I just have to comment! Can't hold it any longer. I have listened to both this tune Red Wing and also Panama by this band on utube. For what it is worth, in my opinion ,this is very very good N.O. Music. I would love to play a few tune with this exact same band . Dream on .
This rivals Red Wing by "George Lewis and His Rhythm Boys" , but I actually like Sammy 's version with the Ginger Pig Band better on this one although you can hear George Lewis' influence. This thing really SWINGS !!! Red Wing was written in 1907 by Kerry Mills with lyrics by Thurland Chattaway. It was based on the music from the verse from Robert Schumann's piano composition "The Happy Farmer Returning From Work" from his 1848 Album for the Young, Opus. 68. Schumann would be tapping his toe for sure if he heard this.
Yes, indeed a fine version of this tune - and it really swings - Sammy and all in great form - yes the George Lewis influence is very evident - superb!
Pete Dyer: Fantastic trombone player !!!!

Sammy is the last of the greats and saw him years ago with the Colyer band

Great music from a great band. 'Nuff said.
In my view, Sammy on clarinet is chaneling a bit of George Louuis of New Orleans!! Long may it be so!!
Sammy is the last of the great British clarinetists and long may he blow the N O sound
