Latvian riflemen offered their services to the Russian Provisional Government and other parties. They wanted Latvian autonomy in Russia as a reward. Refusal was received everywhere. Only the Bolsheviks promised Latvia independence, not autonomy. The Entente did not recognize the aspirations for independence and insisted on maintaining the empire within 1914. The British government even sent some tanks to Bermont's forces while they were trying to occupy Riga. Where did the Bermont Army take armored vehicles, planes, artillery if it was all under the control of the Entente forces? The help of the British and French squadron to the Latvian forces was only an arbitrary action of the squadron commander. Since there is nothing to blame the riflemen for supporting the Bolsheviks.
