The past 5 years or so I would cut my hair every year. We always make a joke about it ekhaya kodwa this was informative. I'm headed to the salon tomorrow for my chiskop. When the Lord had blessed me with money, I'll consult ', but for now I'm making the most with what I have.
So glad I watched this. I consulted a Dermatologist in 2012/13 and she said I have alopecia, she prescribed minoxidil which seemed to work for a month but then it stopped. The Dr I saw never gave this insightful information I’m hearing here. I then decided to stop trying anything to regrow my hair. I lost an entire Hope that the hair will ever grow, so I decided to go bald. I love the bald look. I feel beautiful. But recently I’ve been having the desire to grow my hair. So thank you. I hope it’s not too late, I will go see a Dermatologist and get a proper diagnosis.
I spoke to a lady friend of ours on sunday at church and she send me here, I am glad that I watched this, I am definitely going to see the demartologist tomorrow 😢
Dr Mpofu is amazing. She treated my husband back in the day. Thanks to her I fell in love with the pink lips because the medication my partner was taking made the lips nice and pink 😂. His skin was so beautiful. I respect her as a Dr. She knows her work.
Diagnosed a month ago now. I'm on treatment. It saddens me so much but I'm grateful for my Dermatologist and this video confirming that my Dr is doing the right thing. Thanks Gail
Gail I hope your well I have been following you for a long time and your story touched me because I have been suffering from this for a long time 8 years to be precise, I would cut my hair all the time, sometimes they would say it's the products I use, I shouldn't relax, it's genetics, my aunt even said that people with cruel hearts usually don't have hair😭. I lately researched and found out that I might have alopecia but I wanted to be sure so I chopped my hair again this year and now my hair started fading again. It's hard talking about this because of the feedback I would get. I'm super happy that there is someone giving me the courage to talk about this openly even though I can't do much about it because it's expensive seeing a good dermatologists and getting treatment. I'm just relieved that it's not so taboo.
Thank you for this video, how I wish I got to know about this years ago. I've been losing hair as early as 2008, tried everything in the book except going to the doctor. Now I'm at a point where I've given up on having my natural hair, i now wear wigs and I don't like wigs but I have limited options, tried shaving off my hair but it didn't look nice....you could actually see the patches. It is really a painful experience.....
Thank you soooo much Gail, you are the best. Seeing people like you come out and deal with real life issues that affect us helps a lot. It makes us search deep and learn to accept and love ourselves as well. I've struggled with my hair for as long as I can remember, my hair has never been thick enough or healthy. The worst part is that instead of looking for solutions, I've always tried to hide behind intense hairstyles, Id change my hair colour, do tight hairstyles (so I can look snatched). Now I think I need to start a healing journey, love myself and get help.
I think my mom has CCCA. I am definitely going to share this video. I have traction alopecia and I am guilty of over oiling as well as pulling my hair when I style . This is definitely informative
I wish this video was available years ago because my younger sister's alopecia started when she was 19 and we didn't know what to do. She is 25 now and it keeps getting worse. Maybe it's time for us to see a doctor because we know that it is genetic.. thank you sharing such needed content
This is so important! Thank you for this. The earlier you are diagnosed, the greater chance you have of keeping your hair. So many of our sisters and mothers are walking around with huge and permanent bald spots in the middle of their heads because they did not know any better. It doesn't have to be this way!
Thank you for kindly sharing your journey, as well as bringing in the informed opinion of Dr Mpofu… … that Saloon Shampoo with long sharp nails that roughly agitate the product into the scalp💆🏽♀️ 🚿 is one of the many reasons why I now look after my own and daughters’ hair at home, my styling skills are limited but at least I know we can all keep our skin intact and healthy hair .
Thanks for this video, very education. I have my appointment this wednesday. I had come to a point were I said I can't go on like this and needed some clarity. I have all sort of DIY's, different products and even to the extend of cutting my hair and now it's not growing at the rate it used to. My alopecia is on the sides of my head, the crown (the hair is thin) and also the hairline. I've done a bit of research on alopecia and was shocked that dermatologist are the ones to assist hence making the appointment. I hope that more women can take the next step and preserve their crowns
Hi Vanessa, back from the dr. The diagonsis was traction alopecia. She gave me injection after examining and a spray and ointment to anoint the affected areas. So her consultation is about R1800 , that is with the injection and medication or otherwise they charge the medical aid for the consult and injections. I'm happy though I had to endure pain on my head :). My dr is based in Centurion
Thank you Gail for creating the awareness around alopecia and including Dr Mpofu to educate us more about this condition. I’ve had it for over 10 years and I noticed it after I was in a car accident which led to theatre and extremely strong painkillers and other medication was used. I think the meds plus body trauma from accident caused it, I could be wrong but I know from both maternal and partenal families, it seems I’m the first case, so probably not inherited. Consulting a dermatologist plus treatment can be pricy but for those who can afford, it’s worth it. I guess for people who can’t afford private consultation rather seek help in public hospitals. This hair journey is daunting but worth doing. Thanks again Gail ❤️
Thank you Gail for sharing your journey. I started losing my hair in 2019.went to a number of Doctors. It turned out I had IBS. Started losing my hair. I was advised to quit dairy products which I loved so much, or any acid forming foods or drinks. I focused more on inner nutrition. I'm now using organic hair products and focused more on inner nutrition, taking amino capsules for hair plus omega 3s and Collagen power that is free from dairy, gluten. Exercising more. My hair follicles are back I no longer have sores on my hair. Challenge is my hair is taking longer to fully recover. I just need to be patient. So wish there was a quicker way to speed up the process. Fortunately I'm healed from IBS.
Wow Thank you so much for sharing your doctor with us. I have been attending a hair clinic with little progress for 2 years. Now I know what to do.This has affected my self esteem badly. Thank you
Thank you so much for sharing this Gail, I also went through the loss of hair after several attempts with my GP she decided to refer me to a dermatologist, though she didn’t diagnose me but I’m so glad she was able to help me. This session has really been an eye opener. Beside that I’ve always admired you❤️
This helps alot! Thank you Sis Gail. I've been to a dermatologist before(two years after I lost my hair in the center becauseIthoughtitwasjustpregnancy and hormones) and nothing helped and after hearing about scarring I'm afraid because I have scarring on my patch and it sometimes itches. I even lost my hairline on one side so the conversation with Dr Mphofu really helped and I will surely set up time to have an appointment with her. Looking forward to the next episode.
Yoh Gail, okare watseba that I've been struggling to decide on whether to completely cut my hair or "treat and allow regrowth" coz just like you I've had pixie for almost 15 years and recently decided to do those faux what what's. Long story short, my hairline receded 😢. I think these 2 episodes are a sign that I should start over, so tomorrow I'm going for the big chop. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to more episodes 😘
This information is useful, because I too have the hair loss problem and it started 2016,. I tried everything but nothing really helped, now I know I should see a doctor
Hi Gail, thank you for allowing yourself to be vulnerable so that other people can get help. You have a big heart 💞💞💞. Please advise on how I can get an appointment Dr Mpofu. I have been having problem with hair loss and itchy scalp on the crown since 2014.
Thanks Gail and Dr Mpofu.Im seeing a second Dermatologist this week after the first Dermatologist prescribed minoxidil and my scalp was bald and I gave up.
Gosh thank you soooo sooo much for this series. I've been experiencing some stunted growth and itch on my crown, yes I was worried but always brush it off. This has been so informative and I def should seek professional help. Hope for the best for you as well on your hair journey💜

Thank you very much for this information this is very enlightening I'm struggling with dandruff and tend to scratch it off my scalp and thus make it itchy and irritating and learning that thus causes further damage to hair growth
Thank you Gail for sharing, I think the biggest mistake we make is to self diagnose, my goodness😳. I am in the medical field and really guilty of this and it hasn't helped my hair loss, as I also have PCOS. I need to see Dr Mpofu, and stop the problem before it's too late. Thank you Gail, BTW short hair looks amazing on you!🤍💕🤍💕🌻
Thank you so much Gail for sharing your journey with us, quite enlightening as most women go through this in their little corners like it is a curse. I really appreciate this as I am starting to see the signs also...kindly share the Dr's contacts if possible.
Thank you so much Gail for sharing your story and helping us realise there is help out there🤗❤..A question would be a range in costs of treatment especially if a person is not on medical aid,and does medical aids cover such costs.
It can be costly, unfortunately, but usually only at the beginning of treatment. Once you’ve got it under control, it’s just maintenance to ensure that it doesn’t get bad again. Medical aids can sometimes reimburse, especially if it’s a “chronic condition”.
Oh my gosh, mine is worse so frustrated I have receding hairline, patches in the middle of my head I had to shave my hair coz it was getting worse. I can't braid my hair, do weaves coz I itch so bad that I can't even sleep. I wish I watched this video before I would have gone to a dermertologist instead I went to a trichologist. This journey is so hard
Go to public hospitals, they have dermatologists in private practice consult at the hospitals on certain days of the week. You will then be given the medication which you'd have to buy which is crazy expensive, even the Accutane used for acne together with sunscreen can be obtained from public hospitals.
Thanks for this episode. I was diagnosed with LPP which is another form of alopecia unfortunately i fell pregnant straight after realizing this and I couldn't start my medication. As your Doctor is describing CCCA am realizing that I can not ignore this as it will worsen . Thanks Gail for speaking about it. Our hair stylist need to be educated about pulling our hair less , not applying harsh chemicals and not applying a relaxer at a young age/ dye that is harsh. I have learnt the hard way sadly and have opted for hair style like yours going forward.
Thank you so much Gail I have the very same condition as yours I didn't know it a disease until you created this channel It so unfortunate that I can't afford to treat it cause am still a student How can I maintain up until am financially stable How my hair it so important to me this breaks my heart And to know that I can't even afford a wig
Thank you for sharing, I should take my daughter to dermatologist her hair doesn't grow up,she's always having hair loss to the points where I need to cut it and grow it,then after relaxing she just went bald, now I nolonger relaxing it just was but still she's having hair loss ,
Hi Gail can you please touch the topic of growing your hair once you've been diagnosed and on treatment. I was prescribed medication and shampoo and a topical spray but my hair growth is so slow.
Hey Gail 👋Firstly, thank you so much for this content that we need as black women. I just have a question right. I know that CCCA occurs at the center of hair. But can this be associated with the receding hairline that we see alot in black women? Especially worsened by tight braids etc? Thank you once again 💋
Ohhh hairline issues are FFA. Sorry, I posted this question before I got to the FFA part. I have hairline issues and I notice that I itch so badly with fresh braids. So I'm resorting to other styles other than braids.
That could also be traction alopecia, which is cause by the braid pressure on the follicles. We can never know for sure until a professional confirms it
Hi Gail. Is there a point of no return? Where CCCA can no longer be treated? I've had it for so long...was never able to see a professional, now I'm worried I may never get my hair back. Beautiful content by the way🙂🙏🏿
I have a severe scalp problem, it's itchy and painful, lm losing hair, shampoos irritates my scalp and some hair foods and oils they make the situation worse.l wish to see this doctor.
Sis they have dermatologist in public hospitals like Helen Joseph and bara… please go there and find out. They will redirect to the right place where they have dermatologists
You are still one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. Your bone structure and facial features are unmatched💕🙌
Miss South Africa & Miss Universe caliber 🤞🏽effortless beauty. I love her personality as well
Oh wow. 🤗 Very kind. Thank you. 🙏🏾
You look amazing Gail! I totally agree! Effortless beauty!🤍🌻
I used to have a huge crush on her husband, then they got married and I felt he couldn't do any better 🙈

Dr Mpofu is amazing! Cleared my hormonal acne in less than a year. You're in good hands Gail 😉❤️
🙌🏾❤️
I am suffering from that. How do I get hold of Dr Mpofu. Please help
I mean suffering with hormonal acne
Thank you Gail and Dr. Mpofu, It makes me happy to see black women supporting one another.

I need to see a dermatologist I've been delaying it & have opted to cut my hair bald since last year🙈...Thanks for the topic😘
I've long self diagnosed myself with Alopecia based on how much iv been losing hair so this was very informative. I will definitely go to the doctor

Hi Gail can you please touch the topic of growing your hair once you've been diagnosed and on treatment. I was prescribed medication and shampoo and a topical spray but my hair growth is so slow.
Thank you, this was very informative 🙏

@@gailmabalane5624 where is part 3. I see your hair has improved lot.
❤️
That could also be traction alopecia, which is cause by the braid pressure on the follicles. We can never know for sure until a professional confirms it
Hi Gail. Is there a point of no return? Where CCCA can no longer be treated? I've had it for so long...was never able to see a professional, now I'm worried I may never get my hair back.
Beautiful content by the way🙂🙏🏿
