  • It's not often that one of the great minds behind Wizards of the Coast asks you if you would like to be one of the first to play their brand new D&D boardgame. And when they do - you say yes!
This is exactly what happened whilst at D&D in a Castle - I got the opportunity to play the new Warriors of Krynn boardgame and let me tell you that it exceeded my expectations. Take a look and find out why!

Oh, I would absolutely love more reviews of similar products, particularly those that can be used both in and out of campaigns. I know that this game comes with, I believe, 12 scenarios that match specific moments in the campaign. Does anyone know yet if there are instructions for creating new scenarios? That would certainly increase my interest in acquiring this game.

@@taccntb4345 I was still young when that released, but it has always been a bit clunky. Sometimes, it could even be immersion breaking, and using it required a great deal of prep from the DM. That's why I created my own system. From what I have seen so far, this seems more streamlined, and more versatile. If it is also customizable, with a system for designing scenarios, it has the potential to be a better option. If not, I probably won't spend money for it.

Our Dragonlance campaign group just played our first battle in the board game and it was sooo much fun! We still role played our characters and there were key moments of the board game that were very cinematic moments for our rpg game. I’m sure it’s not for everyone but, wow, did we have fun playing it during our session night.

    • @AbelMcTalisker
      @AbelMcTalisker ปีที่แล้ว

A number of the original Dragonlance modules were the same. You could play as individual PCs or, in addition, play through a series of wargame scenarios using the old D&D Battlesystem with some of the PCs in command. Seems like they are trying to recreate that with this game. I wonder if they intend to release some supplements for this to cover big Dragonlance battles like the High Clerist Tower or the underwater battle in Istar. Perhaps even the big, final battle at Neraka.

I've been cautiously optimistic about the Dragonlance campaign and this board game after Wizards' recent flops. I loved the books growing up and badly want it to be their best 5e campaign book yet. Seeing Margaret Weis publicly call them out when they post glaring mistakes made it hard to be excited, but hearing that this board game is actually an enjoyable experience and not just some gimmick by Hasbro to overproduce like their other IP(s) has boosted my confidence again! Thanks for the review!

'Just a gimmick from Hasbro?!?' I have to rebut that, just bought DND - adventure begins for my nephews 10th birthday to play last night. And mate was it a blast, what a cool entry level for people curious to try dnd but want to ease into it. I tried playing Dnd with some younger high-school mates but I'm afraid I made fun of it, and just thought do anything crazy as one could imagine as I had no idea how to play but the board game simplified it for a bit of an imbecile like me, I'd like to give dnd a second try now thanks to that board game.

I am seeing a lot of comments about the cost. Shop around. You can find this for a good price on many online stores. I picked up a Deluxe Preorder for $123 AUD which converts to $85 USD. This was from my usual online store who I order my 40K and stuff through, so you do not even have to look too hard.
    For those in Australia -
The Combat Company $123.95 + $10 postage or FREE post over $150.
    Gap Games $159.95 +$10 postage.
Both are reliable and solid after-sales service. I have used them for many years.

I love a good board game. Based on what is presented here, Warriors of the Krynn strikes me as a D&D themed novelty item trying to be a board game rather than being a well-made dedicated board game.
If anyone wants to try a really well-made D&D-style board game, try Gloomhaven if you haven't already played it. It's huge, it's challenging, it's complex, yes it's it's expensive and takes a long time to play, but it's also a unique and wild experience. If the board game is out of your price range, there is a digital version.

I think that is a hugely valid question. I was speaking to a 'collector' of D&D stuff and they're going to get it, although did smart at the price. Personally, I wouldn't get it, as I'm not a collector, and am too much of a rules-creator as a DM. I'd value the boardgame at maybe $50 - $60, the book at $40-50, and the DMs screen at $20. Does that hold up? Well yes because you get the D&D Beyond inclusion which is another $30+. Having said that, unless you really plan on running a lot of Dragonlance is it worth it?

    • @HowtobeaGreatGM

Yes and no. I only roleplay boardgames when I play, I can't help it. But there is still a very different mindset - you are much more constrained in what you can and cannot do in a boardgame right? You can't wander off the board for example.

@@HowtobeaGreatGM right and there's always what you can and can't do in RPGs as well. Anything outside of that is basically playing pretend.
One could simply lay out the mass combat subsystem as a board game and strictly interact with it as such. But I feel as a dm you could make sure to encourage the players to keep the tone of imagination and colouring in the empty spaces the game doesn't talk about.
Id liken it to taking the attack action. As a player I could just say I attack and roll a d20. Much like in a board game. But we add flavor and spice with narration and suddenly the mechanics come to life.
I'm not sure how hard it is with this game but I know I can do that with most games. Even checkers if you give me enough time ;)
Anywho. That's about my whole point :)

Just picked this up from Ollie’s on sale.. I love DnD but don’t often get to assemble a party.. but my niece and her boyfriend and my nephew are interested in learning, and I’ve never DMed before so I’m hoping this is a good introduction into DnD for them! (Especially my nephew as he’s only 10).
Will continue watching the video but glad I found your channel!

Sounds like a decent game. What holds me back is the quality and look of the components. I think so much more could have been done. I don't like the little rectangular army blocks, the cardboard is flimsy, the miniatures very poorly painted (washed) and the whole game looks cheap, when compared to other boardgames in the same price range. Disappointing, could have been great...

I watched a review and walkthrough of the rules for this game and the book. It isnt needed and tbh it looks like it would break immersion quickly. It isnt neccessary to the game at all and to be honest it doesnt look like it's worth the extra 100 bucks you'll spend for the deluxe edition. I'll pass and just grab the book.

Extra $100? I got my Deluxe preorder for $123 Australian, which is $85 USD. So I do not know where you are getting $100 extra when I did not even pay $100 for book and board game and bonus DM screen.

OK. It's the end of 2023. It's been a year since this boardgame was released. Did you play the boardgame more than twice? I never found anyone playing this game. Not even on TH-cam. Even in actual plays, I never found one where they cut to the boardgame instead of bypassing it and moving forward in the plotline.

I'm a HUGE fan of D&D, but I have to admit, if they offered a playtest of ANY of their recent products, I'd decline. I don't want to anywhere close to anything those woke "sensitivity writers" have even been in proximity of.
They went from AAA, to ultra garbage. I guess that why I've seen a zillion of their board game at Ollies.

All this is doing is codifying larger scale battle with a different set of rules. Uh... Like ship to ship battles. I argued in your 'spelljammer is crap 👎' video (not the best first impression of your channel imo) that you missed the point of that products intent (I don't think that was written for you and your tastes either (you seem to need more crunch and/or vermicilitude.) You needed more content from an into scenario book+nostalgia monster book+intro adventure..., I.e., you wanted less of an intro intro. This was all n to a starter box imo. Which just based on the advertised page counts alone screamed "light weight intro" and I adjusted my perceptions immediately, sono got to enjoy the content sans but hurt. I also paid starter box prices for my copies.) But I really digressed there, what I said what I thought you wanted was a change of scale from the focus of d&d out of the box. Spelljammer needs a boardgame approach to ship battles to give you what you want. A change in scale benefits like that being done differently (at times) and not forced (e.g., opposed to slapping on additional actions to simulate and farce of an action economy... But strive for a quantum rules shift to make this larger scale interactions more entertaining and engaging.) It will be interesting to see how FORCED using your player as a player/general is in the dragonlance boardgame. This tickles my fancy though. Harkens back to the old DL 11 module that was more of a wargame than a RPG and really put you into that space.

I am hopeful that there will be a way to either use the scenarios or make custom ones that will work in campaigns outside Shadow of the Dragon Queen.
