Both seem on track to be great in March. Geno needs to make decisions on Ice and Jana though. And UConn has to be prepared to be great without Azzi. More often than not, she just isn't there when UConn needs her.

    • @RustyLou18

There ARE greater teams in the mix come March, without a doubt. UConn can forget post play, looks like Sarah will have to do it all which is a set up for losing. Just PB and SS in double digits only with less that 15 points from the bench is not going to "get it". WAY too many minutes for Sarah and Paige.

@ Dawn Staley said you often learn a lot more in loss than you do in wins. Like the majority of UCONN fans AND players who get blinded with stars in their eyes when Uconn is raining 3’s against mediocre teams and then struggle in big games. They’ve proven time and again they’re not as great as THEY think they are but instead show us exactly who WE thought they were. Now twice they’ve LOST to lower ranked teams and still ranked #4 while the team that just beat them drops to #7. Serious effery going on in here

@@wda2478 Not sure what you're talking about regarding rankings. The teams that beat UConn are currently ranked at #3 and #4. I think you haven't checked the most recent rankings. UConn has dropped to #7. While it's true that you learn more about your team in a loss than in a win(your weaknesses get exposed), quality generally means, "a degree of excellence." Your team doesn't exhibit, "a degree of excellence" when they lose.

@ On your point on excellence the Wizard of Westwood said it was never about winning and there were games they won when he thought they played terrible and games they lost he thought they played the best game of their lives. Andy Roddick served the best game of his life against Roger Federer and lost. Afterwards he said he threw everything AND the kitchen sink at him but still couldn’t beat him. “To the swift the race does not always belong” MJ scored 63 pts against Bird and lost. No one has ever scored that many pts in a playoff game. Sports is and always has been about how you SHOW UP!

USC, I'd say, is better set up. That's subject to change, of course. Uconn, traditionally, is a different team in March. Maybe they will be again.
I took the loss hard, but not too badly. It was a two point game and Uconn was knocking on the door. They shot 6 for 23 from downtown. If even one more of those fell, with everything else being the same, we'd have won. Of more concern is the front court. As in, we don't have one. It's time Geno recognized that and planned accordingly. I don't know if that looks like trying to ease Ice into the game in Big East play, or Jana. or going small all the time, but whatever. If we don't either not play them or we don't get some offense from them, we're going to lose come March.

  • @bennybenson5

UConn needs to fix its perimeter defense if it wants to be a serious team. It’s been a problem for a while now. Don’t know why it hasn’t been improved. USC almost doubled their season average in this game
Don’t know why Geno didn’t play El Alfy more than 6mins. Kiki only scored once against El Alfy but was eating against Ice Brady. I’m sorry but Ice in starting lineup experiment is over.
Geno also took KK out in the 4th quarter after getting UConn back in the game. Geno’s in game adjustments were why UConn lost to ND and USC. It was more apparent with USC. I wouldn’t even say he was out coached cuz he shot himself in the foot

UConn tried to get the younger players into scoring by playing Bueckers as assist leader for a while. That seemed to work. Then Bueckers joined the scoring with more offense, and the young players have been on and off since. Great one game and terrible the next isn't enough, and with Fudd out, the problem is more noticeable.
If UConn can flip the switch to "ON" for all their scorers, they will be a real force. Right now, there are about 3-4 players who aren't there yet.

From a Bruin perspective, I really wanted UConn to win this game. First because my second favorite team is always whoever is playing the Trojans. My hatred for Southern Cal goes back to my childhood. I figured UConn's home court advantage alone should have been enough to get a championship contending team over the top. Visitors rarely ever get a taste of home cooking. It's looking more and more like UConn is a two player team(Bueckers, Strong) with an average supporting cast. That's not going to be enough to challenge the Bruins down the road, and probably not South Carolina either.

I'm still more confident in UConn. Why? Because they ALWAYS get it together going into March. They also have a deeper team than USC. As Geno eluded to in the USC Post Game Presser...they need to figure out the roles of Ice & Jana. Right now in December, they are both inconsistent contributors, especially scoring which is the piece I believe Geno is searching for from them. One of them has to become a willing scoring option for the team. They can be wide open and pass up scoring opportunities. I'm not concerned about their guard play. They are deep in guard rotation and combos they can throw at teams. A healthy Azzi & Aubrey will completely change the complexion of the team both offensively and defensively. Aubrey's athleticism is needed against teams like USC, Tennessee, South Carolina. Big East play will help them refine the team as it always does.

They need to figure out who the most consistent big going to be. Both Ice & Jana have played well & bad at times. There is no performance separation between the two at the moment. One of them has to become a scoring threat. I’m just not going to come here and let people compare current UConn players to Amari DeBerry. That’s just asinine. There’s a reason Amari transferred and that’s because she’s not better than any other players on the roster.

So a sophomore who came off the bench last season and a freshman who just played her 12th game vs two experienced seniors, one of whom was voted the top power forward in the nation last year, are now being thrown to the wolves because of a 2 point loss. As one poster said, make your free throws. If they converted 1/2 of the misses, they win. If Cheli isn't blocked it's overtime. If a couople of rushed shots had been taken with an instant more time, they could have been made and UConn wins. Hopefuly in the Big East, Jana and Ice will get more playing time, Jana to continue to improve as a freshman (who of course is being called for fouls because ... the refs ... although this game it was Cheli beacuse Jana was on the bench) and Ice to get her back to how she played as Edwards injury replacement. Kara on SNY always talks about passing up a good look for a great look. But when the great looks aren't falling, then take the good look. Shade and Cheli should have taken more shots. And I agree with the commentors who questioned KK not on the floor in the 4th Q after what she did to get them back in the game.

(international players can be drafted at age 20). this rule serves NCAA women's basketball, only! in renegotiating the CBA, changing this rule should be a top priority - make it age 20 for domestic players! if they choose to leave college early, so be it, that should be their choice! as it is for the men. reality is there is only about five teams who can win this year, and uconn is not my top five. weak perimeter defense, lack of stable post player, 3pts disappeares in big games, inconsistent 3rd option on offense, very passive and etc...
pb is the same player from freshman year, mvp year, but i honestly think this year team is the worst team she had. she plays like more magic johnson than micheal jordan. she only gets better as good her teammates.

Paige bueckers best player in the country.......anyways, 2 conclusions i came to after watching this entire game was how hard girls baskeball can be to watch. the number of missed layups and tripping/falling is ridiculous. 2...lindsey gotlieb is awful. USC shoulda won this game by 12-15 points. Lindsey is in over her head. too much talent for her to know what to do with. This teams basketball IQ and discipline is so low, they turn the ball over at an alarming rate. 2nd game i watched of USC this year and i believe both games combined for damn near 40 plus turnovers. Either you're coaching it or allowing it. Juju shot selection is a little better than last year but she still takes some bad ones that are team killers. I would like to see them work the ball to Kiki more and not play the who ever got it shot game. Also lindsey needs to get juju moving more and setting screens for others. This will help the offense not be so dependent on juju isolations and being so predictable. Usc is the kind of team who has to worry about beating themselves bcuz of poor coaching. i will give lindsey credit for her team playing hard on defense.
all in all....back to back sports it will be ok buddy, understand that geno's reign might be over. His coaching and structure is a big reason why paige is usually so efficient, but his system and structure is also whats holding paige back.

You have some valid points but one of the main reasons USC won this game was that Ju JU WAS sharing the ball.

back to back sports was so but hurt uconn lost. NO MONEY ON IT NO HURT
how hard girls baskeball can be to watch. the number of missed layups and tripping/falling is ridiculous. 2. DONT WATCH THEN. EASY SOLUTION
lindsey gotlieb is awful. CRAZY - TOOK CAL TO FINAL 4, IN 3 YRS HAS TURNED AROUND USC
understand that geno's reign might be over. MAYBE THE GUY IS IN HIS 70s , TOOK HIS TEAM TO FINAL 4 LAST YEAR WHEN EVERYBODY SAID UCONN WAS TOAST/ SO MAYBE NOT
his system and structure is also whats holding paige back. MOVE AND PASS THE BALL AND TAKEN OPEN 3PTERS IF THEY ARE THERE. VERY OUTDATED. POOR PB ONLY HAS A USAGE RATE OF 33%. SHE NEEDS THE BALL MORE.
