A face his size as champion doesn't make for much excitement. He's had very few non smoke and mirrors high quality singles matches. Oh and he's injured a lot and his knees are fucked.
I mean, you could absolutely come up with a proper storyline for him as champion if you tried and gave a shit? Creative writing for professional wrestling really isn't hard if you care.
I can't believe people actually got mad that Orton lost. I saw comments saying "Orton carried that match!!" And I agree with Tom.. Orton being his "Methodical" self is the sole reason his matches with Kofi sucked. Kofi has done well with this reign for the most part. The only missteps have been bad match booking and Randy Orton. I was excited for their Summerslam match and now I just want Randy to go down to the midcard again and get told to not wrestle slower that an elderly tortoise. I hope that feud is over and Kofi can face someone like Andrade, Buddy Murphy, Drew McIntyre... just anyone that can give his reign a shot of adrenaline that it sorely needs after Orton. Have him lose to the Fiend at Survivor Series then lose it at TLC in a TLC match with Aleister Black, Drew McIntyre or even Roman Reigns if you've built him properly
