s fantastic! The Pro-1 is such a great synth and can do many thinks the Model D can’t. Have a look at my ‘Pluck Off’ video if you haven’t already seen it for an example, but the Pro-1 is probably better at plucks, drones, and of course hard sync sounds which the Model D can’t do at all! I’m working on a load of patch idea videos and will probably do them as comparisons. Do you have the Neutron or any other Behringer (or other) synths? I’m working on a Vox Humana video which involves using the Neutron, Model D, and Pro-1 all patched together…

      That’s a great idea, and I’ll do that! So far all the videos have been dawless hardware which means I’m using hardly any effects (because I don’t have any 😂). In terms of this Ambient Arps video this is literally the sound of a single mono synth (either the Model D or Pro-1) which is going into a very old and cheap Lexicon MX200 which is adding a dotted 8 delay plus some reverb. Then that is going into a Drawmer DS201 gate which is set to duck (see my video about Kick Ducking). The ducking effect is being triggered off a key generated by my 909 (clone) kick track. All the sequencing is done from the Squarp Pyramid which is where I captured the arpeggios in a single live take about half an hour before shooting. The Pyramid is also generating the arps. Thank you so much for caring enough to ask the question! I really appreciate it :)

    Great comparison of the 2 filters and synths in general. The Moog is smoother and more dreamy and the SCI is more funky to my ears and a bit more difficult to dial in/more feisty. I actually love my pro-one for bass - I would say the Moog is better for the material in your sequence and the sound I think you're looking for here. Would love to see a comparison with a Roland SH-101 or Juno, or even JX8-P... My only 3 osc synth is the Erebus 3 and that has a different sound to the pro-one, probably closer to the Moog...

    • @DistortThePreamp
      @DistortThePreamp  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Totally agree about the filters. Ahhh, the JX-8P is such a lovely synth. I find it a bit weird to programme even with the programming module, but it’s two independent envelope structure is so unique. I once spent about a day trying to reverse engineer the ‘Soundtrack’ patch. My eventual conclusion once I understood how it worked was that it’s pretty much impossible unless you have two synths because you need the oscillators to fade in and out under each other. And even with two synths you wouldn’t have the same filter or, of course, Roland chorus. Regrettably the JX-8P left the studio a few months ago. It was very old and those voices are hard and expensive to maintine. Though I’ve got a funny feeling that one day I’ll buy another. I don’t have a 101 at the moment, although my 303 (clone) is surprisingly flexible. It’s not just an acid machine.

      @@DistortThePreamp The JX is a fantastic machine, hugely under-rated, probably due to the sad omission of PWM. The cross mod can create some great textures and I agree it can be tricky to dial in. I should add that I do also have the PG-800 which is essential and which sells for more than the synth itself. Applying modulation or envelope to the tuning while in cross mod mode can create some great sounds, comparable to a Jupiter 8. For me, the JX is the best pad machine south of a Jupiter 8, for a fraction of the cost. Having said that, it can also make some amazing bass and lead sounds, as well as arpegs. It's a secret weapon of sorts and is a unique synth. It's not essential, but for anyone who has a Juno and Prophet already, it's a great addition. I don't have a Juno but I have the Dreadbox Nymphes, which completely scratched that Juno itch - it was my Juno killer and saved me at least a grand - another fantastic synth and incredible value for money once you get past the admittedly cumbersome interface. To your point about the Roland chorus, I also have a CE-1 and an Elkorus 2. The former is the holy grail of chorus and sounds amazing, the latter is arguably the most versatile chorus effect ever created, sadly discontinued. I could go on, as you can imagine 🙂

      I totally agree about the JX being hugely under-rated. TBH I even prefer it as a pad machine over the Jupiter. Yeah, you totally need the programmer and even then uou can’t really ride the filter or other parameters like you can on a more conventional synth (due to the small size of the programmer controls and the fact some of them are stepped) but I *love* the sound it makes. I wish it wasn’t gone.

    Great demo and a very catchy arp/sequence to say all you have going on is a single monophonic synth and a bass drum. There is no wrong answer to this question as both sound great. From your demo the Pro One has the edge for pluck sound as having a separate Decay and Release control allows more sonic nuances in articulation than the Model D. The Model D has the fuller, richer tone with more weight in the bass end. I can listen to this track looping for hours. That ducking when the bass drum cuts in gives a great pulse to the beat. Thanks for the inspiration. The Pro One uses a 4 pole 24 dB/Oct filter not 12dB, although the Curtis CEM 3320 filter chip is a multimode filter. You make a great point about the different sonic qualities of each type of filter. Add Behringer's Odyssey, Cat, MS-20 and WASP alongside the Model D and Pro One and you have 6 very different sounding 24 dB/Octave filters, each with their own musical sweet spot and sonic niche.

      Good question. Everything’s on a patchbay (or, rather, a lot of patchbays) and I just patch it inline with whatever synth I’m using on. Having said that, I always bypass it when I’m tracking seriously into a DAW with the very occasional expecting of delays. It’s not the best hardware reverb I’ve ever owned - I had a Strymon Big Sky until recently which sounded spectacular but I hated the fact it was a pedal rather than a rack unit. Also it felt like a luxury because, as I said, I only use hardware reverbs as ‘mock ups’ and then add reverb in the DAW when I’m mixing.

    • @DistortThePreamp
      @DistortThePreamp  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a great question. I use a hardware sequencer which at the moment is the Squarp Pyramid. I do all my writing in the Pyramid and get the whole song worked up with usually a dozen sound sources playing simultaneously. However, once I’ve started tracking parts into the DAW then I still use the Pyramid but send master clock from the DAW. This way I can programme sequenced overdub parts and ‘play them in’. This also means that I can perform the synth knobs while the part is being tracked in. Having said that, I try to actually perform as many of the overdubs as possible and only use the sequencer for parts which need very strict time. Because it’s midi and in some cases very old midi the tracks are never exactly on the grid. What’s weird though is that in the tests I’ve done (and I’ve done soooo many tests) the vibe and groove sounds *much better* that if I line everything up and force it onto a grid. I know it sounds like snake oil but there really is something magic about all the machines drifting slightly.
      I also do work where I take someone’s soft synths production and re-work it using analog and use exactly the same syncing technique.
      I’ve been considering making a video about my production workflow. Would that be interesting? Or is it too niche?

      Hey Christian, I’m so glad you like the video. The exact model of my Lexicon is the MX200 *however* I’m not sure I’d recommend buying one as, to be honest, it’s a pretty dreadful unit! It’s just about passable for dawless demos, but I would never track with it. The reason I got it was so that I could give vocalists reverb in their phones without any latency, and it does that okay. I’ve just looked up eBay prices and they seem to be selling for £90-£135 which is shocking - I think I got mine for about £45. The best Lexicon software plugin is the Relab emulation of the 480L, and the second best is the UA emulation of the 224. HOWEVER the best software reverb IMO is without a doubt the Valhalla Vintage Reverb which does a very good emulation of some key old Lexicon sounds if you know the patches you’re looking for. It’s very much a staple of modern productions and it just sounds wonderful. It’s also cheap, though that’s not really why it’s popular because Dua Lipa’s producer could use anything he wants and he uses the Valhalla Vintage. If you want the best sounding hardware reverb then, again IMO, it’s the Strymon Big Sky. I had one and sold it because my setup is really all about rack units and the Strymon is only available as a pedal (despite being ridiculously high spec). The Strymon is also horribly expensive. So, if you’re out of the box maybe get a super cheap reverb - consider an old Alesis Quadraverb - and if you’re in the box it’s Valhalla all the way! One final tip: I also use the Valhalla Shimmer Reverb as a special effect and I think that’s free! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment.

    • @DistortThePreamp
      @DistortThePreamp  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's such an interesting question. One way you could do it would be to route the oscillator sound out of the Model D (ie bypassing the filter) into the Neutron and then use it's filter and envelope. But I think what you're asking is whether you could use the Model D filter but the Neutron envelope? The answer is that I don't think so. I'm fairly sure that the Neutron and Pro-1 have digital envelopes (which I'm fine with) whereas the Model D has pure analog envelopes. The reason as I may have mentioned in one of the videos (can't remember which) is that there's some slightly suspicious language Behringer used for it's marketing along the lines of the Model D being 'all analog' and the Pro-1 being 'all analog signal path. The upshot is that it would be harder for Behringer to, say, change the Model D's envelope speed with a firmware update (which is what they did with the Pro-800). Although of course, the Model D's envelopes are very faithful to the Minimoog original. Anyway, I think my advice would be that if you love the sound of the Model D and don't need the Pro-1 special features (like oscillator sync) then go for the Model D and I bet you'll love it! Buy it second hand after researching the price and, worst case, you can always sell it on :-) Thanks for the great question, and for watching!

      I think that's a very good choice and I've done pretty much the same thing. I'm totally dawless for writing, production, and tracking vocals, but then I track into a daw and mix in the box. There are a couple of things that I do that might be relevant to your setup: (1) If I'm tracking through outboard (compressors, delays, etc) then I usually record a 'safety' track at the same time without any of the outboard processing. I don't think I've ever had to use it but it's good to know it's there, especially with vocals. (2) I often do overdubs using my hardware sequencer which is clocked to my daw, but once I'm mixing in the box I *never* go back out for hardware mix tools. Well, almost never, and on the very rare occasion that I do I'm re-track back in so really it's just another kind of overdub.
      Finally, I've found that my mixing time is SLASHED -- there's something about tracking using 'real' instruments that means that you get the sound right from the word go. I can easily mix a full song with 50+ tracks in 3 hours, sometimes less. Before it not only took longer but there was a blurred line between production and mixing which meant that nothing really ever felt properly finished.

    • @DistortThePreamp
      @DistortThePreamp  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Brilliant idea. You're gonna want to do that but also run them separately depending on the situation. Personally I'm less interested in using multiple monos to make a poly chord, but very interested in moving chords where all chords have the same number of notes and each note is played by a different mono This is exactly how English hymns work -- every hymn has exactly four parts: treble, alto, tenor, bass. The chord progressions may be simple, but the listener ends up hearing each part as it's own melody because a tenor's voice sounds different to an alto's voice. The other thing I do with my monos is patch between them to 'borrow' filters and LFOs. For example I made the famous Vox Humana patch the other day which requires two oscillators and three LFOs. I used by Neutron but borrowed two more LFOs from my Model D and Pro-1. Really appreciate you watching, and your comment!

      The arps were captured in a live take. I played chords on my Arturia KeystepPro which was sending midi into my Squarp Pyramid which was capturing the notes played. The arpeggios were generated in real time by the Pyramid and I had set up the monitoring synth (probably the Model D) with an LFO to slowly change the filter so it would sound a bit more like how it would eventually come out. I was also playing into a hardware delay and reverb. From memory I don’t think I was monitoring a kick - I think I did it all using the arp timing as my clock. I think I set the capture time at something like 128 bars and then at some point I just stopped playing. Then I played back the midi clip into both synths and rode the knobs live - that’s on the video. You can see the actual notes I played from the midi clip. Really appreciate you watching and the comment :)

      For this music I actually agree. It’s a little surprising how different they sound - the Model D is soooo thick. Although the Pro-1 is still a wonderful synth and, for Plucks, it has an edge because the envelopes are so fast. Also there are a lot of sounds it can make that the Model D can’t. Obv that’s why you need both 😉

    Beginner question: what sequencer/keyboard/or whatever are you using or what you recommend me????? Arpeggiator??

    • @DistortThePreamp
      @DistortThePreamp  หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a great question. I’m using the Squarp Pyramid as a hardware sequencer with an Arturia Keystep Pro as my keyboard. The Pyramid is controlling a whole range of sound sources on three different midi circuits: three drum machines, about a dozen synth patches, and more. And I’ve got 16 inputs into Pro Tools that I use for recording. So it sounds great, but it’s definitely not a beginner’s setup.
      In terms of making a recommendation to you, it definitely depends what level you are at. If you are just starting out and want to make electronic music then I would recommend you use a daw like Ableton or Logic with a cheap USB controller keyboard. If you’re quite experienced and want to start experimenting with a dawless workflow then I would recommend gettting a single mono synth (see my video on ‘Let me choose your first synth…) but sequencing it from the daw. Although you should always try to play parts in (see the video I’m just about to release!) But I probably would not recommend getting a hardware sequencer unless you’re either very experienced or 100% certain that you want to go dawless.
      Does this help?

    Is the Arp sidechained to the kick or is that just the brain affect? For me it's about the emotional response that comes from the gradual pitch change as much as it is the psych0-acoustic effect. Hypnotic is the exact word for it. It's very primal.

    • @DistortThePreamp
      @DistortThePreamp  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m so pleased that you like it! It’s a sidechain style effect, though I did it in real time with a hardware analog gate set to ‘duck’ mode. So yes, it was ducked whenever the kick hit :-) If I was in the box I’d get the same effect either with a compressor sidechained from the kick, or tbh more simply with something like LFO Tool (Xfer) or Shaperbox (Cable Guys).

    • @DistortThePreamp
      @DistortThePreamp  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s the RD9 (Behringer’s 909 clone)! It’s not the only drum machine I have but for this sort of thing the ‘roundness’ of the analog kick works really well I think. However I’m also sending a pulse to a special unit that’s doing the ducking against the kick. That’s another reason to use the RD9 - it has three trigger outputs that I use as keys for sidechains. I’ve been editing a video all day about this so hopefully it will come out tomorrow :-) Thanks for watching and for the comment. This is a very new channel so I *really* appreciate it!

    Standard comment about not choosing which one to buy, but which one to buy first. The answer is the 2600 🤣

    • @DistortThePreamp
      @DistortThePreamp  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Haha -- the 2600 is a really amazing synth. There are three reasons I didn't end up recommending it: (1) I think it's a bit intimidating for a first time synth user. (2) the form factor is probably too big for most desktops unless you stand it up. (3) it's more expensive than the cheaper mono synths. Having said all of that, in my opinion the 2600 is the best mono synth you can buy! And, for someone with the space and the budget, once they'd learned how to program synths I wouldn't hesitate it making it the top recommendation!

      @@DistortThePreamp the blue one is £399 atm, picking it up as soon as I get paid. I'm hoping. It will kill my GAS for eurorack

    • @DistortThePreamp
      @DistortThePreamp  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's a great price and, as you say, it might just kill your yearning for a full-on modular system. I avoided Eurocrack GAS by getting the Neutron which I use in conjunction with my other semi-modular mono synths. I'm in the process of making a video about how to make the Vox Humana sound (made famous by Gary Numan) on the Neutron. You need three LFOs so I borrow LFOs from the Model D and the Pro-1 and patch them in. On the 2600, however, you would use the two dedicated LFOs and make a third from one of the VCOs which would still leave you the two oscillators you need. Separately, I really like multi-mode filters -- claps work really well with a resonant HPF, and notches have their use too.
