"Yellow brick road" may be an allusion to "streets paved with gold", so it's a reference to the big city. It's about a farm boy who went to the big city to "make his fortune", but got disenchanted with the rat race, so he decides to return to the simpler, less stressful country life. Hence the lyric "I'm going back to my plough."

The yellow brick road in the wizard of OZ refers to the Gold standard for Money, the emerald city refers to fake fiat money replacement and the wizard (reality little old man) hiding behind the "Green screen" and fake scary imagery, are the global investors who control it. The Strawman represents the Farmers, the Tin man represents industry and the Lion represents the military, who were at the time (and still are) being shafted by the wizard. All thats required to discover the truth and put it right, are a little bit of brains, a little bit heart and little bit of courage. important to note the wizard doesnt actually give them those things, they already had them as their support of Dorothy showed.
When he says goodbye yellow brick road he means he's rejecting greed of money in the big city for a simpler more virtuous life back on the farm, which is where Dorothy ultimately ends back up too.

Such a phenomenal song. I think it's wistful and bittersweet. He's longing for what he thought it would be. But he is happy to be going back to where he feels like he belongs.
Remember, when it comes to Elton John songs Elton writes the music and Berie Taupin writes the lyrics. They collaborate without hardly ever working with each other in person. They are one of the greatest song writing teams ever.

1970's Elton John was the best, and hats off the Bernie Taupin for the lyrics.
The yellow brick road is two things. It leads to your heart's desire or whatever, and Wizard of Oz starring Judy Garland as Dorothy was a huge gay cultural thing for decades: Garland was a gay icon, "a friend of Dorothy" used to be a discreet way to express that a guy was gay, people read all kinds of things into The Cowardly Lion and The Tin Woodman etc.
The song is, at a surface level reading, about a naive farm boy who's living in the big city as a wealthy older man's sugar baby, and as a metaphor it's about the lyricist Bernie Taupin (Elton John's writing partner 1967-1980 and 1983-today) being swept up in Elton John's wake into the world of showbiz glamour, Hollywood, etc, and feeling very uncomfortable about it all.
This was probably Elton's best album; lots of great ones, but this one stands out. It was a double album (two records) and had a whole string of hits on it.

"Yellow Brick Road" is a reference to the dream world in The Wizard of Oz -- thus the suggestion that what the road leads to isn't what it seemed before setting out on the journey. "You Can't Keep Me In Your Penthouse" is about not liking the way he's being treated like property -- a valuable commodity. Bernie Taupin's lyrics are brilliant. He was quite aware of what record industry people thought of him and his friend Elton, and helped him vent their shared frustration.

The narrator is saying goodbye to the ‘yellow brick road’ which is a symbol of wealth and fame, because he wants to take back control of his life. He does not want the fame and fortune to define him, and prefers to be back to his farming roots where he can live a more peaceful life.

Just saw Elton in Foxboro, MA last week. Last time I saw him was in NYC in 1984 + 1985, and I can say last week's show was the best I've seen, in almost every way you can think of: performances, lighting, video, effects, everything.

@@BobbyGeneric145 His voice was lower pitch.....but it was super strong. He's freaking 75. His voice isn't weak, its just a little lower. His piano playing, however, was not degraded in any way.
I was at Gillette on the 27th he sound great. The show was pretty awesome. His voice was in good for and his band was excellent.

A cornerstone of Elton's discography. First time I heard it in 1973, I was hooked. It still brings a tear to my eye.

I can't remember where I read this, but I heard that Elton was getting tired of the demands being placed on him by the label. He was longing for a simpler time when things were not nearly as chaotic in his life despite all of the success, fame, and money that he now had. That part of the song that mentions about maybe getting a replacement and that there are plenty of takes who ain't got a penny. I always took that to mean that Elton could just go away and they could grab any number of artists who would be willing to take or do whatever without question.
This is how I heard Bernie Taupin explain the song too.
I've heard them say that they were referring to fame in general, though it is certainly true that Elton had already had some difficulties with his record label (the glut of product they released in 1971, the fact that they made Elton pay for the promotion of the "Daniel" single unless it made it into the Top 10 because they didn't want to put it out and he did, etc.) Funny enough, he'd encounter even further issues with Dick James Music with the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. Elton had hoped that the double album would count as two records for the purposes of fulfilling his contract. However, Dick James only counted it as one, so Elton had to rush into the studio the next year between tours and write and record a whole album in 8-10 days (the result was the Caribou album).
I remember he toured with Billy Joel for a summer or two. One of the best shows I went to.

This is absolutely a happy song. He is celebrating his exit from the corporate world, the office job and going back to nature, back to the farm. This is a great song of escape. And the joy is felt in the wonderful chorus.
Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics, Elton John wrote the music…in Bernie’s own words, this is the meaning to his lyrics:
“There was a period when I was going through that whole ‘got to get back to my roots’ thing, which spawned a lot of like-minded songs in the early days, this being one of them,” Taupin says about the origins of “Goodbe Yellow Brick Road.” “I don’t believe I was ever turning my back on success or saying I didn’t want it. I just don’t believe I was ever that naïve. I think I was just hoping that maybe there was a happy medium way to exist successfully in a more tranquil setting. My only naiveté, I guess, was believing I could do it so early on. I had to travel a long road and visit the school of hard knocks before I could come even close to achieving that goal.”
In Taupin’s rendering, the Yellow Brick Road is a path to artifice and deceit, a far cry from the owls and toads and ploughs on the farm from whence the narrator came. He purposely overplays the bumpkin act as a way of zinging a controlling romantic partner who wanted to prop him up in her penthouse “where the dogs of society howl.”

Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to this and most of Elton's other songs. He often seems to write about Elton, but this one appears to be about himself. The lyrics are about giving up a life of opulence for one of simplicity in a rural setting. Elton has enjoyed a very extravagant lifestyle, while Taupin prefers to keep it low key.
Yeah Bernie lived in rural Lincolnshire as a child ,in fact my mum went to the same junior scholol as Bernie in a little village called Tealby deep in the Lincolnshire Wolds in the 50s .

When I was a teenager I went through a classic rock phase & my bestie had gotten this beater car when she turned 16 that literally only had an 8 track player. The car actually came with some 8 tracks bc where would you even find those? But one of them had yellow brick road on it. I wasn’t the biggest Elton John fan before, but some of the other 8 tracks sucked so we listened to Elton John a lot. I fell in love with funeral for a friend and goodbye yellow brick road. I’m not prone to much nostalgia but those songs really bring back that era of being 16. A lot of really bad sht had happened in the i guess 4 yrs leading up to 16. Just really horrific sht for a kid to have to deal with, including debilitating OCD & some stuff I won’t mention bc I don’t want to be a downer. But at 16 I felt some freedom from that sht. I’d just gotten out of almost 2 yrs in a lock up for troubled teens with severe behavior problems, & 6 mos in a group home. I was home, I had great friends & sht felt hopeful. So a super impactful time of my life, and the songs on that Elton John soundtrack are part of the soundtrack of that time. That was also the year I discovered queen but queen makes me sad now bc my mom was an uber fan of queen and she passed away unexpectedly 1.5yrs ago and I still can’t hear queen without thinking of my mama.
I remember when my older sister got this album for Christmas. I eventually inherited it. Love Elton. To me his best songs are.... Harmony, Feel like a Bullet, Friends, Mad Man Across the Water, oh hell, he has a catalog that is amazing. Go down that rabbit hole. Believe me, you won't be disappointed.
Harmony; Levon; Friends; Love Song; Rocket Man. Every one of them were, and still are, such magnificent songs.

“With all due respect sir, but that’s exactly what we are doing now. So what’s the point wasting twenty-five years?” asked the Mexicans.
And the moral of this story is: Know where you’re going in life, you may already be there! Many times in life, money is not everything.

At one time Elton was the biggest Rocker along, with his partner and Lyricist Bernie Taupin.
Elton recorded this at Chateau d’Herauville in France.

put simply - it's realizing that the glitz and glamor he thought the life of a star would be is not nearly as wonderful as you would think.
"i'm not a present for your friends to open" is a hard-hitting line. I'm not some toy for you to play with and show off. I'm a person with true emotions, feelings, wants, likes and dislikes, stop parading me around.
The Yellow Brick Road represents the well- established path to a goal. Going beyond the Yellow Brick road means finding your own path, not what others expect of you.
Elton John was partying like crazy in the early 70s, and his lyricist Bernie Taupin retreated from the fast life and left London to move back to the country (farm). I believe he was warning Elton about his profligate ways.
This album made Elton John the biggest rock star in the world at that time!

The lyrics of this song become much more clear when you realize they are from the point of view of songwriter Bernie Taupin who doesn't care for the high life and the pressure of the superstardom of Elton's career.
This was written by Bernie Taupin to tell Elton that he didn't care for all the hum-drum and wanted to go back to his simple, humble beginnings.

Bernie was pretty much giving the "Middle Finger" to the music industry.
To begin to understand Elton John’s songs, it helps to understand Bernie Taupin…who wrote his lyrics.
I've been enjoying Elton John's music my entire life but I've never been able to discern more than 40% of the lyrics of most songs. So this was good to see the lyrics.
Everybody my age watched The Wizard of Oz every year. It was like a holiday. The yellow brick road represented gold it led to the Emerald (green) city (money) where the Wizard could make your wishes come true (but not really).
Coming into an age of teen rebellion when this song came out it's exactly what I was going through. "Should've listened to my old man". It's about life choices.
The incredible thing about this song, and others like it was that two talents were blended together to produce a masterpiece with Bernie Taupin writing the lyrics, and Elton creates the music..... the two were never in the same room together. Amazing.
All the really good EJ classics like this one, were written by Bernie Taupin. They had one of the best singer/songwriter partnerships ever!

When the opening lyrics appeared (When are you coming down. When are you going to land) first thing that came to mind was, Lex thinks it’s about drugs.
The workload that he (and Bernie and his 4 piece backing band) got through is amazing in the early 70's. Seven albums were released between 1971 and 1975, and one of the seven (this one) was a double! In between it all, they toured consistently. Nowadays you might wait 7 years for a band to release its NEXT album while Reg is working on the "difficult 34th album" (not including 4 collaboration albums, 5 live albums and 9 music soundtrack albums and more).
But how good was this music. This album alone starts with the 11 minute masterpiece Funeral For a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding, followed by Candle in the Wind, Benny and Jets and the title track Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. And they were all on the radio. Its just mind numbing how good we had it back then. ♥
The period between 1969 and 1975 Elton was near perfection musically. So many great songs. So many great albums. This was back in the day when you didn't have to wait 4 or 5 years for the next album. Elton put out 10 albums in 6 years a 8 of them were amazing. At least in my opinion. Peace.

I've always loved this song and sang it without really knowing it's meaning, because it actally didn't make any sense to me. And then i found out in an action film. There's a prision in Georgia where the prisioners are left in the facility by the fence by the Sherrif's bus and then are walked through a yellow brick road that leads to the building. When i found that out i immediatly listened to the song agains and then all the words fit. He is talking to a prision.
This song and Burn Down The Mission are my favorite songs of his.
I would say the word for the sound of this song is 'dreamy' for me. A song to sway to without thinking too much.
