Still funny after all these years. I had that 45. And I still can say the entire routine along with the recording, which kinda surprised me. I don't remember stuff so good these days. Thanx so much for sharing! To the geniuses who thought this up, thanx so very very much, for the magic, music, and memories.
My sister had this recording and when I was a kid I used to play this plenty of times. this brings back great memories I had with my sister way back then. This is a great and funny recording as well as a lot of fun to hear. Boy what memories this brings back.
My wife and I first heard this great song because our baby daughter for some reason really likes "oldies". As my wife puts it, "the first mash-up!" Copyright laws did exist, but the courts determined this was a parody and an entirely new work. While silly sounding, this record introduced some brand new recording techniques. Amazing and ground-breaking!
Forgive me for asking, but do you read the comments but not actually play the videos under which they are posted? Because this would both explain your question and indicate you are perhaps not really getting the most out of TH-cam. I am commenting about the song "The Flying Saucer" by Buchanan and Goodman. I am sure the other songs on the album are funny but they are unfortunately not on the video to which I posted a comment. As a side note, consider getting some headphones or speakers and play the videos by clicking on the triangle "play" icon at the bottom. It will seriously blow your mind!
I've had 6 copies of this COMEDY RECORD for about 35 years!! I don't NEED to listen to it! I even have a copy of when it was titled, "Back To Earth"! I've heard it HUNDREDS of times. I have at least 600 of these in my collection, probably more than anyone else in the world, including the 4 that I made! I've been collecting break-ins ever since 1969. I helped Dickie Goodman's son, Jon, write a book about his dad! I KNOW the difference between a break-in (comedy record) and a song. The point is, this is NOT a song! It is a COMEDY record! If this is a song, I want you to hum or whistle every single second of it! Is, "Santa Claus & His Old Lady", a song? Is, "Sister Mary Elephant", a song? Is, "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television", a song?
Ha ha ha ha! That's too funny. So it's really not important to you that we enjoyed this video, I rediscovered something I vaguely recall from my childhood (and my wife has never heard before). What you mean is that this "track" (as we called it back in the day, and is still called) is not a song. It appears you are incorrect as "Flying Saucer" is indeed commonly identified as a "song" in many different areas, which seems sensible to a normal person (although perhaps not to you). I don't mean to criticise, but if you are the self-appointed Internet Ambassador of Buchanan and Goodman's work, don't you think there's a better way to welcome and encourage appreciation of their work, other than being an insufferable pedant? I mean, some of what you actually say is vaguely interesting, like how you worked with Dickie's son, and I am impressed at how many times you listened to the record (etc.). Even if you disagree that this song is not a song in the conventional sense, you went about making your point in a frankly confusing and pedantic way. It's unclear what you get out of being petty here. Unless you don't want other people to listen to this, keeping this all to yourself? That's not how this works, you know! (I, on the other hand, enjoy putting people like you in their place, so my motivation is clear. But if you actually learn something about how to behave better in the future, well, that makes it all worthwhile.)
What could someone enjoying listening to it POSSIBLY have to do with it not being a song?? A TRACK is the term used for one single recording on an album of a number of such recordings! Back in "the day", back in the old days, and, still, in the present world, it was and still is called, a RECORD! No, it appears that YOU are incorrect! Just like when people are talking about a number of records and they say, ":vinyls", instead of "vinyl". You are simply wrong! You ARE correct in saying it is COMMONLY called a song, and by that, I mean very COMMON people, those with a lack of intelligence, use the term, ":song", for anything on a record! Just because a number of you are wrong, doesn't mean that what you say goes! What I said has nothing to do with welcoming anybody to the world of Buchanan & Goodman, I'm ONLY trying to make a single point: a break-in record is NOT a song!!!! If my point was confusing, it's because you just don't understand the use of plain English! Anyone with a brain and a working command of the English language would've had no trouble understanding what I said. Obviously, it was confusing to you, you made a number accusations that had NOTHING to do with anything I said! I get nothing from having said anything here other than the POSSIBLE satisfaction of knowing that it was made clear to SOMEONE that Flying Saucer and the hundreds of other records of that ilk are NOT songs!! What do you get out of trying to claim they ARE songs?Anything I've said here has NOTHING to do with anybody listening to this record!! If anything, it'll CAUSE them to listen to it to find out that it is NOT a song!! The only thing you've accomplished putting in its place is the dunce cap that you MUST have firmly attached to the top of your head!! Otherwise, NO, you're motivation is NOT clear!! `Tis YOU that needs to learn how to play nicely with the other children!! Someday, that'll allow you to set foot into adult world with the rest of us!
The character "John Cameron Cameron" was a take-off of John Cameron Swayze, who anchored NBC television's evening newscast at the time this record was recorded. But not long after it was released, Swayze was removed from the anchor desk and replaced by the team of Chet Huntley and David Brinkley.
I was stationed in Germany 1961/1962 when I first heard this song. Not long after this song was played on the American Forces Network (later changed to Armed Forces Radio and Television Stations/AFRTS) someone at the base did an interview with Elvis Presley using this format. They did it on a tape recorder. I only heard it once and it was great. I doubt it was ever made into a record.
I just bought a book on One Hit Wonders and this song was the first of the 28 songs featured in it. I'd never even heard of it before. Listening to it now, it's a LOT of fun!
my biofather was a DJ for classic car shows when I was a kid, so much of my first 12 years of life were spent listening to Oldies music, but this was always my favorite because it was one of the first mashups of music, and the whole alien invasion thing.
honestly this just reminds me of the annoying commercials i hear the radio stations play, where they do an ad for their own station and play a bunch of really short clips of great songs then the commercial ends and they immediately play a song that sucks and now you are just left hanging with all these great songs in your head that you didnt get to actually hear and its just some crap playing.
So...basically this is "Dr. Demento" style humour but decades earlier. I love it. XD Some of the usages of the song clips are so funny. "Sir, what would you do if the aliens landed right in front of you?" "JUMPBACKINTHEALLEY!" "Thank you sir."
Dickie Goodman was a maniac!!! Check out his career, and the tragic way he died on wikipedia. Shame really. These types of records were popular for years. Now they seem cheesy, but bring back the good memories as everyone says. 2 funny albums I had that were similar in using music and live responses from famous people with made up questions were "Welcome to the LBJ Ranch" and "Everything you ever wanted to know about the Godfather, but don't ask". Sure they are out on ebay or somewhere....if anyone sees them, and gets the chance to listen, you won't be disappointed.
+taxisteve929 I'll have to dig up the godfather album! I have 5 or 6 other such albums. Most of them are by Alen Robin. I collect break-ins and have at least 600, by now. Even one that was done years BEFORE Flying Saucer!

I have a vague memory of a similar novelty recording where different songs were injected like this. Seems it was about a presidential election. Anyone else remember that?
Indeed they did and Goodman was sued up to his eyeballs. I recall he came out ok in the end as he did many more of these "sound clip" type novelty spoofs during the 50s and 60's
I seem to have heard (and possibly it came from these lawsuits mention, that a certain number of seconds of a song can be played w/o copyright infringement. Maybe 5 or so? Think of the compilation infomercials that use only seconds of each song.
I thought this hilarious when I was like 11 years old, it was one of my aunts or uncles records. About 50 years later it’s notquite as funny as I remembered. Kinda like those Marx brothers movies.
My dad shared this with me as a kid. I'm so glad he did. It'll always be a silly/happy memory I have.
