I have a theory that Quaid was already in Recall this whole time, as his dream at the very start of the film may have been the beginning process of him starting his virtual reality fantasy. But the part of the fantasy that we don't know is that it's a little meta. Basically, Quaid is playing himself who goes to the virtual's world of Recall, where the action begins.
