Thank you so much for this video. I've been trying to find videos that show how to actually use this type of greenhouse. Most just show how to set it up.
Well done I can't wait to get started , thanks for your info , been wanting to do this for awhile and move some of my seedlings starting inside from house window
I have one just like yours. I got some shade cloth and using plastic cover as a pattern i made another cover. Helps regulate heat and cold. Even though mines in a semi protected area it has blown over until ...... I put boards outside on the flaps then used cement blocks on top of those. Additionally i crisscrossed over the top with heavy paracord tying it to outside loops then a cement block. I strung cord through pool noodles making sure they buffer contact with the greenhouse . Works like a charm! Before that i was needing to replace broken connections. (Son has a 3D printer)
I got a smaller one that I plan to place on my deck, and secure it to my deck, because it does get very windy around spring. I'm also going to try my hand at winter sowing, using empty gallon milk jugs and half gallon juice bottles.
Great review on the unheated greenhouse. So I had one half the size of yours and loved it. I've used it 3 years now but I've ordered a bigger one and just need to put it together. I would suggest if you love starting seeds to get one. Thanks for a lovely video. Happy gardening!! Jerris
I live in an urban area so size is something of consideration, but the one you have is of perfect size. This video has definitely convinced me to take this drive to county at my tractor supply store and pick one up today! 👍🏾
We got a bigger one for our backyard- it's 12 feet long by 7 feet high...almost 7 feet. We buried the bottom of the frame 7 inches into the ground and covered it with sand, so it's actually an inch under 6 and a half feet high. We live near the Chesapeake Bay and it gets very windy here, especially in hurricane season. We did add the stakes to tie it off as an extra measure of protection against having it blow away Wizard of Oz style...haha! I added black mulch to the ground in there hoping it will store a little bit of warmth from the sun. It still gets cold out there and I do worry about my Dragon's Breath plants and other Celosias. I can't bring them inside because one of our cats will eat anything I bring in. I love him dearly, but that kind of sucks...haha! I have them off the ground and bubble wrapped their pots, so here's hoping! 2023 has been my firt year gardening, so this is my first winter with a greenhouse and caring for plants. Everything is an experiment at this point. I was in zone 8a but it just got changed to 8b according to the Hardiness Zone map update, so our winters are supposed to be more mild going forward. Did your zone go to 7b?
@kooltube100 It's almost been a year and the only thing to go is the pull tabs on the zippers for the front flap. We've had some windy days and it's held up really well so far! Haven't noticed any degradation of the plastic.
@@amandasshadow9605 ah yes I've heard the zips are terrible on these things. I was thinking of just using velcro strips to replace it, if the zipper goes. thankyou! definatly gonna try burying it
My husband got me one as a surprise gift. ❤ I was planning on making a gold fish pond, so I started it and used the dirt to make a level pad. I just dug back my pad even on all sides and pushed it back onto the plastic. I didn't bury the poles, but I did add hook stakes and sand ballast attached to corners. I live in tornado valley. Hope it holds. I just finished it, and we had high winds today. My husband said it was the only thing in the yard that didn't move. He said you couldn't even tell it was windy by looking at it. I had the door closed but windows open. I wonder how it will do with the windows closed.
I’m in Northern California zone 9b. I have a fairly large unheated greenhouse. I started tomato seeds indoors and now I’ve put the seedlings in the green house. So far they’re doing ok. But, we’ve been having a mild winter so far. Not much frost so I’m hoping that continues. I’ve also overwintering 2 cherry tomato plants. Still alive 👍.
Thanks for the overview. I have two of the smaller types of these and have not been very good about testing to see what they can really do. Your video gives me some ideas!
Zone 6 here and I start certain seeds at the end of Jan/early Feb. I put a 2 cu ft bag of potting soil on the bottom rack to keep this type of greenhouse from toppling over. Bonus, the heated bag of potting soil will help maintain some warmth.
You can always throw a small aquarium heater in that tub with the fish and it will keep the water warm on cold nights to radiate back into the greenhouse
Thank you for a great explanation of these greenhouses. I bought a smaller one, am in zone 7, and now I know how I should consider using it. I do need to check on securing it better. Right now, it's weighted down with heavy pots on the lowest shelf waiting to be able to bring seedlings outside in a couple of weeks.
Great vid 👍🏼. Still a newbie & Im kinda late in seed starting! starting them indoors then repot in those Solo cups. have them hang in my repurposed mini greenhouse til ready. Im using our old metal tall bathroom shelf(you know, the one you could place around your toilet, has 4shelves) lol & covering with plastic clamped on! Hopefully will do ok & dont blow away! Zone7 too NJ😅🤞🏼
I used my sewing machine and made a cover to fir from frost cloth. It helps with time I can use it. I put it under the plastic and raise it up past windows on warm days. Remove it for summer.
I bought my first house 2 almost 2 years ago and it came with a fairly big walk in greenhouse. Ive named it the death room because it has killed 99% of the plants ive put in there (so far, 1 survivor). This year will be round 3 with the greenhouse, hopefully i can have something else survive.
I had a small one with 3 shelves and decided to buy another one with 4 shelves ready for expanding planting this year - I cleaned all my spare pots and housed them inside them both for the winter - unfortunately we had very heavy winds in UK November time and the bigger one went on a nice blowy journey around my garden displacing the pots everywhere 🥴 and the bottom legs were damaged so I now have 2 with 3 shelves 🙄
i just bought one like this was just wondering how fast the seeds come up?? I am only wanting it for flower seeds...was wondering why you have lids on the trays isn't that what the greenhouse is for???
Very imformative, thank you. I was wondering if my cool season would work well in here. I did start my tomatoes and peppers in my amazon green house, but i am in zone 10 along tje coast so its a little different.
We have this exact greenhouse and love it. We weigh the bottom bars/struts down with big flat flagstones that weigh about 50lbs each. Flats of seedlings sit on the stones too. Also, we are trying to grow the hot weather crop seedlings in there right now and the cool weather stuff on the patio table. Why? Well, we usually get a ton of volunteer plants of tomatoes and peppers and whatnot right in the raised beds and when you would think its still too cold. I think the tempersture fluctuations may actually help them and make for a stronger plant. So, here we are just putting everything that needs a jolt of heat here and there in the greenhouse and starting the brassicas and chards and sweetpeas right out in the open on the patio table.
It really depends how cold your nights are getting, if it’s only an occasional night and barely near 32F you might be okay, but hard freezes will probably still hurt your seedlings. Peppers and squash tend to get stunned by even temps in the 40’s but tomatoes in my experience are a little more forgiving! Hope this helps - let me know if you have any other questions!!
Hello! So I live in Minnesota in the woods near a wetland… when full sun is out and I open to vent the amount of bugs that come in is excessive. Do you have any advice on that?
Oh that is no fun! I wish I had better advice in my experience there would be some bugs but they would usually fly out in the evening. I don’t know if you keep the windows on it open too but I would probably focus on as much air flow as possible.
I've bought the next size up from the one you have, today. I built it, but I need to level the corner of the garden I'm thinking of keeping it. I was thinking about adding a couple of raised beds to strengthen as well as either gravel or a few paving slabs. Do you think that this would help keep it from blowing over?
For myself, I use gallon sized water jugs for winter sowing which does great as long as they get rain or snow to keep the soil from fully drying out. I have 2 small green houses like yours but half the size. I haven't used either one yet. I may go ahead and set one up to move my seedlings into for more light they are currently taking all of my bathroom counter space with a total of 3 lights in them all day. My last projected frost date is Mother's day every year.
Temps will get down to low 40’s tonight. I have thick heavy plastic totes over my seedlings. “Mini greenhouse” if you will. Can I leave them out tonight? (Tomato seedlings mostly) Or is it too cold out tonight?
If it isn’t getting down to 32 they will probably survive. It’s not great but usually with themps in the 40’s mine do okay. It’s really good you covered them that will help!
I was curious as to what zone you are in I am in Florida zone 9a. That would be for reference as I watch your videos. I know a lot of colder climate states up north do winter sowing. Do you think that is something that we can do instead of a greenhouse even though we don’t get snow.
I think it will depend a bit on what you are planting! In your area I would bet you can direct sow a lot of things and wouldn’t even have to winter sow :)
@@TheRecklessGarden well that is good to know. I will have to experiment next year I guess only I will be able to know that answer thank you so much you’re so kind. I would be growing cool crop vegetables such as lettuce spinach beets radish
@@doowopshopgal those all sound like great options! There are also flowers like bells of Ireland and bachelor buttons that you can plant in the winter even here but they might really get going for you in your zone!
I think you will be able to grow the cool veggies in zone 9 without a greenhouse for most of the season. I can grow most of them in zone 8 without issue. The only thing I can’t keep alive is peas and lettuce if we get a serious frost. I would check your farmers almanac planting dates bc it would give you some ideas as well
Thank you so much for this video. I've been trying to find videos that show how to actually use this type of greenhouse. Most just show how to set it up.

This is unbelievably helpful! Thank you soooo much. I just got one of these and wasn’t sure where to start. Thank you!!!!

A wealth of information.. Thank you! Your garden is very cute.
Oh thank you so much!!
What you've created with the water and gravel base is called a heat sink. Very cool.
Hi I brought mine in February this year and I find its great. I lined mine inside with bubble wrap
Well done I can't wait to get started , thanks for your info , been wanting to do this for awhile and move some of my seedlings starting inside from house window
I put cinder blocks down to hold mine down and it worked really well
I am picking one of these greenhouses as an Aldi find this next Wednesday. Can’t wait.
So exciting!!
Love your friendly disposition. Interesting!! Hold thumbs.. I've just invested in a tiny greenhouse

It would be great if they made fitted shade cloth covers for these.
