- One of the 3 new RMC coasters coming in 2016 is in northern California at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom! It will be called The Joker, and is a makeover of the GCI wooden roller coaster Roar. Here I will be analyzing everything about this coaster and giving my full thoughts on this new addition!

1:54 Roadrunner Express isn't the only non-inverting coaster at the park. There's also Cobra, remember? Yes, I know it's a family coaster, but it still counts. Also, Roar already had plenty of airtime, so It's hardly the first time Discovery Kingdom has ever had airtime.
Either way, I think we can all agree that Six Flags has made some questionable decisions when it comes to new rides at Discovery Kingdom. I mean seriously, why did they feel the need to build Dare Devil when they already had Hammerhead Shark, which is basically the same ride, only floorless and dueling?
Now they're going to tear down Roar, a perfectly fine GCI classic and replace it with a clearly-uninspired RMC coaster that is almost exactly the same, only with a few inversions needlessly tacked on. Don't get me wrong, the new layout still looks great, but it has no identity of its own nor any substantial reason to exist. Texas Giant and Rattler were both old, rough, and always breaking down, Magic Mountain's Colossus was experiencing structural problems that prevented it from operating properly, meaning it almost never raced, and so on. But roar? That ride was still relatively smooth, reliable, and forceful. Out of all the wooden coasters that could use a makeover, Roar would be near the bottom of my list. They're literally spending millions of dollars to fix what isn't broken.
Another thing that boggles my mind is how they're not giving it a name like "Roaring Rampage" or something else that gives a nod to Roar. Instead, they're theming it to the Joker from the Batman series. How does that even remotely fitting? Sure, there's Superman: Ultimate Flight, but even then, the emphasis was on flight, thus fitting into the Sky section of the park. But Joker? Since when could the Joker fly? What's next, are they going to call their next new addition "Batman The Ride" and put it right next to the aquarium? It's as if Six Flags is trying to strip away the whole wild animal theme that gave the park charm in favor of pointless unoriginality.
I guess they're just trying keep up with California's Great America, since they recently opened Gold Striker, which is more advanced than Roar. If that's the case, then I guess I can understand where they're coming from, but still...
I totally agree with you. SFDK is my home park and I'm curious is to why they made these decisions. Especially marketing Dare devil as a coaster when clearly it's not. IMO for the 2016 season, Six Flags great adventure should've gotten the RMC roller coaster except not on El Toro that will be a horrible decision. More like an RMC Woodie. And SFDK get the 4D free fly coaster. that would be a great choice better than what they did for 2016.

+Dolphanatic I think they put Dare Devil in due to lack of space. Do you know how many coasters they have tried to put in the spot where Superman currently is? As far as I know, the first one was Zonga, which was unfortunately always closed when I was there so I never got to ride it. They replaced it with the Tony Hawk Spin cycle or whatever that one was called. Then they replaced that with Superman. DK has pretty limited space in the front of the park, where all but one of the coasters are. As much as I love Medusa (it's one of my favorite coasters), I think it was a mistake to put it in because of its sheer size. The coaster is huge in scale for the space they have and they probably could've put 2 decent coasters in the space it occupies. DK got the Dare Devil (I barely even count it as a coaster) probably because Six Flags wanted to put a new coaster in and it had to be a small one. I'm looking forward to going on the Joker when I'm there in a few months.

I am going to have faith in this ride because I remember a year agi when every said that Wicked Cyclone looks lame. They said it was too slow, or not tall enough, or not intense enough, but it turned out to be amazing when it opened and I have heard that most people think that it is the best RMC hybrid. I haven't had the chance to ride a RMC hybrid yet or any RMC for that matter but I plan on riding Lightning Rod next year as well as Wicked Cyclone.
Iron Rattler is far better than wc and ive ridden both but then again my opinions are alot different then most peoples

Swift lucasben I haven't ridden any and I doubt I will ride Iron Rattler for a long time so I will have to live with Wicked Cyclone but I've heard only good things about it.

I hope SFGADV gets an RMC in the Future. I guess it would be hard to design something that is not too similar to Toro. But SFGADV needs a new coaster to put them back on the map.

I just realized my posts really make no sense. Let me explain. I think Six Flags Great Adventure
adds innovative, cool new Roller Coasters. However, I just don't think they make the best choices. Total Mayhem is a clone of Batman:The Ride at Fiesta Texas. I'm just saying their additions could be better if they were a little more original. And by "back on the map" I meant KK and El Toro can't keep Gadv. In operation for much longer. TM will help, but they need an Original new Coaster to push them over the top.

IMO, this looks phenomenal. The pacing is brilliant, the layout is phenomenal, and it's short but it looks like it will pack a lot of punch. And Taylor, did you just call it a "basic" RMC? Nah.

The Rattler was Fiesta Texas's only wooden coaster.
+CoasterLover2001 But the Rattler was in awful shape and was one of the roughest coasters out there. It needed the RMC conversion. Roar at SFDK is a decent GCI and was nowhere near as rough as The Rattler at Fiesta Texas.

Wow that's something I never thought about, every ride except for the kiddie coaster goes upside down. My friend wont ride anything that goes upside down, and I used to be one of those poeple too.
We just renewed our cp season passes today and got free fast lane plus tickets for next year! I can't wait to use them to ride Valravn on passholder day!

Cobra (which happened to be in the shot as you mentioned Roadrunner) is the other non inverting coaster in the park.
They also have Cobra, another Non-Inverting Kids coaster at the park. I actually enjoy the look of it, and I think it could be a really fun ride in the park.

Swift lucasben V2's twisty moment is tilted at a 45 degree angle, which is considered an inversion to most riders.
I'm sick of hearing you complain about how Roar shouldn't have been RMCed. We get it; you think other parks deserve it better, which might be true. But look at it this way: Gold Striker, a new GCI at California's Great America, just opened and is 1000x better than Roar. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom wanted a leg up on their competition, so it made perfect sense to update an "okay" coaster. Also, since SFDK is in California, it has LOTS of room to grow and attendance to get, especially in NorCal. SFDK and CGA are the only true amusement parks in Northern California, so everyone who lives there is going to go to either Six Flags or Great America. The Joker adds another world class thrill and another reason to go to Six Flags, so obviously it makes sense to build it there.
Also, it was extremely obnoxious to hear about how it looks like a "standard" RMC layout. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A STANDARD RMC LAYOUT! Yes, they may share some of the same elements, but each one is unique in its own way. Roar introduces the Step-Up Under Flip (first element after drop) and has a stall, a zero-g-roll, a curved drop, a breaking wave turn, and 15 airtime hills. While I understand it isn't as good as say Lightning Rod (no other roller coaster in the world is), it certainly seems like one of the best RMCs out there. To me it looks like another Wicked Cyclone.
Now I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinions and I don't want to come off as some annoyed fanboy but I did want to address how those things irritated me. I did agree with some of the points in the video such as how it sucks that they will no longer have a wooden roller coaster, but I was still mad about a couple of other things. Hopefully this coaster will turn out good and will be great for Six Flags and coaster fans everywhere.

I rode it 4 times on Friday. once in front twice in back and once in middle. the weakest parts to me was the stall and the double camel hump that's posted under said stall. I didn't feel much if any ejection from the stall so it's more like just hanging upside down for a second or two. Lot's of airtime, more so in the back however. On a near full train there's *big* airtime at the finish.
I like riding the Rock Mountain Construction roller coasters. Which is awesome ride. :-)
Why are rmc coasters considered as family coasters? I have a map of sfmm, and it says TC is a moderate thrill ride.

I guess they weren't expecting TC to be less intense than it was, and considering it only has two inversions and an average height it's clear to see why they did that. I think this one would also be considered a moderate thrill ride.

I completely agree with you, this RMC looks good and I like the colours of the rails and they have put a lot of elements into the layout but it feels weak in terms of height, speed and ride length. I feel like SFDK could have done a non-inverting transformation though because as you said, it was the only big coaster which didn't invert. Thanks for the video and could you maybe do a video on the new dark ride going into Thorpe Park because I'm waiting for some details to be released and I can't wait as it's the park I visit most often. I think that compared to all the other R.M.Cs, I would put this second to the bottom, above New Texas Giant, below Goliath. But I was just hoping that it'd be a little more relentless like Wicked Cyclone, Twisted Colossus, and Medusa: Steel Coaster. Meaning that I don't care if it doesn't go that fast, but I want it to have a constant pace that seems fast like with Wicked Cyclone. And I think the scariest part of the ride is trying to see if the train will make it over that last hop before the lift.
I expect Boss, GA Cyclone, and Monstre to be next. Maybe Great Adventure will get a custom one like Goliath.

I am actually sad and glad they got rid of roar. I am sad because I loved how fast it went, the layout, the drops, but I am glad they got rid of it because it was super bumpy and I could only ride it once without being I pain
Well, it's gonna get a lot slower. At 3 mph slower, twisted cyclone!.!. But still. It will be good for the park. Not matter how long and big it is, it will still be awesome. It will attract more people there, and i don't get the chance to ride an rmc close by that goes upside down. The closest one is dollywood, which I've rode, but it doesn't go upside down. So I'm pretty excited to feel it!.!.
Go to cga then. I don't think every ride there goes upside down. Especially when they are getting he hyper.! I'm excited to go next summer!.!.
Pet Paradise I wish we got a hyper but we got that pretty good RMC Raptor, maybe in a couple years we’ll get it, cedar fair is putting a lot more money into great America now so maybe we’ll get that hyper soon

I don't see why people hate on Wicked Cyclone sure it's not very tall and the end is pretty slow but the airtime hill are so tight that even at the end the ride still tries to throw you out of seat and this coaster looks like it'll do the same thing.

This looks like a 'family' RMC, which I think is a good thing. RMC should consider making brand new family wooden coasters, that aren't too tall or intense but still have good airtime and one or two inversions.
+Tommy Carr I think to consider it a family coaster it'd have to stay right side up the entire time. But a while back I saw a fan made R.M.C redo of the Racer at Kings Island and they designed a family designated coaster that looked cool. The title is I think Racer Reloaded but all it was on the video was sharpening the crests on the hills to provide more airtime, an added high five element before the turnarounds, banked turns on the turnaround, and a steeper drop. Although I don't believe it should be done to that coaster, I do think that's an interesting concept for R.M.C and other parks to look into, a family hybrid or topper track coaster.
I think family coasters can have inversions, most people would consider Revolution or Sooperdooperlooper family coasters, as well as Cheetah Hunt.
I wouldn't consider Cheetah Hunt one since it has multiple launches, but I guess I could consider some of the older Schwarzkopfs such as Sooperdooperlooper, Revolution, and Scorpion family coasters. But hearing Revolution gets me SUPER EXCITED FOR 2016 AND THE NEW TRAINS! YESSSS!
I am happy that they did not repaint the wood white. Sure If they did It would have that Joker feel but it probably would've looked kinda ugly

Rode it front, back, and row 6. Dueled every time. And I'm not the only one who thinks TC is weak. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's amazing (my number 9 of all time), but it just doesn't stack up against other RMCs

Yea. I wish Six Flags would have RMCed Roar at SFA first. Becuz SFA hasn't gotten a NEW coaster in a while but SFDK has. And SFA has Wild One to fall back one. But oh well. Great Video!
I hope the would RMC the roar at SFA first also because I live only 10 to 20 min from SFA and usually find myself going to Hershey or Kings Dominion because SFA hasn't had a new ride in a long time so I agree RMC the other roar

If Six flags is putting an rmc in every park, six flags st. louis needs to get The Boss redone. The ride is almost 4 minutes long already and is extremely painful. RMC could do wonders with that ride. look it up.
Cobra is another roller coaster in the park that has no inversions.

It kinda lacks a classic RMC layout. If you think of others like wicked cyclone or Twisted Colossus and compare it to this, it looks very different.

They should've turned Son of Beast at Kings Island into a RMC instead of taking it down. Don't get me wrong, Banshee is great but that would of been a killer RMC.

I don't get all the hate on this coaster, it's better than New Texas Giant, Storm Chaser and Outlaw run. I'd say it's right in the middle of the back just behind Goliath in the Rmc's

Man, I hope they get GCI to make another woodie. With the exception of Busch Gardens Williamsburg, you're park ain't complete without a woodie.

And it still looks better than Goliath though. Its still intense, but from the first drop the ride lasts 40 seconds to the brakes.
I hope in 2017 Six Flags makes the Boss at Six Flags St. Louis an RMC. It is a fun ride but VERY rough.

Yeah the Boss has probably one of the best layouts on the planet but it is very rough and RMC could make that their best coaster.

I honestly agree. A lot of them look like minimal effort was put in, basically just over banking turns with steel track and not much airtime nor inversions for what it is supposed to be. This "Joker" formerly "Roar" just needed a retracking, they just did this because they could. Now ones like Wicked Cyclone, or Twisted Colossus, those will be the ones people remember. Of this type I mean.

We DO have one of the tallest skycoasters in the world at 180 feet tall and the worlds tallest rock climbing wall... Ive done the skycoaster, but the wall... No... too scary...
This Coaster did not need the RMC make over. Its very basic and mediocre. It would have made more sense if they just had one custom built. Yet another disappointing year for the Six Flags chain. What they should have done was given the Boss the RMC. make over.
