Can we handle Europe's most dramatic anchorage? Sailing Skye | Ep 14

- Sailing our own boat to Skye has been a dream for both of us for a while now - in this week's episode we finally make it happen. We anchor in Loch Scavaig, known as Europe's most beautiful and most dramatic anchorage - it certainly delivered on both fronts. We hiked from the boat up to the top of Sgurr Na Stri, a 500m tall mountain with views over the entire Black Cuillin ridge, the Small Isles and of Delfino anchored below us. After a blustery and scary night it was time to leave and head for Canna, breaking up our journey to the Outer Hebrides. And we had some more attempts at picking up a mooring ball when we arrived that, as usual, didn't go quite to plan.

Great video Laura & Stu. Like you we had a love/hate relationship with mooring buoys! One sure thing about sailing is that you never stop learning. You have done so well in such a short time. Keep going guys and look forward to following your adventures.

Lovely video and amazing views! You will learn with practice, that's half the fun!! Worth putting a second line through the loop on the main mooring buoy as you never know how good the lines are, that way you will have some back up if it parts ⛵

Wow really well done I binged watched all your videos this weekend and I’m ready for more. I plan to retire in 14 months (hey but who’s counting) and want to buy a Swedish 🇸🇪 boat HR 36 would be perfect but now intrigued by your boat. I like the idea of spending a few summers learning to sail in Sweden or Northern Europe. Spent too many years in way to hot Miami and can’t wait to get out. Keep them coming please.
Thanks for the lovely comments! Glad you're enjoying the videos :) I think Sweden has a cruisers visa which would make it easier. The seasons are short up here so you really have to be ready to go at the start of the season.

Great video. I would love to sail up to Skye soon. On picking up mooring buoys, I would suggest approaching from directly downwind and when you get the pick up buoy get a loop of the strop over your cleat first. Don't worry about the bow roller etc. Let the boat settle and then sort out the details. And try not to go between the mooring buoy ans pick up buoy!

Great vlog 🎉 thanks! Being a single handed sailor most of the time, I normally pick up the buoy line from the stern and temporarily attach it to the cleat, when the vessel is still and not under power......I just walk the line forward and attach it to the bow cleat, the vessel is in neutral as I approach, I have never had the line mess with the prop though this method,
Great to hear that you've enjoyed the videos! We've heard this idea about picking up mooring balls from reverse a couple of times over the last few videos. We might give it a go, although we've found Delfino can be a bit skittish in reverse. Might be quite situation dependent!

Hiya, no need to (reverse) go astern, just come along side the buoy, wait for it to come to the stern, then cleat it on the stern cleat, when the yacht stops, unhook and walk it forward to the bow, happy week 😀
There are few places on earth as amazing as the west coast of Scotland! They are also some of the best charted waters... in places. Have a look at Antares charts, fantastically detailed, accurate charts which will give you the confidence to enter amazing places you might not have dared to otherwise.
Yeah we used the Antares charts throughout our trip. They were a great resource. We're thinking we'll do an episode talking about what we used to plan whilst in Scotland and the choices we made to prepare.

Been in that anchorage a few times good mud in there but you have to get it against weed
In the end I think we held really well. We didn't drag an inch and the new anchor did an amazing job.

It looks like an amazing trip you have done, how long were you away for?
We spent about 3 and a half months from leaving Chichester, cruising Scotland, and arriving in Plymouth for boatwork. It was a great time, but next season we will likely cruise a bit slower and be a bit more intentional with our filming. On that note, if you've got any segments you enjoy (or any segments you don't enjoy!) let me know - it's the only way we can improve :)

@@DelfinoDiscoversThanks for getting back to me, it’s been great to follow as it’s a trip I have been wanting to do for a while now, so these videos have helped with the planning! What time of the year did you leave Chichester?
No problem, glad to help! iirc we slipped the lines from Chichester at the middle of June and departed from Falmouth at the end of June.
If I were to go back and do it again I'd make a few changes:
1. Leave earlier and accept that also probably means working our way up the Irish sea in a few hops.
2. Avoid going into the Firth of Clyde. For us at least, the crinnan lacked enough water to transit so it ended up being a bit of a detour and in my opinion the cruising further north was the best.
3. We left with boatwork still to complete, which was a pain the backside to do beyond the Clyde.
4. Leave much longer for the passages up and down the Irish sea, so that we could break it up and choose better weather windows.
