As a music teacher, I show West Side Story to my 7th graders each year, and explain why musicals have music and dance in them, when it completely defies reality. Music and dance are merely exclamation points in a musical drama. You never actually need an exclamation point. Exclamation points never change the grammar of a sentence, but they sure as hell change the ATMOSPHERE of a sentence, perhaps to drive home the message. All musicals are surreal - every one of them. My students always love West Side Story despite the surreality, and they're always devastated at the end. They agree that the impact wouldn't be there without the music and dance. I then immediately show them this sketch and we all laugh the hardest that we ever do all year. As soon as Norm says "What the hell was that?" the first time, we lose it. It reminds us how weird musicals are, even if we enjoy them.
Yes, so well said. We take it for granted that there will be musical numbers, regardless of how absurd it is for a specific character. This sketch is perfect for its ability to examine our unquestioned assumptions.
I taught choir and guitar for 6 years. West side story is my all time favorite musical since I was a kid. It was my “substitute” movie when I taught. How did I JUST TONIGHT find this sketch by totally accident? Has anyone else seen the Cher version where she does all the characters?
This was some of the best writing ever. Robert Downey Jr was still on and he wasn't that good when he was in the group. They actually choreographed this like a real West Side story. Best ever! This skit had me in stitches as well as in awe.
This was many years after he was a cast member. He was 20 when he was in the cast, in his early 30's here. He definitely wasn't the worst cast member during the run of the show, been watching since the late 70's. His & Michael Hall's sense of humor didn't mess with Dennis Miller's, etc. Just bad chemistry.
“What the Hell was *that* ?!” What a great 4th Wall break. I always wondered what happened during “the time” of a song in a musical. Time just “freezes”-always was strange during a musical.
I like how the sketch is a bunch of actors pretending to be flamboyant, Norm Macdonald pretending to not understand wth is going on and Chris Kattan playing the role he was born to play.
Can we agree that RDJ hits that first note like an assassin? Sometimes I come back and listen to that opening line "You're a Cobra, BOY." Obviously, by that point, I can't help but watch the entire thing multiple times. This is normal.

You sound like an awesome teacher
Musicals suck.
Well explained. Agreed.
Thanks for the laughs Norm. This is such a norm premise and his delivery makes it!
*RIP Norm!!* You were, and still are, adored by *ALL* your fans 💜💜💜
"While you were singing, I got stabbed in the head by a Puerto 🇵🇷 Rican!"
That is such a priceless line!!!
I haven't laughed that much for ages, brought me to tears and I also spat out my breakfast cereal
“What the Hell was *that* ?!”
What a great 4th Wall break. I always wondered what happened during “the time” of a song in a musical. Time just “freezes”-always was strange during a musical.
Yes, but sort of necessary in that context. In real life, we don't often say "This would be the PERFECT time to suddenly break into dance and song!"
its actually hilarious; knowing norms feud with kattan, and when he is the first one called on "oh no that's not good" hahahahahaha oh man i cant
The music and dancing is a perfect parody...Excellent work.
RIP Norm.
Norm is the best part of the skit.
David Landon He's the best part of anything he's in.
"Uhhh ohhh thats not good..."
SMOFO CHUY you’re damn right, you fucker!
Took the word right out of my typing
Just gives up and walks away at the end of the sketch.
“Oh no. That’s not good.” still makes me laugh after about a dozen views. 😂
One of my favorite sketches ever.
Same here. I was shocked to see it come up.
I like how the sketch is a bunch of actors pretending to be flamboyant, Norm Macdonald pretending to not understand wth is going on and Chris Kattan playing the role he was born to play.
Norm is the narrator from Greek drama.
What's killing me is Collin Quinn saying "We're being cobras. Tsssssss...."
So adorable!
Iron mans first fight with black panther
Braxton Bobo * _MEEeeeoooowww_ ~
LOL
Adam Haywood
r/whoosh
Maybe?
I don’t get it.....cuz he’s black? Lol
@@drquack1217 well yeah but he's also a panther
24,000 views!? For one of the best sketches of all time?
What was a better one?
@@docgima SNL doesn't do SKITS, people. They're SKETCHES. Your little sister does SKITS for your mom and dad's friends...
I love Sheri Oteri! She was terrific. Always makes me laugh.
Yeah and even the fact that she looks so diminutive next to the rest of the guys cracks me up
Norm always has a smile on his face and looks like he is about to laugh every time he says a line just go back and watch all his sketches.
My God. The pure skill and singing by these guys was amazing. Best SNL skit of all time for me.
Still one of the best SNL skits ever. Classic
One of the greatest Norm Snl skits ever!🤣🤣
HAHAHA didn't expect RDJ, first one to jump up and wow us with a beautiful Cobra singing voice.
Can we agree that RDJ hits that first note like an assassin? Sometimes I come back and listen to that opening line "You're a Cobra, BOY." Obviously, by that point, I can't help but watch the entire thing multiple times. This is normal.
This is my all time favorite SNL skit. I’m just dying every time I watch it.
