For this video I've condensed the levels a little bit to help showcase the variety of level design, the set-pieces, the unique power-ups and the boss battles. It's still in development, but it's already a very polished expereince and has lots of fun ideas. Hope you enjoy!
Mario losing his hat, then quickly reaching to grab it as he is entering a pipe is a great detail. it's that little bit extra that really fleshes out this game.

I love how this is a blend of old and new Mario: the 3d level screen is reminiscent of 3D world, the graphics are retro, the star throwing gives of oddysey vibes, and the movement is straight out of SM64 at times (you'll notice this when Mario sometimes performs a dive). People can joke, buy Nintendo WILL be getting this removed from the universe quite soon - literally nothing they have ever done would indicate anything else.
Anyone doing these is just asking for trouble anymore, and it's such a sad state. Nintendo, while they have to indeed protect their IP, wields a much too heavy hammer when they actually do so. If this were a Sonic game? Sega would probably ask for resumes.
Mmhh yes, *only* Nintendo *has* to "defend" their IP, while Sega let's people do whatever they want with Sonic, yet they still own the rights and all despite everything
Graphics look unbelievably, absurdly good, but does a Mario game really need that much yapping? This thing has as many "cutscenes" as Metal Gear Solid...
It's inspired by the Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi game so there is a big focus on story. I really like the idea of a narrative-driven Mario platformer (and it's got some great gags), but all the cutscenes are skippable anyway and most of the cutscenes are restriced to the intro, the outro and the Yoshi Village area. The actual levels are mostly all gameplay.
You got me when you said Mario battles a giant squid. I highly approve. The last time Mario fought a giant squid was in Super Mario RPG, which I also very much liked. More games should have giant squids and giant octopuses for bosses, especially Nintendo fan games. Squid-fanaticism aside, I'm really impressed with how much gameplay features and details the developer put into this fan game. It's got elements of Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario, and the Wii Super Mario games. It even has a little bit of the Donkey Kong Country games as well. The wall-jumping and health meter are also welcome additions. I especially like the boss fights and their designs. I got to hand it to inspired fan developers who are able to develop the fan games they want to play, and be able to do them so well. I have to check this demo out for myself. Good going, Alpha Beta Gamer, for all the interesting games you've introduced us to with your playthroughs.
