So much better than the Thomson's water seal crap that just flakes off especially if you don't prep the wood. I'll never forget back when I was about 6 about 37 years ago, my father put a new deck on the house and put a "deck stain" on the whole thing and all of it just peeled off after a year. I love how you show the prep process because it's so important and overlooked.

I would need maybe 3 cans, would cost half price the wood needed for the wall. I kept your earlier recommendations years agk on oil vs stains.

I used a Benjamin Moore oil based stain when I built my cedar deck... it peeled the next year. I then ordered the water based Defy Extreme.... I sanded and applied, and it didn’t peel two years after. I just washed and applied a new coat last spring because it was getting a bit pale.

while using this product, I always recommand to people to just use the hose for cleaning, since pressure washer breaks the wood grain if used to close. worst case scenario is that your wood will need sanding after using the pressure washer, if the only equipment you have is a pressure washer, use it 1 meter + away from the wood to reduce the impact of the water going inside the wood and opening all the grains of it, good luck!

@@ravneiv I neglected my deck for several years and it was pretty ugly and totally covered in mold growth. I used a pressure washer back in September and it removed every bit of mold with no visible damage to the wood. For full disclosure, about 10 years ago I did use a gas powered pressure washer 2700 PSI with a 10 degree tip and I did damage the wood grain. as DivisnGaming said. However, when I pressure washed it recently, I used a lower powered 1700 PSI electric pressure washer and I did use the 10 degree tip, but the deck was undamaged. Just budget about a day's worth of work because it will be time consuming but the end result will make your deck look 100 times better.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I actually did it not long after installation but Iron Wood is so dense and naturally oily that the Penofin just washed off. Now, the surface is a light gray vice the original walnut, but there is still no checking or cracking. I may still opt to thoroughly wash it of any surface biological or debris and try oiling. My worry is that I may then unnecessarily be obligating me to routine "touching up" when things seem just fine now. Ipye/Iron Wood is a bit different from most other materials. Maybe he's planning to add something else to that end of the deck, like maybe a hot tub that hasn't come in yet from an order, and he wanted to get the staining done before bad weather hits. I too like the 'style' of his videos, but his recommendation/endorsements seem...fickle, which is either a good sign, because it means that he is actively staying abreast of new products, each as they are come to market and is not bound financially to the previous product, or...its bad, because it means that his endorsement are newly available for purchase each season to newer, hopefully 'as good' (to keeps things ethical) products, when the term of his previous short-term endorsement has lapsed. Just in terms of deck stains, there are no fewer than 3 different sealer/stain product recommendations posted all within less that 2 years of each other: Ozmo, C2 Guard, and Olympic (there may in fact be more too if you persevere or count partial recommendations like Thompson's Water Seal Clear). It may be the case that they are all similarly satisfactory and he should say so, otherwise is just an advertisement (possibly bought and paid for; if only with product to make the video), but then that's no recommendation at all.
