I am a retired Lawyer, with no income, no pension money from government because I stay in a property I bought when I was working. This blocks me to qualify for Pension. I did not go for pension, I resigned because deployees treated me very badly for failure to join State Capture. So I have no income except rentals at the back of my property. I swear, government or no government, “ no person will stay in my property without paying.” I will sack them immediately. I am prepared to go to jail. I owe the Municipality R19000 because of these people. I don’t have money to pay anything including my funeral policy I was paying for years. Go on South African government , take me to jail. I don’t owe you anything. I supported you in 1976, now I am ignored and punished even if I am a pensioner. How can tenants be allowed to take over people’s properties. OVER MY DEAD BODY.

Your tenants are waking up everyday and working a significant chunk of their day to give you money, for doing nothing. They deal with crazy deadlines, bad employers or insufferable colleagues. They will also get *Nothing*** in return once the lease is over. And you are sitting back and watching the fruits of their labour come in. So gain some perspective on the position you have in society and stop writing out of touch complaints about it online.
Look, I understand that under capitalism some people see exploitation as the only way to survive. However complaining about being one of the lucky few who have this ability is far removed from what many tenants (which are most people) face.

Thought a written rental agreement is a standard thing. No place for legal misunderstanding.

A landlord has to pay the municipal bill, although they're not using the electricity? This is a great risk, as some people depend on the rent as a income. Not all landlords are rolling in the money and buy rental houses just for fun.

So the landlord must fit the bill for the lights, water and rates, lawyers fees and all damaged cost whilst the tenant squatters in your property? Everything is in favor for the tenant. Landlords must demand a years worth of rental

I got my deposit exactly as is 4 years later. It's either it was kept in the petty cash drawer or they did not give me my interest. Also, I'm no lawyer, but I've always known that a landlord forfeits his access to a property if he's got tenants in it.

@Deb Harris It was written and I was supposed to get interest, that is standard procedure here. They changed agents (got a cheaper one), they never inspected, the house was deteriorating. So one of those situations. In my previous stay at the same place (with the old agent) I made so much interest I thought there was a mistake when they payment came through. It can be quite substantial :)

I'm a landlord in north Carolina.
I have a written agreement. You must spell out and be executed According to the state landlord tenant law.
But the tenant cannot be doing illegal activity on the property or tearing up the property. It must be kept habital inside and outside. Take pictures of what's not being kept to contract.
Tenant cannot have more people in house other than whose on the contract. When first moved in.
All these things break a contract and you can evict them. Always put it in writing and have them sign for it.
