These locos were used on the SR until the end of steam. The version with the late crest would be in the correct era for a 3rd rail layout with Bachnann DEMUs and EMUs. So if you model Southern Region, then this is a helpful review. Thanks for uploading.

  • @paulsngaugechannel

Southern region locomotives, steam , diesel and electric always are close to my heart. Being born in Kent, a lot of memories of the latter days of steam. Electric trains and diesel engines are more common in my memories. The old double decker trains ( only 2 produced) were my fondness, as my father was a guard scheduled on them, and although he complained about loading them and unloading them, they were unique. Like a lot of secr, southern etc, the varying shades of green are often forgotten. Nice loco though. The C class were lovely, never seen one for real, but have seen lots in videos/film. Long time ago. Well done in re reviewing.

I have three of these C class, all bought at a time when prices were more reasonable (c. £70-ish), including the fully lined SECR livery on 592, which was the same price as the others at the time I purchased it. I also have another SECR version with simplified lining, and a BR late crest black one. All are great runners, and slow running with decent DCC decoders is also very good.
I have not noted the large gap under the cab sides that you have on your model, so it may have been a rogue one that escaped the quality control. It would have been interesting to see if your BR one had the same thing.

A great little loco, had mine awhile but always runs smoothly and looks great even in late br livery with a small goods rake. Bachmann made a series of superb little locos in the past before the prices went crazy. Good to see it reviewed again Sam.

  • @lindaoffenbach
    @lindaoffenbach 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Lovely Loco Sam. Oh yes, all that lining on British steamers usually looks so enticing and first-rate.. Prussian locos had something similar. How on earth did they keep them clean.
£102 is a good deal. Max ~120 as an RRP should be about okay, but £200 is indeed typically beyond B ridiculous, lol. For that it should not have omitted at least lights, a 5-pole, flywheel and pick-ups on all the wheels including the tender, nor should that whopping gap between the cab and plate exist for that matter (knocks off one star immediately for us). Evidently, the wired connection between the tender and loco should have been premium professionally done as well.
As it is, ~100 max. Had it all-wheel pickups, then 120 as maximum but still that gap is rather annoying. However, at £102 she's a good deal Sam 👍 Cheerio.

Hi Sam. I have a couple of these Backmann C class O-6-0 tender locomotives which I got for about a £100 each from a now closed down shop in Worthing. I am keeping my eye open for another one in the SE&CR green livery which I think is a gorgeous livery. I have got the SE&CR D class in the as preserved green livery locomotion and it's a superb model. I haven't got as many locomotives as you have but I was watching you count up you 500 locos while I was trying to locate your review of the C class locomotive. I will have to search for it again as I enjoyed your review of the C class when I did find it. Bye from Ian.

    Hi Sam
I do have two of these loco's the lined black one that you reviewed and the SECR Green one from the original batch. They are both lovely especially the green one but I only paid £120 for it brand new so the new prices are obsurd in my opinion expecially when newer 060s have completely beaten it in nearly every area the Hornby J36, J15, Bachmann's 812 are a few examples. I think the newer secr green one released in 2018/2019 time and I do recall that even they were sitting on the shelves of the retailers for years so I think if the price is bad enough even the nice liveries dont sell well. I think Hornby had a TTS sound Flying Scotsman out at the same time which you could get for and less than the RRP of the C class which was crazy.

Nice review - good to see some older claasics like this looked at. I was viewing some videos of 'real' locos on preserved railways, and found myself drifting into a 'Sam's Trains' attitude - not sure if that dome has been fitted as well as it could have been etc.! Many rthanks for keeping up the standards

    • @InventorZahran
      @InventorZahran 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The steam effect is very realistic, and the sounds from the pre-fitted speaker are perfectly in-sync. There are no traction tires fitted - which is good, but there do not appear to be any pickups on the tender wheels - which is not good. But at least there are separately fitted vacuum pipes and usable three-link couplings on the front and rear!

@@SamsTrains For my own, in 0-6-0 tender, I like the boxy engines of the LMS like the 4F, or the LNER J36, and I have a touch on the Drummond 700 with her corny shaped boiler. The J27 is nice but a little bit too "generic" for me.

I think you ought to show instillation of the brake rigging on an upcoming review. In light of the tight curves I can see why you don’t do that. I think it would be useful to show that as some would be easier than others or not worth the effort if it’s too difficult.

Those subtle green trims on boiler are somehow pretty great idea visually, never thought black would go this well with cold colour like green.
hmm over 100 years is not that much, considering the Rainhill trials are almost 2 centuries ago.
Early loco from before 1'850s maybe up to 1'880s i get but once you get the 1'900 its very quickly barrelling to retirement of steam, i'd conssider thi- ahrem last century to be the mid-late steamers.
Sorry i am being weird again.. or still.
kinda wanna make class c joke about it being class*y, but its c class rather than having the letter on other end of the word.
    glad it is still beloved.

I saw you just got into n scale. I saw on train world that bachmann is realesing a narrow gauge talyllyn locomotive that runs on n scale track. The talyllyn steam locomotive is the real version of skarloy from thomas and friends. The talyllyn railroad is in wales and was the first officailly preserved railroad in the world. Its been in operation sence 1864. It still has the same 2 locomotives it had from day one. The talyllyn locomotive and the Dolgoch locomotive which is the engine Rheneas. You can preorder it for 110 pounds or so on train world and its realese date is 12/31/23. it would be so cool if you reviewed it so i could know if its good or not.

Hi Sam, good and useful review as always.
I've a video suggestion for you,. How about an overview of the different manufacturers as IMO each have their pros and cons?
What in your opinion are things each tend to be good at and which not so good? What areas have you noticed them improving in recently? etc.
Obviously these would be generalisations and an opinion piece, but I'm sure this would generate plenty of discussion whether viewers agree/disagree, have their own likes and dislikes etc. Done respectfully it might provide helpful feedback for manufacturers too.
e.g. IMO Bachmann' strengths and weaknesses are:
    - Tend to be high detail models, though still some old tooling ones which aren't as good.
    - The finish of their locos is arguably the best out there.
    - Good range of models.
    - Traditionally mechanisms aren't the best, though there has been some improvement in recent models.
    - High prices, making them poor value, especially for re-releases of older tooling models.
    Hornby:
    - Tend to be good, reliable mechanisms IMO.
    - Traditionally not the best for detail or finish, however in recent years there have been big improvements in this regard.
    - Quality control not always the best.
    - Huge range of models, though not always a wide range of liveries available. Have models catering to different parts of the market e.g. Railroad for those on a budget or who prefer more robust models. Dublo for those willing to pay more for diecast and Collectors.
    - Relatively high prices, though not as bad as Bachmann and budget models in the Railroad range. Some older tooling models still in the main range and priced as such, which should probably be moved to the Railroad Range.
    - Packaging on recent models has seen big improvements in line with other manufacturers.
    Others:
I don't have any models yet of other manufacturers yet, though I've an Accurascale class 37 on order and have been impressed with their customer service/response to queries I had, so can't comment from experience.
Since you've reviewed models from a wide range of manufacturers it would be good to have your views.

I have nearly the same as yours, ref. 31-464, running number 1583 in Southern black. I had to take a magnifier and extra light to see the lining on mine : it is there ! By the way, I don't have the cab fitting issue you have.
Overall, yes, it is a dated model one, even two notches below what you can get from Hornby with their J15 and their Drummond 700, and from Oxford Rail with their J27. Closest from her, the Dapol GWR Mogul also outclasses her. But I will qualify her as overall correct (the rank over acceptable and below fair for me) : does the job, looks nice, but not really far over the basic requirements for a functional model. Fair, if not good : the lining and the overall quality, acceptable : the drivetrain (below correct due to the lack of tender pickups), correct : the overall performances (can be used as the branchline queen the prototype was), good : the cab details.
I bought mine at TMC when they started with their shotgun bargain of 50%, because GBP 103 is her real price with a Q/P ratio I would qualify as fair (at GBP 90, she would have qualify for good). At GBP 200, I'm too polite to write my comment here on the Q/P ratio with such a price, and give the advice to turn 180° in front of the offer and run away as fast as you can. I don't regret my buy, but it won't have happened without the shotgun bargain from TMC.

It's a shame that the C class in SECR green livery is so expensive; I would probably own one if she was less than £130. I don't care for the Southern and BR liveries because I don't think green lining goes well with black (quite the opposite) and the plain black is incredibly boring.
But I do agree with Sam on the RRP. Over two hundred pounds is ludicrous for a basic 0-6-0.

Very nice steamy, although I don't have room for her. Thankyou so much for screaming in front of the camera, it was so hilariously funny. Of course, I'd better tone things down a bit because you don't want to lose your voice. I know I said this before, but I'll say it again: you're cute when you get scared.

The C class from Bachmann looks very nice and the quality is pretty solid which I like it. Unfortunately, I do have to agree with you about the price for the C class being expensive. It is definitely not worth over 200 British pounds because it does not a modern mechanism and no tender pickups along with being quite old. Overall, the C class is still a pretty good model Sam. By the way, are you planning to review the new Hornby 2MT locomotive on your channel soon because I really want to know how its mechanism looks like in your opinion Sam. Please stop avoiding my questions Sam because I am getting tired of you not answering my questions.

Overrated since it has no tender pick-ups. That's a no deal for me. And I prefer by miles the Hornby J15 that has a 5-pole motor with flywheel and costed less than this C-Class. I own 3 Bachmann steam loco's and they are poor runners compared with Hornby's. Stalling on points is the order of the day. It looks lovely though - but as my late father said: "a small light in a big lantern". Thanks for reviewing !
