@@Keepitgoingjay have you by any chance read her climate bill? While I do want clean water and air, too fast too soon the average American cannot keep up with it. I mean, good for you if you can afford a $40-70,000 vehicle and thousands on a charger for your house and the sky high electric bill that comes along with it. But she wants everything fossil fuel free by 2030, and new houses that people build will no longer be able to use gas or oil. You will also have to change your boiler to be electric as well. These are very expensive costs that will affect housing and transportation, as well as your electric bill.
The batteries on electric vehicles are lithium based. It takes 500,000 gallons of water to mine 1 ton of lithium. 1 ton of lithium will get you 115 car batteries. Those things are also $20,000 to replace. They also have been disrespectful and racist towards Native Americans by bulldozing over their burial grounds to mine lithium.
We don't have sufficient environmental data when it comes to the impact of mining. There's more data on fracking than there is on lithium mining. Have you seen what lithium mines look like? Google a picture. Where they mine they also divert and pollute water from farmers in South America. We haven't fully studied the full extent of the environmental impact of contaminating their water supply.
You're still using fossil fuel to charge the car, unless you're using solar panels which contain toxic substances like cadmium. The batteries and the solar panels are non recyclable and they end up in landfills which they will further contaminate. That'll be a another $20,000 for replacement, and the same thing will happen the next 100,000 miles.
We need something better than what they're pushing, in the meantime go with what's already there, work on a more eco friendly product (they were talking about potentially using iron instead to make them more eco friendly, I'm not as up to speed on that, but I would like them to further research what they can do with that and recycling and being more sustainable), get that market ready, mass produce it, and gently wean off fossil fuels so it's not drastic and financially painful for the poor and no working class who can't afford drastic: measures like MH is planning, ones that aren't even up to environmental standards in the first place.
Use fossil fuels for now, especially where people are financially struggling, do more research on environmentally friendly recyclable options, get that ready to go, make sure it's more eco friendly than this crap, and engineer and mass produce it here in this country, and have it be more reliable than batteries and solar panels we have now. It's cruel to have poor, elderly, and sick dealing with rolling blackouts like California when demand is too high, especially in hot summers and cold winters..
At a gradual pace over the course of 20 years or so we can wean off of both, but for now keeping costs down is important. You wouldn't want to bust up your foot when you're trying to climb the stairs to actual clean energy.
