I'm from the UK and in the 80s drove from Houston to San Francisco. My memory of Texas was a lot different than what's there today. I visited the Confederate Air Force when it was based at Harlingen and remember Del Rio as being a pretty nice place. I recall going into a mall and ,because of my British accent ,the staff kept me talking for ages! Southern Texas was the best part of the trip. Even getting stopped for speeding ,in the middle of nowhere by the local sheriff turned out to be a long friendly conversation and a written warning! My abiding memory was the amount of pickup trucks with gun racks. I also recall a elderly gentleman with two Morris Minors on his driveway as i turned off the road to visit the Roy Bean Museum at Langtry. I stopped to take a photo and spent hours sitting on his porch as he told me his life story of being a mountain man in Montana,and he showed me some of his inventions. Never did get to the museum!

We have had governments obsessed with loading us with immigrants and currently have over 50,000 being housed in over 400 hotels.(including 4/5 star). A bit sad seeing these border towns today. When I was a boy in the 1960s my family would go to a Mexican border town from San Antonio for shopping and a nice Mexican meal for a weekend trip. Not a custom for many families today. Piedras Negras is my favorite border town today just across from Eagle Pass.
The Rio grande is dangerous. Many have died. People who cross are not coming to kill anyone. They are coming for a better life. We’ve got a lot of available jobs that pay very little. I welcome them.

I guess it was a remnant behavior due to WW2 but there were zero bad guys in 1951. We had a teenage neighbor across the street. One day he was watering the lawn and turned the sprinkler on the mail man who was not looking. I thought that was very mean but they both laughed. One Christmas my father bought me a bright red "Space Gun". It was a water gun and could shoot clear across the living room about 15 -20 feet. I loved that Space Gun. Another time my older sister went to take a bath and let out a blood curdling scream. I, of course, being a valiant first responder ran into the bathroom to see why she was screaming. She was staring at a giant tarantula on the tile wall above the tub ready to jump. My mother ran in with a broom and whacked it. The tarantula shriveled up, fell dead into the tub and my mother removed it. Years later we would call my mother The Giant Tarantula Killer. A movie was made about a giant tarantula soon after but not about my mother. You should watch it. Years later I would delude myself into thinking that teenage boy who was my neighbor was the great Kris Kristofferson who was born in Brownsville as I recall. My wife and I lived in Oklahoma where I went to college. We went to go see Kris in the film Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. After a few close ups my wife turned to me and said "That's the only man I would ever leave you for". I said "And I would approve" because I loved Kris too and he was from Brownsville. She was upset and said something about me not being willing to fight for her. And I said, "Hey, that's Kris Kristofferson from Brownsville, Texas. We are still married after 54 years. My apologies for this very long dissertation to you, the very pretty Rose Zamora of Brownsville, Texas. I hope that you too have fond memories of Brownsville to share one day. I am very happy the town is as pretty as I have been told. Abrazos!

I moved to Roma with my mom when I was 3. Then moved to McAllen at 5. Spent 27’years there. When I was a teen, we would go to Reynosa ALL the time for fun. Doesn’t seem like Iraq when I go now, so 🤷🏼♀️
I hadn’t been in around 20 years. The area has grown a lot, with nice, modern neighborhoods away from the border. Along the border, however, it looks pretty rough.
Been to Laredo. Crossing the bridge was a culture shock. Watching little kids beg for pennies. I bought an ecru crocheted dining tablecloth for $10. It easily was worth more in the US stores. The very young kids were working to support their families.
I have been thinking of a trip along the US/Mexico border (From New Zealand). One question is cell phone reception. I know that I-20/I-10 to El Paso you pick up Mexican cell reception for a lot of the last few hours. What is cell reception like right along the border? (Our provider does not have roaming available in Mexico like it does in the US). I ask as I use my phone as GPS.

Del Rio is more than you showed. I was there is June, '19. Funny incident. It was several dollars to drive into Mexico and decided the just walk across the bridge, 25 cent toll. American customs you had answer a lot questions, but on foot one just walked across the bridge, no questions asked. Until, I walked back and was stopped by Mexican authorities, who were very polite and friendly. On the Mexican side of the bridge one had to make sharp turns, stop and go, before entering Mexico. Not so on the American side. Few cars that Sunday afternoon going into Mexico but long lines entering the States. When I started crossing the bridge people were running up to cars to clean windshields and such, being chased off by border agents only to reappear when they left, chased off again, returned, etc. On the way back I saw Mexican nationals with many sombreros on their heads (large on the bottom and smaller toward the top, like a pyramid) and holding more headed into Mexico, apparently to sell to American tourists, which they had brought in Del Rio. Del Rio was hit hard when the nearby AF base was shut down in the '60s. Its never funny recovered. But I fell in love with that little town.
i remember in the 80’s when i was stationed in elpaso the rio grande would dry up in the summer , ppl would just walk over, it was crazy omg that bridge sceene looks nuts i was at william bueamont army med center for three years got married there too still married he was at ft bliss and guess what we live in northeast part of philadelphia. hubby worked for comcast 30years you would have been safer up near the army base

People in Mexico still swim and use the river. Not all of them are looking for crossing points. The river still gets packed on both sides of the border every time it’s Easter weekend. Americans aren’t allowed to swim, but Mexicans are, they know not to cross the line
I live in del Rio the check point is to check if you are smuggling drugs, people, guns, etc... the only part of Del Rio that is poor is downtown you need to go further in to the city its better

You missed Del Rio. The city is not on the border, it is about 7 miles inland.

Trump has expressed frustration over how long the process is taking and has reportedly ordered aides to “take the land.” The Washington Post cites a 2009 DHS Office of Inspector General report about border security and fence construction that notes both the high cost of this process, and the complexity-it involves “negotiating purchases and voluntary sales from more than 480 landowners.”
if the state paid land owners to construct a fence from state taxes, then maybe there will be some sort of fencing.
