Alex Cobb got $15 million from the Tigers for 3 starts last season, which seems to be the going rate for a SP. And at the end of the day, it's a one year contract.
A one year experiment. I mean he could actually perform to a decent standard. Very much a high risk/reward deal but I'd much rather see some risk taking rather than the dumpster diving and last minute desperation signings over the last 6 seasons. Still under CBT and still room to hopefully answer the need at first base.
Cobb & Morton got $15 mil each. I’d rather have Verlander, because even if he’s toast, he’s Justin Verlander. All young pitchers will benefit from watching him day in & day out. If he pitches even ok, but the team sucks, he can easily be moved for some lower level prospects & that system can use whatever it can get. It’s a solid move that has multiple ways of paying off. & reminder, SF is easier to pitch in than Houston.
I'm fine with this signing, even at the price. It's only a 1-year deal, and we know what Verlander has been capable of for a *loooooong* time. Like you said, if he's even close to what he was in '22 and '23, I think he'll be well worth it.
Did you see where Arik Armstead posted his post tax check, when he was with the 49ers? He was only getting a little more than half of his money. Giants have to over pay because no one seems to want to play for them. CA taxes are not helping. Hopefully he can stay healthy.
Hopefully he does more for you guys than he did with my Mets. He didn't have that great a year last season. The Mets don't even have to pay him any of the money from the vesting option because, he didn't pitch the innings he needed to for the option to vest.
I say this as a dodger fan, I love the move. Why?? They aren't just signing him for his service, but also how the young studs in that rotation will be soaking up how a hall of famer goes about his business, Webb, Harrison especially. He still has stuff that plays, even for 41 years old. Hopefully he can still eat up some innings for them, 5-6 maybe would be ideal
The good news it's only a 1 year deal and if it doesn't pan out, it's okay. Oracle Park should help him at least and he can be a mentor for the other pitchers at least.
I don’t think it’s that bad. For all the young pitchers on this staff having a legend mentor them even for one year I think should be looked at more valuably than it is in that money. Giants also have a tendency to fix pitching. I’m not saying he’ll be CYA caliber but even a 2 bWAR season is all I ask
That's about right for a "seasoned" veteran. At least it's just a one-year contract, if he turns out to be the 1986 version of Steve Carlton. I wouldn't mind this guy being a pitching coach once he's done playing for Los Gigantes.
If i had to take a guess after hearing this. We are more than likely done in free agency. I wouldve been more upset signing Pete Alonso to like a 5-6 year deal to play mediocre defense and have a strike out contest with Yaz..... this is at least a 1 year deal, yes he will be 42. But if he gets 12-15 wins, an era under 4 and pitches 150 innings. People are gonna say Buster is a genius. If it doesn't work out its a 1 year deal. No real harm, maybe he made this deal cuz other options don't wanna come here? Just a thought
I remember when randy Johnson signed with the Giants you guys where lucky you guys got him randy won the 2001 world series with my home town team the dbacks back in 2001 dbacks are my favorite team
Agree that this is a play to sell tickets. We the fans all know chance of making postseason is slim at best, bringing a future hall of famer regardless of age will sell some tickets. That's why it's a one year deal
Dude… he’s getting paid to be a mentor to the young staff. Thats what buster wants him for. Plus plenty of other pitchers are getting $15M for one season that aren’t Verlander. Cobb got the same deal. Would you rather have Cobb? Same with Morton.
I’d rather sign this short deal than trade the farm for Tucker like he might have been looking at doing for a rental. Tucker is a free agent next offseason if they want him next yr they can sign him out of free agency when more money comes off the books.
It’s one year deal, who cares how much it is. If he pitches great and the Giants don’t win then he will get them a couple good prospects at the trade deadline. If he pitches good and the Giants are winning then he helps him with the playoffs. If the Giants and him don’t perform then it doesn’t matter anyways because he is gone
No matter if you like him or not, he definitely can pitch innings when healthy. At least he is a reliable innings eater while the young guys aren't stretched out to pitch 150+ innings while Verlander has tons of experience doing that.
15 million is a fair price for a pitcher that has 3 cy youngs, 9 all stars, and 2 rings. 1 bad season in 20 seasons, and in 2023 pitched a 3.1-3.3 ERA per 9 between the Mets and Astros. The information he can shed on the rest of our staff is invaluable. People don't know baseball better than Buster Posey.
He’ll bounce back and be solid. So many forget how many times this guy has been counted out after one down year due to injuries. Obviously he won’t have the resurgence he had after everyone thought he was cooked after 2014, but he’ll be solid. Especially when you consider the type of pitcher he is and the park he’s playing in. For the record I’m not a giants fan, Im a JV fan. I’m telling you, don’t put the old dog down yet! There’s more there, he just needs to get healthy. Let’s hope he can get to 300 wins by some miracle. Also 15 million isn’t all that surprising. In 2025 it’s a drop in the bucket
I hear he isn't a great club house guy either. I hear he doesn't really talk to the young guys or share his knowledge to them. That would have been the biggest upside but he if the stuff we hear is true then he is a diva and a jerk.
The 15 million doesn't bother me (not my money). I go back to Barry Zito and his contract and that eases my feelings a little on this deal. Made me think of Randy Johnson all over again. You need butts at Oracle Park so that's what I like about this. But I also have the "too little too late" feel. Dodgers have everything anyway on a silver platter.
Dude, I got to do the pop fly challenge in the outfield before we won our first world title and actually got to joke that I would play catcher for Verlander because he said they didn’t know where he was, since they practice on that side of that field. Man what an experience and luck on both of those. Lost by one ball for a Randy winn signed ball sadly
Stupid move, dumb, no win no future costly. He's not entertaining. This expensive for how many innings? So you whiffed on Sasaki? Lol you suck busta! Your clueless. So verlander, one of your hunt club buddies? Waste of $15!! Fans money! Boycott SF! Stupidest move in history given sf, situation! Ridiculously stupid.
You're paying for the privilege to have another HOF player alumni. Probably a good move, considering the Giants don't look to be a pennant winner next year and he could be useful to mentor any young pitchers they have.
Very bad signing. That $15 Million should have been used on a younger player!!! He is at the end of his career! We need younger talent that can be here a while!!!
This is far from the first time people have counted JV out. He’s coming off a season where he was never healthy. He’ll be solid. Just watch. Also, 15 mill is nothing in 2025.
Araez, available, his bat is really good, busta, out with verlander!? Vladdy, looking to move!! Busta, nowhere in site!!! Losers. Bailey, Chapman, Adammes, Bregman, Classy Arraez, DH. Matos, lee, ramos, mcrae, you want who? Fifteen million for what?? F, sf.
If getting an old guy was the goal, it should have been Max Scherzer...he's a bit younger. Let's hope/wish/pray Verlander has some gas left in the tank. Perhaps Buster is looking for " veteran leadership "?

We had Randy Johnson in 2009 and then won 2010. I guess we're winning 2026
This is what I'm optimistic about. He'll help the younger pitchers out like Randy did in 2009.
Randy Johnson was 45
@@ldo1308 what a fun fact
@@ldo1308JV is almost 42 same difference

Verlander omitted that he returned from his injury too soon last year. Hopefully this is true and he is ready to go at full strength
The X factor is the mentor factor for the half dozen young guys. NOBODY will be better as mentor
I'm fine with this signing, even at the price. It's only a 1-year deal, and we know what Verlander has been capable of for a *loooooong* time. Like you said, if he's even close to what he was in '22 and '23, I think he'll be well worth it.
Can't overlook a what a veteran presence can do for your rotation... younger pitchers can see in person how a championship caliber pitcher operates.
Did you see where Arik Armstead posted his post tax check, when he was with the 49ers? He was only getting a little more than half of his money. Giants have to over pay because no one seems to want to play for them. CA taxes are not helping. Hopefully he can stay healthy.

I always liked Verlander!
Wow shocker!😮 Been hoping we could do a deal for Castillo, maybe centered around Luciano, we’ve dealt with Seattle before.

Giants also have a tendency to fix pitching. I’m not saying he’ll be CYA caliber but even a 2 bWAR season is all I ask
This is Randy Johnson all over again. I'll be pleased to not say i told you so, come August.
Randy Johnson, Steve Carlton, Orel Hershiser, Warren Spahn, Is there a pattern here?
That's about right for a "seasoned" veteran. At least it's just a one-year contract, if he turns out to be the 1986 version of Steve Carlton. I wouldn't mind this guy being a pitching coach once he's done playing for Los Gigantes.
I’d put hicks in pen and put Birdson as 5th starter
Agreed. My thoughts exactly.
You're not the manager

42 years old?? Wow . Almost as old as Erik I think even though 42 isn’t old but old for baseball
They're also paying for mentorship. He's gonna spill his nuggets to the younger pitchers to help tidy up any loose ends in their pitching game.
Im hoping that he stays healthy, and that pitching in oracle will help. Besides, its for 1 year
over paid for 1 year at his prime
It's much better than no news.😆⚾🧡🖤

Pitching is very expensive on the free agent market… Everybody has to overpay it seems to get by decent.
This could either be a top rotation in the NL or a sub standard one that would lose a 5 game series to a single A ball team.
That 1-5 really doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence
Dude… he’s getting paid to be a mentor to the young staff. Thats what buster wants him for. Plus plenty of other pitchers are getting $15M for one season that aren’t Verlander. Cobb got the same deal. Would you rather have Cobb? Same with Morton.
Could help the other starters. What else do you think the Giants will do?
Hell are they looking to sign John “The Count” Monefusco?
I’d rather sign this short deal than trade the farm for Tucker like he might have been looking at doing for a rental. Tucker is a free agent next offseason if they want him next yr they can sign him out of free agency when more money comes off the books.
Only good thing about this is seeing Kate Upton at the ballpark!
It’s one year deal, who cares how much it is. If he pitches great and the Giants don’t win then he will get them a couple good prospects at the trade deadline. Correction. 4 solid options. Hicks does not have the skills to be a starting pitcher. Therefore they need one more pitcher.
They don’t really hicks was doing really good before the innings wore him down plus we have a number of young guys to fill in if needed
I guess that’s the best we can do for pitching
Seems like it, who else is there really to sign?
Reminds me when my dbacks signed mad bum not a good sign
this is exciting till the season starts and verlander shows his age
yeah he's just there for veteren pressence, and this is most likely verlanders last year
he needs the clemens peds XD
The Giants would be competitive in the NL Central. In the West they're guaranteed 4th place
6-7 ERA 5.50 with at least 2 DL stints 😮
We actually just paid a washed 41 year old 14 million??? Tell me I’m in a nightmare
I couldn't wait to hear your thoughts! 😂
@ sounds like we both have the same thoughts haha
@molon___labe pretty much. I would be ok with $5-6 million. $15m though??
Insane $15 mil? Christ what we could have for that...
Not the first time: Steve Carlton back in the 80s, Randy Johnson a few decades ago.
Im ok, hes a vet and can help the young pitchers
With Glenn being sick how about hooking up with Giants sports talk tonight ? You should be able to get enough sleep after 😂
@paulbegley1464 i feel kind of sick too! 😆
Would you rather have Charlie Morton for the same price? My local mlb team called the Orioles did. Count your blessings.
Verlander will pitch maybe 10-15 starts at most
If the top 3 average 13-15 wins...we are contenders
LOL at yoda
If he's a reasonable facsimile, it's well spent.
15 mil is a chunk. That takes them down to 26 left to use ouch
Verlander is signed to entice Sasaki to come to the Giants, at worst we will have Kate Upton in the stands.
Blake Sabol DFA'd to make room for JV.🥳🥳🥳 Michael Rotten is probably crying in a cold shower over it, lmao
Some Kate Upton and the girls
Ya I’m just curious what anyone would have paid for him..? Baseball is expensive
What’s about Hayden birdsong?
He will be in the rotation I believe.
i wonder if we signed him just to apologize for 2012
No matter if you like him or not, he definitely can pitch innings when healthy. At least he is a reliable innings eater while the young guys aren't stretched out to pitch 150+ innings while Verlander has tons of experience doing that.
Can't believe Giants payed 15 million. Not a smart move.
The $15 million should come out of poseys, account!!! No true fan, could have anything to do with this nitwit org.
it's something, right?
Rather have three releifers to start the first 5 innings😅
WHY?
LFG!!! I am so happy for us getting VERLANDER!!!🧡
I hope we get the real deal Verlander.. if so hell yess!!

Did Giants just replace Fraud-han Zaidi with Brian Sabean? Back to signing washed up All Stars like they did in the 2000's.
Verlander should end his MLB career with the team he began -- the Detroit Tigers.
I hear he isn't a great club house guy either. I hear he doesn't really talk to the young guys or share his knowledge to them. That would have been the biggest upside but he if the stuff we hear is true then he is a diva and a jerk.

washed up, injury prone
Same as Morton got so hopefully he is decent.
I don’t think Sasaki is going to SD. That org is in termoil after the wife’s letter to her brother in laws today

💯 Overrated
He'll do what Chris Sale did in ATL
I would be OK with it if it were 10-12 years ago
