    I love my Drum Dial, have had it for years. I work a lot of gigs that don't want a drummer banging away tuning the drums. I know my settings so i can sit at a table quietly and tune up. Keeps both bar managers and sound guys happy. Just this last weekend i got a nice remark from one of our regular sound guys saying how he loves how my drums are always in tune. Smarter, not harder.

    Drum dial took my already awesome 6 piece natural maple drums to the Zen level. They sound great. I recommed the Drum Dial for all drummers at all levels. And their CEO, Steve graciously sent me a set of replacement tension indicators free. So, I know that Drum Dial is a great company to work with because they are interested in my success as a drummer.

    If I tune my 10", 12", and 16" toms to have the same tension on both batter and resonant heads, will the size of the toms give me a natural interval in between?
    Also, you tuned the resonant head 3 units lower on the 13" to give the 12" and 13" an interval of a 3rd....does that only hold true if the drums are 1" apart?

  • @DrumDial
    @DrumDial  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Tuning the 13" to 75 for both the top and bottom head would result in a step apart from the 12". We were demonstrating a 3rd apart between the 2 drums. We are also using a thick (2 ply 14 ml) head for the batter and a thinner (single ply 10 ml) head for the bottom resonant side. If we matched the heads for both the top batter and bottom resonant, for example both heads a 2 ply 14 ml, this would be the same tone top and bottom. This set up would give the most sustain and very little dissonance.

    The software is our own. You can get a similar program called "Audacity" . We use a spectrum analyzer and spectrum analysis to build the filters.

    Hello! I recently got a DrumDial but it had no edge gauge and sometimes when I use it, the dial will give me a false reading saying that the head is at 60 or 70 when my tension rods are visibly loose. Is this normal?
    Secondly, I’m buying Evans Coated G2 Batter heads for my toms that are 10, 12, and 14 inches. The tuning chart has sections for 2 ply heads and sections for coated heads, but not for Coated 2 ply heads like the ones I’m getting. Do you have any suggestions as to what setting I should tune them to?
    Thirdly, will the DrumDial work on a 20 inch Aquarian Super Kick 2 since it has a thick dampening ring on the edge of it?
    And finally, what setting would you recommend for a 14 year inch Evans Clear 500 Snare Reso head (5 ply) since its pretty thick compared to the average snare Reso head?
    I know this was a lot of questions but thank you so much!

    • @DrumDial
      @DrumDial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      60's on the DrumDial are very low settings, so the tension rods could be loose.
      The tuning chart 2 ply would also work for coated 2 ply.
      10" 76 top batter 76 bottom resonant
      12" 75 top batter 75 bottom resonant
      14" 74 top batter 74 bottom resonant
      For the 20" bass drum, tune to the inside of the foam ring. See our bass drum tuning video in the series.:
      th-cam.com/video/oSocW_IqlYE/w-d-xo.html
      14" snare top batter 89 and tune the bottom resonant ( Evans Clear 500 Snare Reso head ) to 82. If you tune the 500 much tighter than 85, the head will stretch.
      See our calibration video to be sure your tuner is calibrated:

    Can you explain why, on the 13" tom, if you tuned top and bottom to 75 would give a result that was a tone apart? Why wouldn't it be the same tone? Wouldn't having the same tone top and bottom be more desirable, less dissonant?

    • @DrumDial
      @DrumDial  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ard3443 Make sure that your tuner is calibrated while sitting on a hard flat surface, glass etc. Do not overtighten your drum. 70 is a fairly loose setting for most drums and your tuner may not be calibrated properly, giving you a low reading.

    Recommendations fort setting for playing a two-tom kit in a Modern Worship Setting? Like Elevation Worship or Hillsong? Instead of using the high and low tom, I use the med tom with the low since "the sound" for this genre is a fatter sound. So what would be a good difference in pitch and tightenings for that?

    • @DrumDial
      @DrumDial  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Spencer Perilloux Tune all of the marching tenors to the same tension. Start at 90. The maximum tension is 96. A setting of 94 gives excellent stick response with a nice even tuning across the range of the drums. The two 6's can be tuned the same or tune one slightly higher.

    • @DrumDial
      @DrumDial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      74 / 74 is a good mid range to lower tuning. Gels will help with ringing. Another good setting for that floor tom is 74 top batter 76 bottom resonant. Slightly higher in pitch with less sustain. Lowering the bottom head will have the opposite effect.

    • @DrumDial
      @DrumDial  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mark, excellent question. The 16" floor tom with that head combination had the best feel, stick response and midrange sound tuned to 74 top and bottom. This gave us the D#2. Keeping the same feel, the 13" gave us the G2. The depth of the 12" tom we built was a little shallow. To keep the same feel the 3rd was augmented to a B. On a standard 12x9 tom we would have gotten the A#. Ideally, we could have used 12", 14", 16" toms, but the 13" is so common on many sets that we wanted to include it as well.

    Hi DrumDial - I have toms 12x9 and 16x16. According to your recommendations I should tune them like:
    12" - 75 top 75 reso
    16 - 74 both top/reso
    But I like to tune reso higher than top, something about major 3rd. Should I add +1 to DrumDial reading for reso (change 74 to 75 for reso in case of 16"). Is my understanding correct ?

    • @DrumDial
      @DrumDial  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bartosz Dolewski Excellent question! If you have a thinner resonant head than your batter head, tuning to the same tension will give you about a 3rd apart. You are correct to add +1 to the resonant for a major 3rd and also have less sustain.

Sizes are 13, 14, 16, 18 and 24 x 14 kick. I go for the open Roger Taylor( Queen ) sound. Low tunings. I also like tuning in 3rds. Could you please tell me what you think the best settings would be? Also, when I buy the DrumDial, is there any information included as to what settings to use for tuning to a particular note? For example, I like the Bonham snare tone, so I tune my batter to G sharp and the reso slightly higher. Is this possible with DrumDial? I will be very grateful to you. Many thanks. Jem )

      Make the interval between the toms an additional lower step (4th) by reducing by 1 tic mark on your DrumDial. You may need to increase your upper tom settings if the 16" and 18" toms sound very thin or toneless by increasing these settings by 2 or 3 tic marks for all of the toms.

    So you want to have both batter and resonant heads tuned at the exact same tension? I have my batter heads at 75 and my resonant heads at 74 for all toms, 85 and 84 for snare (not 100% sure, been a few days since I played on my set), and 75-70 for the bass drum. Do they have to be tuned in the same tension, or is it more of a preference in sound?

    • @DrumDial
      @DrumDial  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ARegularPanda Excellent question. A step apart (75-74 etc.) is OK also. This will give slightly more sustain. The top and bottom heads do not have to be tuned to the same tension. We recommend the same tensions for a thicker batter head and a thinner resonant head combination as a very good starting point (midrange of the drum).

    Just got a Drum Dial, and have a question. I actually enjoyed the sound of my toms prior to picking up the Drum Dial. But apparently I have historically kept them a lot lower than you recommend. Putting the drum Dial on them at my old settings showed around 70 batter and 68 resonant. When I tried tuning my 16" floor Tom to 75/70 (the lowest you recommend), I hated how it sounded. So high pitched...sounded like a bongo or something.
    So am I doing something severely wrong here? Like...am I using this thing wrong or something and just getting inaccurate numbers (I did calibrate it on glass)? Or do I just like my drums tuned way lower, and that's ok?

    • @DrumDial
      @DrumDial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Low settings can work well also. It is Ok to tune to the lower settings. Be sure to match your gauge readings for the clearest tone and keep the low settings that sound good for your drums.

    Ive got a quick question. I notice with most tuners like tune bot or Itune for example it gives you two readings(HZ).One in the middle of the head, and then it gives a different reading when you measure at each lug!
    So for example, on the tune bot, Say you hit the middle of the drum, and get a reading of 75HZ, when you actually measure each lug individually it actually gives you a much higher reading at like 140HZ. 140HZ may not be the exact number when it's at 75HZ in the middle, but just for example sake. It is something like that though.
    So what Im confused about with drum dial is, if each lug reads 75HZ (vs the middle reading 75HZ with Tune Bot, but each lug reading 140HZ) is 75HZ on each lug with Drum Dial the equivalent of each lug on Tune Bot reading 140HZ?
    Know what I mean? Because if each lug is reading 140HZ on Tune Bot, but the middle(overall is reading 75HZ), then is that the same as Drum Dial reading 75Hz, but at all the lugs, and its just giving you the overall tympanic pressure but at the lugs instead of the Center of the drum like on Tune Bot?

    • @DrumDial
      @DrumDial  ปีที่แล้ว

      James, DrumDial reads Timpanic pressure (a force / distance measurement). It does not read Hertz or frequency measurements. Those are two completely different measurements. Like temperature and time.

      DrumDial works very well on mesh heads / Roland V-drums , Remo Silent Stroke batter heads any ply thickness. Very good starting points are:
      snare set to 75-80, toms set to 65-70, and Bass set to 70. The diameter does not matter. We shoot for consistent rebound for the tom heads.

      Thank you Jonathan! The Hydraulic heads are tuned just like standard drum heads and to similar tensions. Hydraulics naturally have a deeper tone with less sustain. Good starting tensions for toms are 76 top and bottom for 8-10 inch diameter drums, 75 top and bottom for 12-14 inch diameter drums and 74 top and bottom for 16-18 inch diameter drums.

All the other lugs were 71-ish but this one lug was a few points higher but loose.. doesnt make sense?! they are 4 months old drums too. Can you think of any idea why that one wants to be a bugger? thanks!

    • @DrumDial
      @DrumDial  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      A loose tension rod as you described is usually corrected by tuning in a circular pattern after seating the drum head. After seating the drum head in the normal criss cross pattern, tune in small increments in a circular pattern one lug after the next up to your desired tension. A bad bearing edge, hoop or bad drum head can also cause this. See our troubleshooting video here for complete details:

    thanks! Jon

    • @DrumDial
      @DrumDial  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jonathan Reddish
      The resonant head is usually thinner than the top batter head. A thin head tuned to the same tension as the batter will naturally have a higher pitch. If you want a shorter decay and an even higher resonant pitch, tune the head one tic mark higher for each step you would like above your desired pitch.

      The DrumDial numbers read in Timpanic Pressure, this is similar to foot pounds or Newton Centimeters as related to a force measurement. DrumDial measures the actual drum head tension, not tension rod torque.

    If I understand correctly, then when tuning toms that are 2 inches apart, like 10 and 12 inch toms, simply set the batter and Reso to same settings and let the toms do there natural notes. Is this a whole step or a 3rd?? But when there is only one inch difference, on the larger Tom you should tune the Reso -3 of the batter setting and create tuning at 1/3rd. Yes??? No??? What do you do when you have 12" and 13" high toms and a 14" floor tom with a 16" and a 18"????

    • @DrumDial
      @DrumDial  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Danny, you are correct 2" diameter apart is a 3rd when tuned to the same settings. It's only a step between a 12" and 13" (to create the third, drop the resonant head by 3.
      To continue 3rds for the larger toms from the 13" (14", 16" and 18") tune the top batters to 74 and the bottom resonants to 71. We usually only see a kit with either a 13" or a 14", but not usually both. It is OK to tune all of the heads the same, but the 13" tom will only be a step apart from the 12" and the 14" for a more chromatic downward sound progression similar to concert tom settings.
      We usually suggest tuning without a 13" this way:
      12" 75 top batter 75 bottom resonant
      14" 74 top batter 74 bottom resonant
      16" 74 top batter 74 bottom resonant
      18" 74 top batter 74 bottom resonant
      When using concert toms 10, 11,12, 13, 14,15,16 we tune all to 76 and have a single step between each drum.

    • @Bourbon-Canted-Ky-Windage
      @Bourbon-Canted-Ky-Windage 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      With this tuning, what would you suggest for an 18x24 kick?

    • @DrumDial
      @DrumDial  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      18x24 72 kick batter 70 front resonant. We suggest tuning to the bass drum's lowest setting without wrinkles in the heads or hardware rattle. This setting is always a very good starting point to work up or down from.

    • @Bourbon-Canted-Ky-Windage
      @Bourbon-Canted-Ky-Windage 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Without the 13, tuning "normal," tune the 18x24 to 72-72?
      Thank you for breaking this down to the nuts and bolts. I fully understand the drum dial tuning. I bet this thread helped some others, too!

    • @DrumDial
      @DrumDial  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, 18x24 tune to 72-72 to continue with the same progression. Also, OK to tune to the lowest setting without wrinkling or hardware rattles. A good number for most bass drums is 72 kick batter and 70 front resonant.

      Rotate the Roto Toms to their lowest setting and set each tuning point to 74. The goal is to get the drum in tune with itself and then rotate to your required pitches.

      Tune to the same or similar tension at the midrange for the best stick response and sound. For example 76 (top and bottom) for the high tom, 75 for the second, 75 for the third and 74 for the lowest tom.

    I am not sure if this question even has anything to do with tuning but I really want an answer.
    How does one go about tuning toms and/or floor Tom to basically sound like a THUMP rather than having an actual pitch, or tone.

      +DrumDial I agree with those settings. its a good standard to follow. However as a metal drummer, I prefer a punchier tone with faster decay. This I tune my resonent head slightly tighter. for example on a 12' tom I'll go 75 for the batter and 76-77 for the reso. On my kick 72 for the batter and 75 for the reso. You get a punchy tone, less overtones and a faster decay. All things considered these measurements may not work for everyone depending on their drums and setup. Just my two cents.

They are pretty spot on and a good guide to work from to customize your own settings. And you hit the nail on the head. I do mostly studio Metal work. My aforementioned technique is very effective in the studio. All of my reso heads are tuned slightly tighter. But my Batter heads are almost identical to your recommended settings.
