    Hi Pete,
Pete French here, I enjoyed listening to your review on Atomic Rooster, My personal favourite Albums are the "Death Walks Behind You" Album and obviously "The In Hearing Of " Album, I missed John Canns guitar on "In Hearing Of", Vincent took a lot of Johns guitar tracks off the Album in the final mix which led to the unfortunate argument and break up between them, and sadly a lot of good lead guitar tracks were lost, but Atomic Rooster are back on the road with myself on vocals, Steve Bolton on guitar, a exceptional keyboard player called Adrian Gautrey , with Shug on Bass, and Paul Everett on drums, and I am also still working with my band Leaf Hound, I like your show, all the best,

Pete, Paul Hammond was a very good friend of my dad and my family. He was a really nice guy and a fab drummer. I spent lots of time with him in his later years and was with him two days before he passed. Thank you for this man! Paul really pushed me as a young drummer back then. I miss him very much!

May be worth checking out my post and the links before spending any money.
As young teenagers (always short of money) in the early 1970s, BBC Radio1 was where many of us discovered new bands. Atomic Rooster, Groundhogs, Family, Curved Air, Argent and Stray all performed live 1971-72. Few of them went on to become global success stories but much of their music still remains strong and relevant. From that group - Stray are still touring after 50 years+. Sadly, Atomic Rooster fared less well. Often overlooked and blighted by tragedy - RIP Vincent Crane (organ), Paul Hammond (drums), John Cann (guitar) - I have fond memories of this band and of making my first mono recordings of their ‘In Concert’ shows to cassette tape from the radio.
Talented musicians, particularly Paul Hammond who contributed so significantly to their unique sound. The first three albums are certainly well worth exploring. ‘In Hearing Of’ (with its early Roger Dean artwork) is still my favourite.
Some Atomic Rooster highlights for those interested - (these have been posted twice previously on SoT in the past year - so a few extras have been added for those who have already accessed the links).

Came to Atomic Rooster via the Carl Palmer/ELP connection and was absolutely blown away by Vince Crane's keyboard work on that first album, the bands cover of John Mayall's "Broken Wings" is still one of my favorite things the band has done. There is a whole new interest in the band these days mainly due to the stoner rock scene that is still bubbling (quite successfully) just beneath the rock mainstream.

I am a huge fan of Vincent Crane. He might not be as technical as a Keith Emerson, but in his own right pretty great in his writing and arranging, including strings and horns. The Crazy World of Arthur Brown album is as much or more the genius of Crane as it was Brown. My rankings are exactly the same as Pete's are. Those top 3 are all killer albums.I like Headline News a bit more than Pete, but it was really more of a Vincent Crane solo album, as he did almost all of the vocals and had a number of guest musicians.

    Hello from sunny U.k.!
I’m 66 now, and saw Atomic Rooster when I was 16 in a
tiny club in Chester England, called quantways look it up.
Really old venue, built around 1200 just reopened as
a live venue again after40 years being closed.
Smack in the middle of ancient shops that still trade today!
Got into the venue too early,Rooster were in there doing a sound check
They jammed for about a quarter of an hour had a drink then left until the show.
Don’t remember who the drummer was, but Palmer was well gone by then.
Something about them I’ve always liked, small venue, a stage no higher than a foot.
Low ceiling up close, like someone’s living room fantastic!
I saw budgie there as well, but I missed the following I was too young to get in!
They were vinegar joe! Judas Priest,Uriah heep, Early fleetwood mac,
Thin lizzy, and loads more, these bands played there very early in their
Careers with one or two albums recorded so it was no big deal at the time.
Living 45 min drive from Manchester and Liverpool, over the years
I’ve seen em all, U.S. and british rock and prog bands, but the
Rooster gig I will not forget!
Watching Crane play really close was captivating!
Great band, a very sad loss!
    Take care,our numbers are dwindling!

Never did catch Rooster live, but ventured out to see Hard Stuff (Paul Hammond, John (Du) Cann and John Gustafson (bass) at Loughborough Uni. some time in the '70's. Am a big, big fan of Paul Hammond - vastly underrated drummer...

I own three albums. The self-titled, Death Walks Behind You and Made in England. And that's the exact order of how I like them. I plan on getting more and I don't wanna stream any albums until I buy them. I get how Death Walks Behind You gets all the love. But for me there is an odd charm to the first album that I adore. It's just a great audio time capsule of the time. It's dated, but in a good way. Plus, I'm a big Carl Palmer fan.

I discovered atomic rooster in the mid 70s and was hooked for life. Loved this band. My brother HATED them so much. One of my birthday gifts from him many years ago with a postit note on it read, "the best of atomic rooster". It was a 45rpm record. Cracked me up. Too bad he didn't live long enough to watch this video!
Well done! Loved it. Now a request. Stray dogs who I believe recorded for manticore records, and the great band Dixie dregs with Steve Morse!! Thanks again for another great video!!😀

After leaving Atomic Rooster after their third album John DuCann and Paul Hammond formed Bullet with John Gustafson, formerly of Quartermass and Harry Shaw formerly of Curiosty Shoppe. they toured as Bullet in the Autumn of 1971 supporting Deep Purple on their Fireball tour.
They then changed their name to Hardstuff, cos of a name clash and finally released their debut album Bulletproof on Purple Records, Harry Shaw had left by then, but sings on quite a few of the tracks, but was never credited, in around 2010, the album was remastered with John DuCann.
Harry Shaw - vocals (uncredited) on tracks 3, 5, 6 & 10. To add to the confusion the album was also released under the band name Bullet and called Entrance To Hell with extra tracks and a better running order in around 2010, on the cover is Paul Hammond, John Gustafson and John DuCann also known as Cann. There is a photo of them sat down on the back, which is cropped as it also included Harry Shaw. I seen Atomic Rooster in 1970, they played at a local cinema in Monmouth (home of Rockfield Studios) I then seen DuCann and Hammond, still playing his large silver drum kit on the Deep Purple Tour a year later. The Entrance To Hell album is definitely worth checking out. "Jay Time" was covered in 2011 by American rock band White Denim.
Looking forward to you reviewing some Groundhog albums sometime, in particular Thank Christ For the Bomb and the superb Split album and those 3 Pink Fairies album from the 1970's.

Hi Pete, I pretty much agree with your ratings of all the albums. However, I think its worth noting that it looks like you have the German version of Nice n' Greasy. The UK version has 2 different tracks and is a little more rocking than the one you have. The light instrumental "Moods" is replaced by the Johnny Mandala written funk-rock workout, "Goodbye Planet Earth" which is all guitar except for Vincent's bass line (played on the Hammond). Meanwhile, Chris Farlowe's straight rock n' roll/blues tune "What You Gonna Do" is replaced by the somewhat sinister, proggy "Satan's Wheel". I think this version of the album is stronger. However, I believe most of the recent reissues have all 4 songs included. I also want to add that, except for the first album, almost all the Bass lines were played by Vincent using Hammond Organ Bass pedals or simply the left hand side of the lower Hammond keyboard. Cheers!

You love it..ala Deep Purple and all that is god like in their world to you. Everything you love about that sound(Hammond), I can't stand, why, hmmm, many reasons, but, you like what you like period. And I agree totally with you. I have got some great ideas from you, or inspiration to revisit some great stuff. Mostly, Kansas, Leftoverture, That is amazing..I can't believe I have not listened to that in 20 years, so thankyou!! Love the channel, just not the Hammond Organ, just not the best Organ I know of. Still trying to open my eyes to Europe, not getting it yet, it is heavier, yes, lyrically?? ALso kudos, Queensryche new stuff, just great!!! Mileage obviously varies but I love Made In England and Nice n' Greasy. Crane was exploring a "heavy soul" sound on both and to these ears it was a success. Chris Farlowe's voice might be an acquired taste but man he had some industrial strength pipes! One of rock's best odes to blow (only bettered by Sabbath's Snowblind) is the unhinged Goodbye Planet Earth from the Greasy set--"Keep your nose on the track, ain't no lookin' back" indeed.

A buddy of mine bought “Death Walks Behind You” and “In Hearing Of” and we all really liked them. In 1973, my friend went on a fishing trip to Canada with his uncle and cousins. He came back from vacation and tells us that he and his cousin went to concert : Savoy Brown w/Atomic Rooster. He tells us the guy who played Danny Partridge from the Partridge Family is singing with the band. His older cousin swore it was Tiny Tim. Either way, his was supposed to be somebody. It was Chris Farlowe. They both commented that he ate sandwiches through the entire set and was a “goon”.
