  • A very challenging piece, especially when performing it live with band, and Steven did a great job. Conducting the Army Band was Capt. David C. Cole (Director of Music, The Band of H.M. Royal Marines).
The piece was written in 1906:

Finest performance of the Boccalari I’ve heard. Thanks.

Yeah, and it is a killer piece! I complimented Steven after the performance, and we both agreed that the past few minutes are very tough. Lots of notes, not many breaks!

I asked Roy Newsome in 1995 who was the best euphonium player in the world, and he told me straight out, Steven Mead. After that l brought Steven out for an Australian tour. Just before he came out he told me that he had been practising 7 hours per day so he would have no excuses for making any mistakes; I thought he was joking, but he was not. The whole night he didn't make one single mistakes and played some of the most difficult pieces. Yes, he plays the Fantasia di Concerto amazingly well and was such a standout player in his hey day both in bands and as a soloist. .

The best execution in the world of this piece, for me. But this is live, I have the version recorded in the studio, and it's another level!
In the final part, Steven use the triple tonguing on the same note and don't play actual notes write on the part.
Way back in 2007, I heard Steven play it live, and actually doing the last part as written, was awesome!
The undisputed number one in the world.
