It’s weird seeing Frontier starting to care about Elite again. I’d love to know what changed at frontier. I genuinely hope it’s not too late and that we can make elite great again.
Gonna be a long time before we expand that far (Formorian Frontier), but I know exactly what I want to build and where. Didn't have "Frontier developing something potentially fun for Elite" in my 2024 bingo card, what a pleasant surprise. Hope they don't screw up making it a player group thing, since there is more than enough space in... space.
I am *cautiously* optimistic. It sounds good on paper, but... it's FDev we are talking about. They would find a way to make eating chocolate a boring grind and call it "gameplay". We have to live and see.
It's just another BS time grind to make a new system connected to the bubble. It has all the same assets as the thousands of other systems. It's pointless really.
This is literally what I have had dreams about back when I was first playing odessey missions! With a couple more large features, elite could make itself the greatest space game without a question!
I am really pleased to see Elite getting some love this year. A while back I was wondering if the game was ever going to bounce back. I have started playing again recently and I must say, the engineering rebalancing and general optimization improvements have been very welcome. I am having great fun raiding settlements as you no longer need to grind so much in order to upgrade your gear.
I came back during the sixth Titan, and had a really fun couple of weeks. The Engy grind got decimated during that week, and in hours I had G5 full in every type.
Sounds promising. I miss ED, and I was sad to leave it when Frontier stopped supporting us console players. Glad to hear new stuff is still being done for the game.
Your sacrifice made this all possible. Sad it had to be this way, but you have to admit the franchise is better off. I appreciate you, and all the other console commanders. Perhaps we'll see you someday on the pc-side. Until then, o7 commander.
@@recon939 I've done my fair share of bashing as you say, but this one was different because the op seems to have made peace with the reality, not sitting around sulking and flaming fdev years on. Its undeniable the game is better off now. Sometimes sacrifices have to be made for the greater good overall. I stand with fdev in their decision. But the CC's, especially honorable ones such as the op are not forgotten.
@Tamburello_1994 Most people know PC's run the gaming community, but I've been a console play since the Nintendo it's just more comfortable to me. I feel like it is more corporate greed that holds console back more than anything, not knowing all the specifics on hardware new console seem closer to PC more than ever and any reason why they can't make games for both seem to come down to money or corporate nonsense. Just my opinion.
@recon939 I've always been a console player, but I think Elite Dangerous is a rare instance where gaming communities across all platforms came together. It's a shame Frontier chose not to continue with console support, but I really enjoyed my time with the game and it's online comunity
Perhaps you're merely being short-sighted. It'll be a pre-grind-fest for a larger grind-fest for some end-game perpetual grind that unlocks more grind. They're not ones to pussy foot about when it comes to a spot of tedium 🤌
Heh, you made a video last October asking what players wanted to see in the game and this is very similar to what I and a couple of others hoped for! Very cool to see this and it will definitely bring me back to the game.
It's enough to pique interest. I expect it's going to be CG scale, though. Prior station builds have been, including the scale hacks as FDev dramatically misestimate player abilities and interest.
@@afaxmachine5045 Could be a combo of '1st discovery' and credits. 10 billion to hire the construction ship and associated crew and materials to come build the station, rather than delivering a million tonnes of x and y. I agree with OP though, it needs to be solo accessible, whatever the mechanic.
Elite doesn't really have big clans and organisations like some other games. Carriers were originally intended to be Clan owned before being charged to be owned by individual players. I imagine this will be the same.
This will make Deep Space Exploration, tremendously easier. Alot of players already use Fleet Carriers in a web across the galaxy, so having stations dotted in-between will make refueling the carriers easier
They said you could daisy-chain colonized star systems to reach far. I think we'll be able to create a grid of support systems across the galaxy eventually. I imagine it could eventually make STAR and DSSA carriers obsolete.
I think its time to go back to Elite. I thought Star Citizen would be my game but I cannot stand the bugs and crashes. Think its time to come home to Elite
Hearing SC is still a buggy mess still makes me sad. I quit playing years ago and thought if I waited a few years I’d try again. Has it gotten any better recently with updates this year?
When my brother and I took a trip out towards the rim of the galaxy, we kept finding awesome planets and systems that we would have loved to set up bases or colonies on. Would be cool if you could build way out there, I guess we'll see!
It would be cool if once you've built your way there you could kind of cut off the chain you made to get there and have an independent little bubble somewhere
Colonizing outwards from the bubble, we won't be able to colonize systems way out in the rim. They made that clear during the stream. Maybe eventually we'll get there, they haven't given details on how far or close to the bubble we need to be.
@@pandafoz9994 That's how I see it, I wonder how close we need to be to the bubble? Also, how many billions or trillions of credits needed? I hoping at least it's not much to start something and maybe the allow others to build more expensive structures.
I’ve been colonizing systems and building space stations (and destroying stations of my enemies) for years in X4 and SE. Adding this to Elite won’t bring me back because the bugs and performance issues remain. But if I were still interested in Elite, this gameplay would be welcome as long as it is limited (one system per player).
I think the only reason they're starting to give 2 cents about ED is that they see the new features that SC is bringing into their own game. But, they still need to make major changes to keep players interested in the game, have a few new ships won't do it or a space station.
@@bandybushido But isn't it curious that two weeks after them anouncing space stations and base buildings, Frontier suddenly allows something similar? And they don't show anything concrete other than few screenshots of stations build from existing assets... C'mon it looks fishy IMHO.
They teased the feature at the start of this year, and base building is quite frankly not a new concept in the sci fi genre to begin with. @@keeperofthefate
I hope the colonization ship carries a group of the controlling minor faction from the system in which the colonization ship was paid for (and this can be done in any occupied system) thus, minor factions actually have a way to expand into previously unoccupied territories.
Every time I watch an ObsidianAnt video I am reminded of how much better the lighting and graphics are in Horizons and what we've lost and are never getting back.
Oh ty for this. I recently returned and noticed it looks horrible! I've been trying to adjust my settings to get it to look how I remembered. I can't do it. I keep asking myself "How is it possible this looked sooo much better on console?" Now I know why.
I stopped playing when the game became a targoid target shooting simulator, this might make me come back. I'm still sad a peaceful approach was never even an option.
The one single thing I have always wanted in E:D is player colonization and station building. If they nail this, it'd make a lil dream come true for me!
Until servers are shut down and Elite is dead for good, I will not stop asking for ship interiors. And I could not care less if anybody have super bulletproof argument against it. I want my interiors. Anyway, nice to see some new stuff.
A large part of the reason people spend ludicious money to buy ships in SC are the interiors. Giving players the feeling of ownership even if it is just a digital object.
@@Kev-Mulv this *exactly*. give the grind a purpose, there's something that's *yours*. Being able to customize your dashboard with the bobble heads and all that shows that they must kinda get it. Being able to customize the whole interior of your ship, make it feel lived in, would be so awesome.
@@alexanderlane The Large class of ships in E:D are basically flying apartment blocks. The other 2 classes are roomy or comfy, respectively. Part of the sci-fi fantasy is that your starship is your home, and you travel around the galaxy having adventures in it. Interior design is critical to that fantasy; Cloud Imperium understand this. Frontier are selling ships outright now, and they must be making some bank because they're giving E:D increasing attention. Some people disapprove selling ships but if it keeps Elite alive I'm all for it, there is no other game like it.

Thanks for the update Ant. Very interesting... Interesting enough to get me back into the game maybe. Sounds a lot like Elite is getting some love again which is great to see and about 4 years overdue. I do wonder what has changed over at Fdev to cause this.
I did not expect that to be honest and I am very, very positively surprised. It's been almost two years that I logged into Elite the last time, but damn, that stuff is certainly bringing me back. Even if the colonization feature is still somewhere in the future (and we all know FDev's delays), I'm eager to get back into the cockpit.
Announcing something and actually producing something playable and entertaining is two very different things for Frontier. Come back in 5 years and they might have done something... maybe... if they haven't abandoned it like they did VR or consoles.
They've only just announced it. It'll be a good 5 years plus before we see anything. FDEV take years just to make a couple of reverse engineer NPCs. ... if we ever actually see anything...
All these new updates have me coming back to the game again. Frontier have surprised me I thought the game was going to dwindle and fade into obscurity but this is all amazing news.
Guys the mandalay is amazing. Not only does it have a pretty decent base increase over the asp explorer in terms of range, but it turns on a dime both in standard flight, and in super cruise. And the benefit I haven't seen anybody talk about quite yet is just how efficient the super cruise overcharge is in this thing. in my asp explorer, i would begin to overheat within about ten seconds of using it, and my fuel gauge would drop so fast that I would never really be able to cross large distances efficiently. The heat in my mandalay, seems to actually cap out at around sixty five percent, it literally just stops going up. Not to mention that the fuel burn rate is far far slower, so much slower that using boost for every destination is actually viable so long as you're not in a dead star region with no fuel for a long while.
Trading in Elite is a series of "step ups". You start with a small ship and each time you "step up" your ship size, your ability to make money jumps. Once you hit carrier level though you end up wandering "what next"? Even simple colonisation would be fun, but hopefully there's a "step up" benefit. I've always wanted to be able to create a fleet of trading ships where I can find good trade routes, park my carrier(s) nearby, load up with a good comodity then jump to another system and unload (with help from NPCs). Having a colony on a planet that produces ore, which can be loaded onto the nearby carrier would be a great "step up", even if you had to do the run yourself, but each time you did, you had a number of NPCs follow you with additional goods.
Elite is my favorite game and the one that I spent the most hours in, by far. I got into it on XBox and it doesn't make sense for me to build a PC, so I've not played for a few years now. I missed the ability to transfer my save to PC so even if I did get a PC I can't imagine finding the time to accomplish all of the engineering and wealth that I did on console. However, if there were significant improvements made as discussed here, I might be inclined to start a fresh game on PC. Even if it were base building mechanics similar to Starfield, that would be awesome.
You can still transfer your account, and they give you a free copy of Horizons. Google "Elite Commander Console Migration" You get to keep all your stuff and continue the same save.
I transferred recently. I use Geforce Now and stream it to the TV while using a controller (with wireless keyboard at hand). Bought Odyessy for £6. It's great!
Yo, i moved from console about 4 months ago, only thing i lost is the reputation with the factions in the game. Everything else is transferred from console to PC, all the engineering modules and ships, and materials. Also the fleet carrier will need to be decommissioned from console version and you will get the money back and you can buy a new one on PC. So not sure where you get your will loose everything. You lose 3 things, faction reputation, fleet carrier which needs to be decommissioned, and your AI crew. Other than that everyone else is same….
Finally something that sounds really interesting! :P But let me guess: You are required to grind enormous amounts of credits to be able to colonize those systems (galaxy far far away :P ). Yet, at any point they are not gonna create you single penny worth of credits at any point? :/ Right, Frontier?
I could not care less. I just wanted a Freelancer like space sim - a single-player game with normal save-load system; focused on spaceflight, trading, combat, adventure etc; mixing narrative elements with a sandbox universe populated with colorful NPCs, companions, factions, guilds, with a plethora of ships and equipment distributed across different regions and factions; land on planet and space stations, speak to NPCs, get jobs etc. We have added 100+ space sims in the past decade or so. Not a single one has even tried to do even 50% of what Freelancer did 20+ years ago.
@@hibbidyjibbidyy I had high hopes for Rebel Galaxy (Outlaw), but the game world is very barebones in terms of factions, locations, ships etc. But yeah, you are right that RGO is the closest one to Freelancer, however distantly. Impressive how much they achieved with a two-person dev team. If the developers had not abandoned their DLC and modding tool plans, it might have gotten there.
A big and fairly surprising step in the right direction for Elite! Wasn’t expecting that! Weird to see FDev start adding meaningful stuff to Elite again, but I hope it’s a sign of more to come. More depth to ship gameplay via ship interiors plz? I can dream… either way, this update is gonna probably get me back into Elite.
I discovered a few star systems with earth like planets a couple years ago just for the possibility of one day being able to claim it and colonize it. Exciting!
System Colonization will likely be an immense task which will take thousands of resources to even do, or an immense amount of credits to upkeep the process which could take months of real time to do. I'm for it though, it's a unique take that's 'base-building adjacent' in some ways, and I think that's pretty cool in all honesty. Also that cobra Mk 5 looks AMAZING and I will be buying it with money when it comes out.
@@barking_mad6649I have no expectations for this. Odyssey was supposed to change elite. It was all just a minimum viable product and in the process burned an entire console playerbase. If I know FDev, this will be implemented in such a cheap way or worse grind forever.
Excellent! I hope at some point they combine it with a sort of Sim-City engine to add more complexity to planetary colonies. They could be self-evolving or player guided.
This is heading in the direction I originally wished for Elite - something like "EVE Online light" background and player economy setup and first person flying ships. I am certainly going to dust off the joystick and pedals and poke my head back into Elite to have a look around.
Stop right here. There not gonna be player based economy. As I understand it we gonna choce if system gonna be more agricurtla, industyr, military etc. directed. Please don't expect nothing they didn't specifilly and directlly said or show
@@fistsofsnake5475 errm I never said there was going to be - what I said was that I *originally wished* that there would be a player economy. I see these changes as going in that direction a bit, but I am not expecting there to suddenly be a full player economy imminently.
Last time I was excited was for Fleet Carriers, and that was so over promised and under delivered that i moved Elite to my "dead games" category on Steam next to Hawken and Loadout.
Agree. Although I think that this will hit different. Let's be honest. The fleet careers were rather a gimmic compared to possibility of colonization. If done well it will be golden I am just hoping that every new system will expand the area for new colonies (which would make sense). I hope they won't nerf it in a weird name, artificially blocking players for really expanding the game living world
It will probely not be an update but a paid dlc. Neverless I really love the idea of having your own star system. I just hope its not going to a full time job to achive and maintain it. Cause my playtime is limited
They've needed to do this. 99%+ of the galaxy is still unexplored let alone occupied. If every active player had a thousand systems it wouldn't make a scratch in the space available to expand.
Very interesting to see both Elite and star citizen announce player built space stations. It's pretty obvious who will have theirs up and running first, but it's going to be interesting to see how the two games approach it.
Elite's will definitely get theirs out first, but I can see it being very generic, fun for a little while, but lacking in depth and detail, and it basically works as a hold-me-over until Star Citizen adds theirs.
@@Billy-bc8pkIt's just going to be the exact same space station as all the other. You just grind for it to be built. These systems will literally just be the same as all the others.

the new cobra is genuinely a super cool design and reminds me of why i got into elite in the first place, the ship design. it's a little sad for me that i can't find any reason to actually get back into the game, there's no point in grinding to buy a cool new ship if there's no new gameplay i'm excited about, i just can't make myself care about power play or system building if it doesn't include an on foot survival/base building aspect to help anchor the player
Bit late to this this post, but bravo to Frontier and the Elite Dangerous team. I've played Elite for years now and although I felt let down with the development over the years there was always something that kept me loving the game. It's one of the best PC games I've ever got into. I always felt a bit of pity for Frontier, they put up with a lot of griping and moaning from people about the game it seemed they couldn't win no matter what but I always had faith and always will in Elite Dangerous it's such a beautiful game to play especially with the score. Anyway see you out there
it would be really cool if we could colonize far away systems in a middle of nowhere and develop them over time. Just imagine independent societies of players that you could visit while exploring galaxy.
I have so many questions.... Do I go in a system and claim that by starting to build a station like I do in X4? Do another player come by and help me or burn down my station? If more players build a station and takes months or years to find resources, who profit for that station? Is the profit based on how much you contribute, like for community goals? Is the station another money sucking thing that you have to pay the upkeep like your capital ship? Can you walk around these stations or are they like the standard stations? Are the station built only in space or on the planets too? So many questions, because if the game start to become like X4, maybe there is a future... But if all of this end up being in pure Frontier style a minimal effort thing, where you build the station by clicking a button to accept a mission and then it is a community goal and another station eventually appear, and the story happens in text form in galnet, then I am sorry but I won't even waste my time.
It's finally a good direction to introduce those features... although a bit late compared to other games (I won't give names here) but it's better late than never... One of the reasons I've stopped playing ED aside from the endless grinding mentality, is that me personally I'm busy with another game doing just that, bases and orbital stations building and managing and influencing the life of a planet or moon and eventually the system where I operate with my actions as a player... I'd love to see something similar in ED as well because I really used to love this game...
Well slowly but surely Frontier is adding mechanics that they promised when they were on Kickstarter. And I hope they will add, like this one, mechanics that they didn't even mention at the beginning of the game's development.
Oh, I hope it's possible to make self-sufficient systems and/or lets systems you own (in range of jump drives) trade with each others. And as an eve player ofc I will look keenly into the possibility to make some money with planetary interactions like mines farms and so on to fuel the production chain.
They must have the fastest programmers, graphic artists and sound techs in the galaxy at Fdev if they can take an idea they saw last week and deliver it before the end of this year.
_Potentially_ a very good move by FDev ... in concept, anyways. Could get quite a few players back. Good to see FDev working on a new game mechanic. FDev's track record suggests that this will be a big grind-fest. Then there's the question of implementation based on the spectre of the Odyssey expansion and the state it was in at release.
I probably won't have the time or energy to invest a hundred hours into this, but I applaud the initiative for its ambition. Atmospheric worlds next perhaps? Also, I wonder what three people are going to be doing in a Cobra... Loving the design though, cockpit maybe a bit angular but yeah.
Howdy hi hi, One of the trends in gaming generally has been the addition of player agency with regards to altering the gaming environment. Terrain deformation, foliage removal/addition, creation of buildings and making those structures functional. In other words go west young man and prosper! Stake your claim, build your home, make your fortune, and put it on display for all to see.
Personally, this new ship being another Cobra is,... sad. I'd much prefer brand new designs instead of rebuilt "variants". Still gonna buy it, but still. :( Colonization sounds like there's a lot of potential in it. I hope they nail it and do tons with it. Hopefully we can get some new community goals and gameplay opportunities to go along with it. 🤞
@valaryc nah, it's pretty obvious it's a development and advanment of a Cobra but every thing has been changed and if you stick a Mk3 and Mk5 side by side they are totally different, but you have eyes and can see that for yourself but you probably wanted something different like a Panther Clipper, which is fine, but I like a new imagened Cobra that will be a proper ship like it should be a the poster ship of the game unlike the Mk3
@@___Snake___ Don't make assumptions on my behalf, thanks. I said what I said and it still stands exactly as it was written. If you're looking to argue, go somewhere else with it. Goodbye. I will not engage further.
mildly concerned as a pretty much solo player that this will be more content i'll probably be left out of, but it seems like a cool concept. Mk5 looks awesome, depending on how it runs, i might have a new favorite small ship.
Wow, I haven't played Elite for years, but this system colonization thing could get me back into the game again. If there a good way to easily see what systems you have personally been the first to discover? I'd love to find a good system that I, myself, found and plant something there.
I think it will be the top yier powerplay reward. You'll unlock the colonization ship and get the privilege to colonize in the name of Mahon, Duvall, or whoever you pledged to.
That's a good idea, but from what they said, you colonise the system first and if players want they can push the powers to come there, so the colonisation is probably not originated from powers. Better : you colonise it in your own name ! (if I got it right)
I miss playing ED, had clocked up 600+ hours only for Engineering to ruin it for me. The endless grind and combat nerfs totally messed up my lowly in game life as a trader. Having to grind out mats and do faction quests just to keep my favourite trading routes safe became too much, even though I know they are purely optional, it felt like a must. I did enjoy the surface landing, but the rover missions were too long winded and became boring after a short while. Would love to get back into it, but alas I'd be light years behind and with a change of work probably don't have the time anymore. I do like watching people playing it though, so thank you for these videos. O7
That's it? Grinding to create systems that are the same as all the other systems. No new real gameplay. People praise it now, but will be back complaining about it like they did with the Thargoid war.
I think the expansion of the bubble is awesome, and would love to see players take part in it. Personally though, I think expansion should be relatively rare and difficult to do. Maybe like community events that existing factions put out? I definitely do not think every player should be able to spit out colonies. It's already annoying scrolling past "Sonic the Hedgehog's Vape Shop LOL" carrier parked in a system, I can't imagine how jarring spending time in player-made space would be.
While Helldivers 2 satisfies my FPS co-op PVE needs, seems Elite is coming back to the forefront as my second-life-sim. Sitting with a Carrier and 4 Bil something credits, I had done everything I set out to do in the game and have taken a long break. But if all goes well, I could be back "home" for a longtime. After all, there's plenty of space to colonize.
There will surely have to be a resource-gathering element to produce expanded facilities in a system including extra surface bases. I love the idea of my own system and maybe defending it from raiders.
There's the potential for so many further systems (in the gaming sense, not the astronomical sense) to spin out of this one, could totally be the start of something really cool!
Recently came back to ED. I am impressed with how polished the game is today compared to that first 6 months after Odyssey release. Player colonization and station building will save this game. Really happy to see Frontier selling ships for Arx too. Just my opinion but im pleased enough with everything happening im coming back for the next 12 months.

No, it def needs to be a player group thing.
I am *cautiously* optimistic. It sounds good on paper, but... it's FDev we are talking about. They would find a way to make eating chocolate a boring grind and call it "gameplay". We have to live and see.
FDev has been doing a great job of late and deserve a bit of praise, and perhaps a look. You're missing out.
It's just another BS time grind to make a new system connected to the bubble. It has all the same assets as the thousands of other systems. It's pointless really.

@@cmdrgarbage1895 Why are you here then?
Enjoy out looking in? LOL.
@Tamburello_1994 Wow, one of the few comments I see that is not bashing console players. Thanks for that.
Maybe I'm jaded, but I smell another grind-fest.
Perhaps you're merely being short-sighted. It'll be a pre-grind-fest for a larger grind-fest for some end-game perpetual grind that unlocks more grind. They're not ones to pussy foot about when it comes to a spot of tedium 🤌
I quit in 2016 when they dropped engineers.
I don't mind, end game players need something to do.
Exactly my thoughts. Just sounds like they are introducing the engineers all over again, just to slam us with an RNG nightmare
It's elite the grind is its most defining feture
Heh, you made a video last October asking what players wanted to see in the game and this is very similar to what I and a couple of others hoped for! Very cool to see this and it will definitely bring me back to the game.
For me personally these would be very interesting updates IF they’re realistic to do solo and don’t require player groups.
It's enough to pique interest. I expect it's going to be CG scale, though. Prior station builds have been, including the scale hacks as FDev dramatically misestimate player abilities and interest.
It might be possible for solos to do some of the content, but I expect it will either take a very long time for solos to build things like space ports
Probably this is not even for groups, probably this is community related.
He did say that there will be a limit how far from the bubble you can go, so this isn’t going to be a New Colonia thing.
They said you could daisy-chain colonized star systems to reach far. I think we'll be able to create a grid of support systems across the galaxy eventually. I imagine it could eventually make STAR and DSSA carriers obsolete.

@@mattjohnson7369 They said that would be possible, but you would have to chain your way out there over time. Like the Colonia Bridge Project.

That one. Elephant in the room that Obsidian Ant conviniently don't talk about.

That's the first of the new ships that really works for me, just on looks and concept alone. Frontier has been cooking and it's awesome.
I hope the colonization ship carries a group of the controlling minor faction from the system in which the colonization ship was paid for (and this can be done in any occupied system) thus, minor factions actually have a way to expand into previously unoccupied territories.
I would love it. My faction weant to go to specific system but we bit far from it right now so it would give us a chance. Let's wait and see
Every time I watch an ObsidianAnt video I am reminded of how much better the lighting and graphics are in Horizons and what we've lost and are never getting back.

I recently returned and noticed it looks horrible!
I've been trying to adjust my settings to get it to look how I remembered.

Now I know why.
This could be a cool idea, let's hope it doesn't have a way to be ruined by gankers so long as Frontier does nothing about that issue with Open Play
I stopped playing when the game became a targoid target shooting simulator, this might make me come back. I'm still sad a peaceful approach was never even an option.
They started selling ships and the money arrived, result:
Now they need to sell Odyssey on consoles and maybe a lot more money will arrive.
The star citizen model works!
I'm Def going to chip in by buying some skins etc.

I love my ship interiors in Space Engineers and X4 Foundations. It makes a HUGE difference in immersion.

I will absolutely get into this again omg.

Come back in 5 years and they might have done something... maybe... if they haven't abandoned it like they did VR or consoles.
interesting...
after years away from elite, i might actually jump back in the cockpit.
Yesterday, after a yatus of a couple of year i reconnected my hotas to the pc... and scratched of the dust from my ships :D
Google "Elite Commander Console Migration"
You get to keep all your stuff and continue the same save.
I could have sworn they are still continuing limited transfers, aren't they?
But let me guess: You are required to grind enormous amounts of credits to be able to colonize those systems (galaxy far far away :P ). Yet, at any point they are not gonna create you single penny worth of credits at any point? :/
Right, Frontier?
I could not care less.
I just wanted a Freelancer like space sim - a single-player game with normal save-load system; focused on spaceflight, trading, combat, adventure etc; mixing narrative elements with a sandbox universe populated with colorful NPCs, companions, factions, guilds, with a plethora of ships and equipment distributed across different regions and factions; land on planet and space stations, speak to NPCs, get jobs etc.
We have added 100+ space sims in the past decade or so. Not a single one has even tried to do even 50% of what Freelancer did 20+ years ago.
rebel galaxy if you like more arcady x4 for sim?
Exciting!
Are we able to land on those type of planets yet? Just wondering since I haven't played the game in about a year.
No@@brianawilk285
System Colonization will likely be an immense task which will take thousands of resources to even do, or an immense amount of credits to upkeep the process which could take months of real time to do. I'm for it though, it's a unique take that's 'base-building adjacent' in some ways, and I think that's pretty cool in all honesty.
Also that cobra Mk 5 looks AMAZING and I will be buying it with money when it comes out.
This game still has so much potential. More potential than any other space game. As long as they never abandon their platform

Just started playing Elite again with the arrival of the Mandalay. This new feature sounds pretty amazing!
Last time I was excited was for Fleet Carriers, and that was so over promised and under delivered that i moved Elite to my "dead games" category on Steam next to Hawken and Loadout.
Haven't heard of Hawken in a long time -- sad that that game had two chances to become something and died both times.
@@Billy-bc8pksome time ago the original Hawken was revived by the community as the Hawakening project. It isn't dead anymore!
Well given active player counts barely registers into the low thousands these days.... that's not difficult lol
This sounds incredible. I expect the gameplay loop to be a nightmare but i'm willing to give it a try.
Very interesting to see both Elite and star citizen announce player built space stations. It's pretty obvious who will have theirs up and running first, but it's going to be interesting to see how the two games approach it.
I wouldn't count on SC getting anything up and running
Elite's will definitely get theirs out first, but I can see it being very generic, fun for a little while, but lacking in depth and detail, and it basically works as a hold-me-over until Star Citizen adds theirs.

I really hope they work and improve on missions, most of them are just soo boring and have no depth.
the new cobra is genuinely a super cool design and reminds me of why i got into elite in the first place, the ship design. it's a little sad for me that i can't find any reason to actually get back into the game, there's no point in grinding to buy a cool new ship if there's no new gameplay i'm excited about, i just can't make myself care about power play or system building if it doesn't include an on foot survival/base building aspect to help anchor the player
Back when I was really into ED I suggested they do this on their forums. That was 9 years ago.
This is going to be a new era for ED when it comes to player count because this will make the game more favorable when it comes to Player Owned stuff.
This have a lot of potential, If implemented well...
Can i please walk in my ship first, like come on......
Really nice, they are actually trying to make the game better again. I love this game so much, hopefully they keep working on it.
OK now I'm excited.
Oh, I hope it's possible to make self-sufficient systems and/or lets systems you own (in range of jump drives) trade with each others. And as an eve player ofc I will look keenly into the possibility to make some money with planetary interactions like mines farms and so on to fuel the production chain.
They're still going! I'm amazed that they've managed to not end up like Kerbal Space Program 2. That in of itself is pretty cool.
8:50 What star system is that? I haven't seen a star with rings before. Usually its just gas giants, etc...
Great Idea, seems reactionary to Start Citizen. Based on how crapy Odyssey was I bet Frontier will totally ruin this Idea.
They must have the fastest programmers, graphic artists and sound techs in the galaxy at Fdev if they can take an idea they saw last week and deliver it before the end of this year.
Now, finally, this is impressive. I have quite a few planets to my name over the years, I assume I get first dibs on settling them.
Frontier will add anything, including player owned stations, but won't add ship interiors
Wow! This is great news!
Dang, this is kind of an exciting turn! I hope this is the start of a trend, could maybe finally turn things around and get some life into the game!
I love the idea. Im worried it'll just turn into a mix of powerplay and "deliver x of y, here"
Oh you mean what StarCitizen people keep waiting for from that game? Lol
This is game changing. My dream was to be able to make stations and expand humanity. I'm so happy it's coming true
Howdy hi hi,
One of the trends in gaming generally has been the addition of player agency with regards to altering the gaming environment.
Colonization sounds like there's a lot of potential in it. I hope they nail it and do tons with it. Hopefully we can get some new community goals and gameplay opportunities to go along with it.

Its a totally new design lol
@@___Snake___ Based on? Come on,... you can do it. That's right, based on the Cobra. It's a rebuilt variant, not a wholly brand new design.

Mk5 looks awesome, depending on how it runs, i might have a new favorite small ship.
This is what selling ships gets you. Good to see ED being developed again.
This is really making me want to get back in the game ! If they use this to make player run economy that would be awesome.
Time to spread The Dark Wheel's influence to the edge of the galaxy!
Pretty cool! But what I REALLY want to know is: WHEN PANTHER CLIPPER!!? :D
I might actually pick this game up again
I think the expansion of the bubble is awesome, and would love to see players take part in it. Personally though, I think expansion should be relatively rare and difficult to do. Maybe like community events that existing factions put out? I definitely do not think every player should be able to spit out colonies.
It's already annoying scrolling past "Sonic the Hedgehog's Vape Shop LOL" carrier parked in a system, I can't imagine how jarring spending time in player-made space would be.
this new gameplay feature is just amazing. Didn´t expect that
While Helldivers 2 satisfies my FPS co-op PVE needs, seems Elite is coming back to the forefront as my second-life-sim. Sitting with a Carrier and 4 Bil something credits, I had done everything I set out to do in the game and have taken a long break. But if all goes well, I could be back "home" for a longtime. After all, there's plenty of space to colonize.
I also wonder if they plan on adding terraforming?
Sure. Just like they planned ship interiors, offline play and Linux support.
The Mk V is gorgeous. Can't even tell where the weapons bays are. Very slick. Wonder how it will stack up with the Kraits?
Wait... It means that we can build Bases On planets???
And build starports too.
You will be El Presidente of your own system
no
@@cmdrls212 They said you can place settlements and choose the economy type
There will surely have to be a resource-gathering element to produce expanded facilities in a system including extra surface bases. I love the idea of my own system and maybe defending it from raiders.
There's the potential for so many further systems (in the gaming sense, not the astronomical sense) to spin out of this one, could totally be the start of something really cool!
Don't underestimate Frontier's ability to make any game mechanic an excruciating, soulless grind.
5 years too late to get my interest back...
maybe they can actually pull something cool off.
In system jumps would be great! Limited to 1 jump without docking again, and a big chunky module taking up space again forcing you to choose if you want it
