This is how a video is done people. Very well shot, good lighting and great presentation. I like how it shows everything from seed to harvest, very concise and fluid. Didn't "beet" around the bush with multiple videos either.

Excellent video all the way however all of Charles Dowding videos I have listened to I have a hard time with the audio being loud enough. Maybe no one else has this issue so I don't want to criticize it but I listen to other videos that i hear fine. But well done for sure.

The beetroot is my absolute nemesis! It hates me! Probably because I am the most irregular waterer in the world......... but next year I WILL SUCCEED! 💪
By the way, I loooooooooove how the leaves sound when the beets were pulled, so crispy, perfectly cared for!! 😍 music to my ears (my kids declared me an idiot when I watched/listened to that bit if the video over and over and over again)

Charles reminds me of my beloved father, who was a passionate farmer. Learning from him feels like learning from my father. As a kid I found it quite embarrassing, coming from a farmer‘s family. Later in life you come to understand your origin and the worth of what your parents showed you and taught you. I hope to have a very big garden some day. It is healthy in every way. 😊

I come from the same place. I was ashamed of my grandparents because others devalued them since they had pigs, chickens, and huge garden. Imagine that? Twisted values. Today I follow their footsteps and grow my own veggies.. I couldn’t be more proud of role models they have set up for me and my children. Land is a BLESSING FROM GOD! Blessings to all fellow farmers 😊❤

and for the rest of the video: i actually belong(ed) to the type of people mentioned that only knew pickled beetroot before, until last year when i grew , harvested and ate my first selfgrown crop. your fine video just came in time to learn more, because this year it hasn't been going so well. my question is: you start early in feb. with a particularly suited variety, but how and how long can you resow, and how late can you harvest?

Thank you SO MUCH for this idea. After years of only knowing to direct-sowing beets, I decided to give this a try. I've never grown such beautiful, healthy beets. With presoaking, the seeds germinate quickly and get a strong start in the trays. Harvesting when the roots are about egg-sized, I got four harvests (each a week apart), with all but the last having the most beautiful, long-stemmed greens one could hope for. This is THE way I'll be growing beets from now on.

I love this idea of multi sowing the beets! I grew only 2 individual ones this year (2021) to push myself to grow something “I don’t care to eat” and try to expand my tastebuds, I have tried them pickled and roasted. They are both ‘ok’. Then in sept I tried a raw shredded beet and carrot salad with fresh herbs and vinaigrette & I’m a changed woman! Now I’m searching up how to grow beets and planning where and what varieties I’m going to grow in 2022 😁 This video has me so excited!!! Thank you Charles !

I've watched this video quite a few times over the last year or so and I've just realised why my beetroot don't grow so close together as yours. When sowing because like you say the seeds are quite big, I sow them in a little square rather than like you are doing, altogether in your little hole. As I've yet to do mine I will be copying what I've seen! I have to confess that I'm envious of how quickly your vegetables grow, I live in Berkshire but my growing areas do compete with some overhead mature trees whereas you haven't any overhead competition. I really appreciate the time you give to these clips, thank-you Charles for all the advice you give.

I found your channel last night by luck and i'm learning some neat tricks. I'm downsizing my veg plot a little this winter to make space for a project so i'm looking for ways to maintain and maybe even increase vegetable harvests. I've always cell grown beetroot and thinned to single plants so now i will be quadrupling my beloved beetroot harvests. Thanks to you and to your thoroughly detailed videos.

I had many, they are difficult creatures ;), the current one I bought in Lidl (supermarket), it is great, doing its job, and with a tooth brush, I can clean the finest sieve in few minutes. the rest throw it in the dishwasher doing fine. (I hope I helped), Lidl has multiple time a year juicer in their stock.

I’d planted some beetroots in the garden last year, and left them there because some were too small. Surprise, surprise, none of them were killed by hard frost up to minus eight degrees in my region. Just checked them today, a few are getting ready to eat. Nature never stops being so amazing.

Hey Charles! As it ticks over to March on Monday here in the subtropical Eden of the antipodes, I find myself yearning for beetroot which I like for both the leaves and the roots, since growing them for the first time last year. I must confess that I was previously only interested in them when they were pickled and appeared on the top of a real Aussie burger. Tomorrow I plan to multi-sow in accordance with your advice, Chioggia which is an Italian variety known for its concentric pale and pink colored flesh. Stay safe and test negative. Alla Prossima!

i'm having a shocker with beetroot this year, from 300 seeds planted i have 6 that germinated. I love the stuff though, so versatile, so tasty, i especially love using the leaves as cut and come again salad leaves. Thanks for the inspiration Charles, I'm off to plant some more :-)

    • @1stBumbleBeeMaster

Yes totally agree. The best way to get seeds is to get a few large Beetroots that are heirloom and organic. The bigger the better. Plant them in the ground around may time after starting them off in pots until they are nearly pot bound. Then just let them grow and flower and let the Bees do the work of pollinating. I absolutely guarantee you will get better Beets then from shop bought seeds. A lot of commercial seeds are old even before they package them. I planted a whole packet of 15 sunflowers just 3 germinated, The quality this year in bought seeds is quite shocking. I thought I was the only one this has happened to but asking around there seems to be lots of people saying exactly the same.
Fresh Home Grown SEEDS is the best way.
I am not trying to give free advertizing here but please try Realseeds.com Never had a single issue with their seeds. every thing has grown well. They are organic and heirloom and they even encourage you to save your own seeds.

I used your method for growing beets this spring, and I was surprised by how quickly they grew from planting to harvest. I had good-sized beets in about 4-5 weeks. At 8 weeks, I have some monster 4 inch beets that are now destined for a borscht stew. The only thing I didn't do was to plant them deep, as I see you doing here. They grew fine, but tended to flop over as they weren't as well anchored in the soil as they might be. Lesson learned, and I'll plant my seedlings deeper next time. Thanks again!

I am getting ready to sow some beet roots in a week or so. It is Dec 20 2018. I am sowing them inside and will transplant them in a unheated high tunnel when ready. I live in Tn. in the U.S. I am re-watching this video as i have never sowed beet root in trays. I just sowed them in the ground. It seems to me that this will be a better way to do it. Thanks Charles for all of your info from your years of experience. This is starting my second year of no dig an i think that it is the only way to garden !!!!

@@CharlesDowding1nodig -Thanks for the reply Charles. The last few years i sowed beets, lettuce, carrots, and spinach in the ground in the unheated high tunnel in late janusry and after they came up in 1-2 weeks i put row cover over them. They made every year so far. So starting them under light inside around the end of Dec. and transplanting them in 4-5 weeks i think they will be alright. I plan to find out anyway. In late January and early Feb we are subject to some pretty cold temps and also pretty warm temps. It fluctuates a lot here in the upper south. I am sure they will freeze and thaw a few times, but i think they will be alright.

I was one who had only eaten canned, pickled beets as a child. I was off them for decades. When they were sreved in the cafeteria at work a few years ago, I decided to give them another try. I was pleasantly surprised. I don't know if it was because my tastes have changed or the beets were prepared differently, but I liked them. I've really missed out over more than 35 years. I am 67 years old and this makes it a lot easier to work, no bending over. Cheers.
