twincharge turbo/centrifugal works if you use the centrifugal supercharger as the large compressor in a compound setup, use a very small turbo for quick spool degisned to run out of compressor flow, and use the higher flow of the centrifugal to help the small turbo keep up by operating at lower pressure ratios. still has lag but better than a bigger single turbo.
@@AutomationGame It's probably not the best way to do it, but it might be more compact/better packaging, likely cheaper to manufacture, and surely quicker to assemble when compared to compound turbos.
No, if that was the case then manufacturers would have done that, and there has never been a single production engine using that setup you're proposing. Compound turbos are used for Diesel engines, and twincharging has been done both with turbo first and supercharger first for petrol cars. :)
@@AutomationGame I was inspired by a procharger kit for the ecoboost Mustang, I dont know of any centrifugal supercharged engines at all. Also, it's a videogame where you can make your fantasy dream cars ;)
@@AutomationGame Lol. In all seriousness, though, it's awesome what you folks have done here, and I can't wait to see what kinds of things we can make with it (and some more developer playthroughs?). I've been waiting for this update for so long and I'm glad it's here. First thing I'm going to do is making a twin charged 1000cc I4 for my motorcycle project.
God damn this looks amazing. I've been desperate for the superchargers for a while now. Feedback for another part of the update, but the lamda = 1 title might want to be revisited. Whilst it does describe exactly what is happening, it doesn't seem the easiest to understand. Had I not watched the videos I'd likely be more than a little confused, and that's likely to be true of friends using the game to learn engines as a whole. The improvements to the calculations also seem great additions. I assume diesels and/or 2 strokes are a long way off if they are ever coming? Part of me hopes once the current calculations are really hammered down it would make it relatively simple to get the diesels at least in order, but I also know it's not as simple as just throwing numbers into the same equation and calling it good. Or is it more likely to be a game of 4-stroke gasoline engines with no foreseeable (the important word) intention to expand the scope beyond that?
Oj! Haven't seen you in the comments for a while! Lots to play around with indeed. Setting up a nice supercharger tune is and feels quite different to doing that for a turbo. Compound will keep you busy too... Yeah, the lambda = 1 title is for the emissions optimization slider that previously basically had no indication as to what it is. I couldn't figure out a better description for it and hope the cryptic title (to 99.9% of people) will make then click the description to have a read - or look at the fuel map to see its effects. The tricky bit is that we do have different fuel types that have AFRs that are wildly different and so far I've not come up with a better title! Maybe someone figures out something more appropriate during open beta. ':) Yeah, the FAQ is still accurate on those (link in description). Diesels are viable but lots of work and not planned to be in Automation 1.0, but may come as a DLC after that. The calculations for Diesels would have to be quite a bit different due to how they rely on self-ignition and that point varies depending on the combustion chamber environment. We joke that we could add Diesel on 1. April as the RON 25 fuel type it is and say we've implemented Diesels... just for people to blow up their engines with knock. :P Most people think that's how easy it is to be implemented. The much slower flame front speed is somewhat easy to implement with a fudged fall-off in combustion efficiency towards higher RPM. Still would likely be ~18 months of work all up, with a whole new engine designer for Diesels. So not something we'd want to do just yet! Cheers!
I was wondering how in depth this would be and how overboard we would be allowed to go, this is going to be REALLY fun to mess with. I've had many different pipe dreams about various compound setups that no smart person would try in the real world, and this is definitely going to let me try most of those out even if it is in a game. I hope I can make a completely unusable triple compound turbo twin charged setup xD
32:15: "Roots is the way to go then, just a blower. Centrifugal would be... Damn stupid, because you already have a turbo." Thank you for giving me inspiration on what to do when Al Rima finally comes out! I love to be damn stupid!
I know one thing I'd like to see for the turbos would be the ability to tune the Trim and A/R ratio, as well as the Inducer and Exducer sizes separately for both the Turbine and Compressor. I've tried making IRL turbos in this game, and I can get close with the current options that are available, but not exact. Maybe have it like an advanced mode toggle for more experienced people.
In the parameterization those are not individually broken up, so that is not possible. It is all a big fudge for their effects, because otherwise you'd need a full simulation of the airflow through it, which a) I'm not capable of making and b) wouldn't benefit the average player at all. :) Cheers!
Thanks! In real life I am in the process of supercharging an engine that has 0 off the shelf parts support. (Toyota 5MGE). I've been playing Automation for years. Creating this supercharged monstrosity at least virtually would be so cool!
In the previous dev update Killrob mentioned a change to the strength of the bottom end (to cope with the larger displacements, especially in the early game), so how is that going? Are we going to hear about it in the next dev update? Because early game internals really need a buff, especially for large engines.
So excited for this! Couple of questions: 1) Will we be able to compound more than 2 turbos together? I want to live my dream of having an engine bay that is 50% turbo and 50% engine, I might need a 4 turbo compound system for this. 2) Could you run twincharged as a compound setup? You mention disabling the supercharger after we hit some pressure limit, but couldn't we do the same thing as we do with the compound turbo and just continue to compress air that has already been compressed?
Neither will be possible, no. We had to draw the line somewhere for complexity's sake and that line is two stages - they can either both be turbochargers, or a supercharger and a turbocharger!
I really love this updates and the way you are making the game as realistic as possibile. Are you planning to improve the sounds of the engines (new variables, new parts) like Titanium exhaust or adding compressor surge with the beautiful "stutututu" sound?
Our hands are tied with regard to our engine sound system for the foreseeable future, unfortunately. Exhaust materials have very little to do with the sound, despite what many people say, and you really, really do not want compressor surge in your turbocharger. ;)
is it possible to build a 0.75L V8 Quad-Nitro Super Turbo, Twin Electric Multiaxial Flow, Twin Direct Injection w/ a secondary backup Quadrojet Blow-thru CV
@AutomationGame um... What exactly you mean by single first turbo engine? you know! For me I first introduced to this ideas by watching a video from driving for answers channel(the channel engineering explained does have video's on this too). After that I got fascinated by the idea of being able to increase the performance of the engine by just injecting water in it! if you place the injector in the airway after the air filter you can cool the incoming air by vaporizing the water and that cooler air is more dense ceasing less likely hood of knock happening in the combustion chamber Wich means tighter ignition timing and slightly higher boost pressures! So yeah I really like the idea of this. you can even increase the power output of NA engines too ( if your knock limited somehow ) and because you're cooling the incoming air you can increase the AFR ratios without being worried about knock so you get better gas mileage too.
The Oldsmobile Jetfire in 60s had that... which was a very bad idea xD "It used a special tank filled with ‘rocket fluid’, a mix of methyl alcohol and water. The system needed to spray it into the intake air stream to cool it and keep combustion temperatures lower."
I know it would be a lot of work and probably not something for this update, but adding different ignition type would be cool. I.e. magnato, points, hei, waste spark, and coil on pug.
Extremely interesting video and the update is looking great! I never realised the intercooler could be disabled either - is this a sensible option at all when using turbos?
you guys should also add a way to decide where the intake and exhaust manifolds are setup somehow! such as a hot v8 setup or maybe with something like a datsun a10 engine from the cherry where it has the exhaust and intake on the same side of the motor. can not wait for the new update though.
It might not look like it from the outside, but the intake/exhaust/piping system is by far the most complicated art in all of Automation; there's just no way to open that up to players sadly.
@AutomationGame well. My goal wouldn't be to open it up for players to do whatever they want. Im talking like. You guys could impliment some sort of set in stone system for the stuff. So you can have like 2 port intake manifolds with 2 port exhaust manifolds that are on the same side of the motor like the old ford motors and stuff like that. Idk. It was a idea i had cause i always try to make real engines in the game and some things arent all the way perfectly up to par like that yet. Either way thank you for considering my idea even reading my comment.
4:05 so judging from the model, we are talking about the "modern" implementation of the roots? the old style is much bigger yes? or do i imagine thing? 30:15 for inline 4, i would like to try my best to build a twincharge with one centrifugal and one turbo 32:22 aww, killrob called my idea damn stupid XD
Centrifugal or screw will just not be available on twincharging :) don't want to lead people down the wrong track that just doesn't work (and means lots of extra work on our side) :D

Hol' up. A 75.7L V16? Is this the start of Automation: The Ship Company Tycoon Game? Can't wait to get my hands on that beauty and create some monumentally stupid things. *evil laughter*
Apologies if it's answered... but Do we have a date when we might be able to try it?.. even if in Beta? (Also AI-generation doesn't pre-select engine parts, still have to go through and select them all then go back through again to select the *actual* part's I'll use which is slow).
As stated at the start of the video: end of the year! Not sure what you mean with the AI not selecting engine parts? It does generate full engines and cars with engines. Are you running into some kind of bug there? Works for me.
@@AutomationGame Awesome. And I mean Main menu> Engine designer> new engine family..... Would love it to just (by default) have the top option in every category pre-selected.
will this update be a sort of 'final' version of most of the engine calculations? not that i mind, but i've made the same engines for some of my cars multiple times as the engine designer has progressed over the years. i've always wondered when the deepest internal calculations will finally reach a 'good enough' state.
We are getting very close to feature-complete for the Car and Engine Designers. Following the Terso Update - the one following the Al-Rilma Update - we will reach that milestone!
I wouldn't call what we have a driving simulation, but keep an eye out for the coming LDUs as there will be some info in there as to how that side of the game is going to be developed going forward.
A bit off topic for this video, but will I be able to make cammed up v8s in the future? would love to make some old muscle cars sounds good with heavy cam lope.
Big cam V8s are in the game already, but I think you mean their sound :) that is not something we'll be able to make happen with how the sound system works at the moment!
If Diesels ever make it in, I think the engine designer might finally be complete. I have a feeling that would be very hard and lengthy to implement because gas/petrol and diesel engines are very different.
You would be correct in that assumption, yes. If we were to drop literally everything we are working on right now and devote our efforts solely to diesel engines, it would take 18-24 months before we had something to show for our efforts.
automation you have a great futur. but can you fix the carburettor meating the intake manifold it float , and somme new type like quadrajet, termoquad ect... is it possible ?
We've fixed countless graphical glitches in the art for the upcoming release! As for different carb visual models, we are in the process of differentiating the various carb visual models as it is, but once we get to the point where each option has its own visuals, that's where we're going to stop. Making all the variations of carburetor would be a very time-consuming process, with very little bang for the time our artists would spend on it!

From factory, absolutely! :)
@@AutomationGame Of course, you play as "from factory" in Automation, not as "from an aftermarket kit producer"
Looks good! I can't wait to make supercharged muscle cars, or a twin-charged Group B car!
Go for it!
Lancia Delta S4 reference. Noice
twincharge turbo/centrifugal works if you use the centrifugal supercharger as the large compressor in a compound setup,
use a very small turbo for quick spool degisned to run out of compressor flow, and use the higher flow of the centrifugal to help the small turbo keep up by operating at lower pressure ratios.
still has lag but better than a bigger single turbo.
Yes, that would work switching roles :) although not quite as well as with a blower in the intended role.
@@AutomationGame I was inspired by a procharger kit for the ecoboost Mustang,
I dont know of any centrifugal supercharged engines at all.
Also, it's a videogame where you can make your fantasy dream cars ;)
It is also a videogame that at some point is supposed to be finished :D and it is based off of IRL tech. Cheers!
Time to see turbos for every cylinder kind of crazy vids
There is no setup where there is a 1:1 ratio though xD
@AutomationGame yet. There is none yet. Will be crazy if such was implemented
Can't wait for 75 liter compound turbo engines. We going to space with this one!
Need a long enough ramp! :D Also, the engine calcs said it weight 1300 kg.
@@AutomationGame Lol. In all seriousness, though, it's awesome what you folks have done here, and I can't wait to see what kinds of things we can make with it (and some more developer playthroughs?).
I'm a bit more than halfway through a x100 campaign that I just can't bring myself to finish with this right around the corner haha
@@AutomationGame heavier than many sports cars and compact cars 😂
I like
i love the sound track.. i hope we get more in the future (:
It is beautiful indeed! :)
Excited for this! Been making a Koenigsegg CC8S replica, so Im glad to know superchargers are coming soon.
I've been waiting for this update for so long and I'm glad it's here. First thing I'm going to do is making a twin charged 1000cc I4 for my motorcycle project.
Sounds like a good starting point :)
17:04 i didn't know metal straws had such great flow.
32:14 Turbocharger plus procharger so you get a very odd ball twin turbo setup.
The moment this update comes out, the "most powerful ..." series HP numbers will skyrocket
That is likely :)
21:00 I would call it sequential turbine, parallel compressor.
The turbines are in parallel too though? They just get fed sequentially.
Yeah, the FAQ is still accurate on those (link in description).
Cheers!
Love it! Cant wait for the positive displacement superchargers.
They are fun to play with! Very different to set up compared to a turbo. :)
GrogTv is gonna go wild with this one
saying that as if he doesn't already go wild :P
I was wondering how in depth this would be and how overboard we would be allowed to go, this is going to be REALLY fun to mess with. I've had many different pipe dreams about various compound setups that no smart person would try in the real world, and this is definitely going to let me try most of those out even if it is in a game.
I hope I can make a completely unusable triple compound turbo twin charged setup xD
There definitely is room for experimentation! :P
32:15: "Roots is the way to go then, just a blower. Centrifugal would be... Damn stupid, because you already have a turbo."
Thank you for giving me inspiration on what to do when Al Rima finally comes out! I love to be damn stupid!
We won't give you that option though because it is tons of extra work for stupid :P not a good thing for us.
Cant wait for superchargers and twinchargers 🔥🔥 keep it up
Cheers for that! :)
:) Cheers!
Looks fun and exciting! Thanks for sharing this update! 🙂👍
Glad you enjoyed it! Lots of new tech to explore in this update once it is out :)
Cant wait for the supercharger update.
Not that much longer, compared to the 12 years prior xD
Thanks! In real life I am in the process of supercharging an engine that has 0 off the shelf parts support. (Toyota 5MGE). I've been playing Automation for years. Creating this supercharged monstrosity at least virtually would be so cool!
Neat!
You're right, it was confusing.....yet somehow I got it!
Everything is switched somehow xD
In the previous dev update Killrob mentioned a change to the strength of the bottom end (to cope with the larger displacements, especially in the early game), so how is that going? Are we going to hear about it in the next dev update? Because early game internals really need a buff, especially for large engines.
Yeah, I'll talk about that in one of the next updates as I've now finished those calculations and they are ready to be implemented :)
So excited for this! Couple of questions:
1) Will we be able to compound more than 2 turbos together?
Exhaust materials have very little to do with the sound, despite what many people say, and you really, really do not want compressor surge in your turbocharger. ;)
@AutomationGame yeah you are right...
With all this new stuff i will finally be able to build a twincharged v12💀💀💀
I have been looking forward to making small displacement twin charge engines or just supercharged engines for a while
I can't wait to use that centrifugal charger!
They are a bit weird to use :) but yeah, only way to get big boost with a supercharger.
is it possible to build a 0.75L V8 Quad-Nitro Super Turbo, Twin Electric Multiaxial Flow, Twin Direct Injection w/ a secondary backup Quadrojet Blow-thru CV
Of course! Just need a little imagination :P
Purely an art department kind of question but will roots supercharger with carbs have that ridiculous intake with flaps as an available option?
The performance intake version of them might, I have not seen those myself yet :)
Thanks for the update👍🏻
can you guys work on the water injection next!
I love to see it in Automation!
Nah, that is not on the list of things :) was it used by more than that single first turbo engine?
I’ve been waiting for this for years finally please… ”a little bit”😂
It'll come when it's ready! :D
Finally, my mediocre pickup truck will have a bad supercharger logo and 20 more horsepower.
Haha, sounds about right :D without intercooler
So excited for this. Twin Charge all the things!!!
💪
Just MGUH left and this game will be a temple of turbocharging :)
You know twin charging could work Just like a mechanical MGU-H right?
Public beta when? 👉🏻👈🏻🥺
Probably at the end of this year.
Just as stated at the start of the video.
Can't wait to recreate Lancia Delta's S4 Group B engine
recreate all the fun cars!
I know it would be a lot of work and probably not something for this update, but adding different ignition type would be cool. I.e. magnato, points, hei, waste spark, and coil on pug.
That seems like something you'd simulate by using the quality slider and imagining changing the ignition type :D
180 stroke and bore.. Oh my...
Chunky!
@@AutomationGameBiggest Chungus
Can't wait to make a $100k racing oriented 3bar compound turbo'd 1L I3.
More forced induction than engine? Sounds about right!
Damn i really wanted to get upto 12/71 roots style superchargers for some pushrod big block shenanigans.
The maximum size is still up for discussion :) it should all scale pretty well. What size is that in cc?
@AutomationGame it's a 8521cc blower style supercharger
@@AutomationGame also is their a possibility to get the old school style blower hats. It's old school hot rod time
Extremely interesting video and the update is looking great! I never realised the intercooler could be disabled either - is this a sensible option at all when using turbos?
If you have a tiny engine bay and you only want to run low boost, then it is a valid choice, yes!
Or if you're going for realism with early early turbo builds such as the 1962 I think oldsmobile jetfire or the chevy corvair
you guys should also add a way to decide where the intake and exhaust manifolds are setup somehow!
such as a hot v8 setup or maybe with something like a datsun a10 engine from the cherry where it has the exhaust and intake on the same side of the motor. can not wait for the new update though.
30:15 for inline 4, i would like to try my best to build a twincharge with one centrifugal and one turbo
32:22 aww, killrob called my idea damn stupid XD
Centrifugal or screw will just not be available on twincharging :) don't want to lead people down the wrong track that just doesn't work (and means lots of extra work on our side) :D
@@AutomationGame well, then that would make sense.
is this Screw+Turbo not available on all engine configuration or did you mean the inline4?
@AutomationGame My mechanic has a twin supercharged (roots blower feeding into another with methanol injection) 454 Chev Holden HQ one tonner burnout car
I look forward to when you get around to adding Anti-Lag devices, I think that will really help my sales in the Gasmean Family Budget Cars market lmao
Haha yeah, it will cater to a very specific subsection of the Family market... the 16-year-old in particular xD
Hol' up. A 75.7L V16? Is this the start of Automation: The Ship Company Tycoon Game?
Can't wait to get my hands on that beauty and create some monumentally stupid things. *evil laughter*
Someone will have to make a boat body mod :P
i can't wait to use this update
thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Automation
You're welcome!
This is what we want! haha
Following the Terso Update - the one following the Al-Rilma Update - we will reach that milestone!
are you gonna add 2 speed superchargers? like the one on the rolls royce merlin, that would be a cool addition
Haha no, we do not plan to run our car simulation at 20000 feet. That is an aircraft-only feature.
@@AutomationGame lol, worth a shot, well I know what i'm doing when al rilma comes out, copyright neutral hemi
Automation already has car driving simulation built in, any chance we can expect to get like a proper race simulation?
I wouldn't call what we have a driving simulation, but keep an eye out for the coming LDUs as there will be some info in there as to how that side of the game is going to be developed going forward.
A bit off topic for this video, but will I be able to make cammed up v8s in the future? would love to make some old muscle cars sounds good with heavy cam lope.
Big cam V8s are in the game already, but I think you mean their sound :) that is not something we'll be able to make happen with how the sound system works at the moment!
Yessir my 3.6l vs twincharged buggy is coming closer and closer😊😊
@@AutomationGame i mean new sound of a quadrajet can be really good ! (New sound in gerenal)
@@AutomationGame but i know, it just for (old people) love muscle car alot en i am with them. anyways i am really hype for suprcharger turbo ect great work !!!!

I've been looking forward to this update the same way I've been looking forward to the next elder scrolls, gta and stalker
We playing with the big boys now! xD
this is gonna be flipping awesome
It certainly will be! :)
We finally lived to see the day Automation having superchargers. So much has come and gone since then. Crazy dream.
*and sequential turbos to please the 2JZ fanboys too. Crazy
Lots of water has flown down the river since they were announced xD Cheers!
I have a question! WIll you ever implement a y-pipe exhaust system for inline engined cars to make it look like they have "dual" exhaust?
We currently have no plans for that, no.
beautiful game, worth every cent
Thanks for the kind words!
Will we be able to change the switchover RPM for Stage 1 and Stage 2 aspiration? Seems like an important thing to be able to change.
For sequential, yes, you can do that. It is not a thing for the compound setup though, that happens naturally.
What would be the equivalent slider for a tuning company fitting a smaller supercharger pulley?
That is the equivalent of using a larger gearing (pulley) ratio.
@AutomationGame Got it, thanks for the clarification
