    To add: Another point to bring up about her being a self-love icon is the song Maria. You might just immediately think Maria = I love myself, but actually it's Maria = please love yourself. Maria is a song that actually talked about how Maria hated herself because of how other people treated her. That's why she wrote this song to herself, asking Maria to love herself more because that's what she deserves. I think that's why it became anthemic. She, herself, is also struggling to come to love herself completely. That's why the song became such a hit because it resonated to all the other people who's going through the same thing.

    I personally think she got breast implants and can't keep thinking about it after this last comeback. It's just too obvious.
    I think you can preach body positivity as long as you admit the work you had done. I don't see anything wrong with surgery, but I do think it's bad when celebrities deny it and make everyone believe they look that great naturally.

      @@zizzle995 I've been curious about why no one is making a fuss about it. She gets so much hate, but this seems to have gone under the radar.
      I'm all for doing what makes you feel better and confident. I think with the weight she lost she probably felt insecure about it and decided to get some work done.
      I just hope she doesn't deny it if someone asks because I hate when celebrities do that. Nothing wrong with admitting it.

      @@LinaCT25 if hwasa or mamamoo came back with a maria-level hit then the usual tsunami of haters would've no doubt been on her. by her standards 2022 was a relatively low-profile year. tbh i don't see a predictable opportunity for her to either confirm or deny it (she's not super interactive with fans online and no way some interviewer is gonna come out and ask her that lol) so for the time being ig this is gonna stay on the down-low.

    I have friends in LA. Attractive, down-to-earth, grounded friends. They're mortals, not celebrities. They gave in and had some work done, I discovered recently. It's almost impossible to be surrounded by "gorgeous" and not try to be "gorgeous" yourself. I can't even imagine the pressures if that is your career/industry, especially for women and girls.

  • @myBquest
    @myBquest ปีที่แล้ว +145

    As a person that has had a nose job, I can tell you that people that go through plastic surgery for esthetic purposes are definitely not at the top of the "love yourself" preach.
    We do love ourselves, but we changed stuff for a reason and one reason only.
    Doesn't matter how much they try to convince you they love themselves just they way they are, it is not true. My friends who got something done agreed with me last time we talked.
    You see, I changed my nose because I hated it, as simple as that. I was bullied as a teenager, received comments that didn't ask for, and was the "ugly" sister to my family. I couldn't even let other people take pictures of me from the side, just believe me it was honestly really ugly.
    And now that almost a year has passed, I love how it looks, but I still think of other things that I don't necessarily like about myself and what I could do to improve them. Everyone, EVERYONE right after one surgery gets those kind of thoughts, even if we don't get other procedures at the end.
    I can't say that I don't love myself because of course I feel like I do, but my own values wouldn't let me practice a career where my motto is to "love yourself" while I'm constantly receiving beauty treatments or procedures that change my appearance and I'm not honest about them with the people that support my business.
    Anyway, plastic surgery saved my self esteem, but nowadays I try not to buy or follow anything from artists that preach to us about self-love while at the surgeon's office (and either hide or straight up deny them).

      You worded that very nice. I see that you had plastic surgery yourself also. Self love does not mean you have to be natural. If you are natural and love yourself that’s fine. If you want to get something don’t because you know it’ll make u happier that’s fine too. Glad to hear that you love your nose now. 🤍

    hwasa's work is nicely done. at least she didn't do any drastic changes to herself. but the botox is unnecessary rlly bc she rlly doesn't look that old...
    anyways, i will always find it kind of funny some ppl have dismissed these changes as a result of "growing up"... all these lies abt puberty bringing these changes have truly distorted everybody's views about what actually happens to your facial features when u grow up.
    this is how we get young ppl expecting puberty to make them as pretty as their idols, only to be disappointed.

    • @chonasaur
      @chonasaur 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      One thing that comes to mind regarding your insight was that, especially at the beginning, Hwasa apart from the body shape and facial features issues, a common comment on her was also "she looks like a mother already" or "she looks like she's married already" if you recall. They often played it off as a funny thing during interviews but I think that definitely still affected her down the line on "looking young/er." Not saying that IS the reason, but it is possible that somehow she feels the need to look "younger" because she's always perceived as the older-looking one esp out of Mamamoo.

      You can increase your cup size after reaching a new metabolism level due to ageing. It can even increase one to three sizes especially when your genetics favor storing fat in those two areas over other areas in the body 😅. Usually when your body has such fat storage favoring, you also have a much higher risk developing breast cancer too😅. Not sure whether that is or isn't the case with her though 🤷🏾‍♀️

    Self love is quite literally what is called. SELF love. I get that some or most people want to know EVERYTHING idols do so they can take inspiration into their own lives, or just feel like they should know it all, but they don’t owe us anything. Self love is up to each individual. We must take care of ourselves and whatever it is that we do, should be done to make us happy and/or for our own mental health. Hwasa has been criticized and bullied for her looks throughout all of her career so no one has the right to tell her what she should and shouldn’t do regarding plastic surgery. It’s her body. Self love does not equal being all natural and having NO plastic surgery. If you compare your body to these idols to make you feel better or worse about yourself, you should be working on your OWN self love. Be kind to yourself and others. 💙💙💙

    I'm not sure why people think that if she claims to be her own standard, that it somehow has to be completely different than any other standard. Her standard of beauty is a personal one. And it's only for her. She doesn't ask others to live to hers, and doesn't want to be held to someone else's. And if standards overlap, so what, it doesn't mean that it isn't legitimate. That somehow they are being disingenuous. I myself had cosmetic dentistry done when I was younger. Not because I was trying to impress anyone else. I had no issues attracting partners. I just didn't like the look of my teeth in the mirror. So I changed that. Doesn't mean I can't love myself. Love my physical appearance just because I had it modified.
    Ironically, by saying that unless she is unchanged, that she is exactly the way she was made that she can't legitimately claim she loves her body. How nice of you people to set a standard for her to meet in order to gain your approval. Why not just accept the message for what it is, and forget about shooting the messenger.

    Wow, this vide was more insightful than I thought it would be. I thought this would be like those other "cosmetic surgery analysis" videos that would basically just say the artist got everything done and you should hate them for it. I appreciate how you worded your sentences in the video in a way that didn't rag on the artist.
    My thoughts on the topic:
    - Honestly, the work Hwasa has done to her face isn't really that noticeable until you scrutinize it. I am a Moomoo myself, and I didn't notice 90% of the face things you pointed out, mainly because I think she didn't get them drastically modified, just enough to enhance what she already had. The only one thing I consciously noticed before this video was the chest one. I believe we first saw it during the Somebody! music video with Loco.
    - I feel like apart from that concert clip where she shared how she got rejected for being chubby, it was really the rest of us who put her in the pedestal of a "self-love icon." Not saying that she isn't, as we have seen how her success became inspiration for all other people who look up to her that has similar complexion, similar face, or just a similar situation where their physique was the reason of rejection and discrimination.
    Despite everything, I think it's quite noticeable how Hwasa still struggled a lot with the KPOP idols' dieting culture, crash dieting for comebacks that lead them to binge eating. I think having the place of one of the self-love icons in the industry, from what it looks like it might have also burdened her as there were probably times she still didn't love herself, her body, her skin completely. Which I think is natural to go through such ups and downs, especially in her line of work where "body positivity" is celebrated but at the same time you still NEED to be skinny when you appear on TV. You know what I mean?
    - People who have done cosmetic modifications/enhancements advocating self-love is a *gray area* in my opinion. There are purists/absolutists who believe you wouldn't need to go through such physical changes manually if you truly loved yourself. However, we cannot just dismiss the fact that body dysmorphia is a real thing, whether you have the BDD mental disorder, or just genuinely feel like a part of your body doesn't make you feel 100% you. To me, people who undergo cosmetic surgery TO LOOK like other people (to look more caucasian, American, or even Korean as Asian fishing is also now a thing) those people I would feel weird about calling them advocates of self-love. However for cases like Hwasa, who seems to have done such changes to enhance things they already have, who seems to be just more confident in their own skin now with changes they chose themselves FOR themselves, I think there's no harm in still looking up to her and to them as your models of self-love.

      I really appreciate your insight here! You’ve brought up so many interesting points!! I totally agree with your comment about the dangers of placing someone on a pedestal for their body. being known so widely for her body/ figure has undoubtably impacted hwasa’s body- and self-image! Even when praising her, we are still drawing attention to her appearance, and under such scrutiny there is no way she wouldn’t be affected. “”Body positivity" is celebrated but at the same time you still NEED to be skinny when you appear on TV” - this really highlights the industry’s overarching opinion regarding body positivity. There’s still a far way to go until we see k-pop truly embracing different faces and bodies. honestly, I believe hwasa most likely would not have had any cosmetic work if she wasn’t a k-pop star. I also believe that female k-pop artists are always boxed into a certain group, and often have cosmetic surgery to fulfill this prescribed label. In hwasa’s case, being quickly categorized as “sexy” may partially explain some of her surgical choices.
      Thank you again for your comment! I truly enjoyed reading your thoughts and I hope to hear more of your insight in future videos/posts😊

    Maybe this is a controversial opinion, but I believe if it makes you happy then there's no problem. Of course there's a difference between having plastic surgery due to health issues and purely cosmetic reasons, but I don't think there's any harm in getting plastic surgery if it makes you feel more confident and happy about yourself. Although there should be concern if it gets obsessive or excessive, and impossible beauty standards does have an obvious impact on influential groups like teenagers or in this case kpop idols, is it really that harmful if doing the procedure makes someone happier and more confident in themselves

    i think it's fairly obvious that she's had recent work done on her chest, perhaps as a result of being hyper-sexualized by the public and wanting to uphold that image.
    however, i'm not shaming anyone's potential procedures bc i don't believe that little tweaks here and there are truly antithetical to the idea of self-love. i believe everyone has their own individual aesthetic based on their natural features and wanting to "enhance" it is something i can understand. to me, it's the people who clearly want to look like someone they're not that raise concern (often the ones who repeatedly get things done and show perpetual dissatisfaction with themselves).
    to me, hwasa doesn't fit in this category. other than aging she's had the same face since debut and has always seemed confident with who she is despite the avalanche of criticism. when she wrote maria she became a symbol of loving not just your body but also who you are as a person, going from a B to a D cup doesn't change that lol.

    Self-love doesn't mean you need to stay or keep your look the way you look. Even the most confident people you think of still undergo their own self-criticism to themseleve whether physical or not. It's not being a hypocrite, it's being human. Why do we change our hairstyles or put on makeup or oyher clothes if we already "love ourselves"? Maybe its because we WANT to do those because it makes us feel better, it makes us feel ourselves. This applies the same to plastic surgery. I think people need to realize that plastic surgery isn't all that bad unless it harms you. Self-love doesn't always have to reflect through physical means.

    • @nehalilisays
      @nehalilisays ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You can't really compare surgery to makeup or hairstyles though. Plastic surgery is often irreversible and it comes with medical risks such as allergies, post-surgery depression, infection, necrosis, severe pain, severe scarring, unsatisfying results that require follow-up surgeries and in some cases even death (especially BBLs and jaw reconstruction are dangerous).

      @@nehalilisays I dont think you understand the point that i was trying to say. I was talking about the choices people make to make them feel better whether surgery or not. I was talking about self love and how people can choose to change a certain way they look because they want to. Almost every kpop idol went through this anyway. I'm also pretty sure they know the risks before getting into something that can make or break your appearance and confidence. Some people don't spontaneously do it anyway. That's far from what I was saying though and I do agree with you.
