- In 1865, following the end of the Civil War, Union leaders gathered a group of Black ministers in Georgia. They decided that newly freed enslaved families could claim up to 40 acres of land. Almost 160 years later, against the backdrop of national reparations discussions, Joie Chen visits Savannah to hear the history of this famously broken promise.

It’s not just the government that owes us, but many corporations that are still in existence today, benefited from slavery as well.

so many well said comments and think about this is the land buildable and if so, what for accorrding to that county or city department of planning and zoning? Does the land have to rezoned to built single family homes? Does that involve going before a rezoning board and a application? What are the fees? Unless a family has developers and builders in the family, what could the use of the land?

The slave owners got paid for the loss of slaves and some of their descendants are still suing the government for reparations. But when black descendants of slaves even mention reparations everyone has a problem with it. The nerve of that woman to downgrade the value.

Which slave owners got paid? I'm a lay historian and never once have I ever come across any document that provided compensation for the slaves that were emancipated. I'm truly interested to see such document(s), and history.
Education about building wealth , and long term financial stability. Japanese and other cultures got reparations. The Indians own casinos and maybe pay taxes, I haven't researched it in a while but I do know that they were not paying taxes.🤔

My grandmother was sold from South Carolina to Alabama and she always told us Lincoln wanted the north to win the war therefore he freed the slaves and when it was time to give out the 40 acres and a mule we were considered property not citizens she died at a 103 I miss her knowledge but I remember Lincoln said all citizen would receive 40 acres and a mule we were considered property therefore we got nothing

As far as reparations are concerned, this is the first video in which I completely agree... It's all about lineage. In the South, those blacks who were enslaved had full rights. South Carolina is my direct line of descent...

The report missed the fact that the Lincoln/Johnson administration was a dual party ticket. Lincoln was a Republican and his VP, Johnson, was a Democrat.

I am a conservative and not for reparations whatsoever, BUT having just learned about '40 acres and a mule' being a real promise that was made, I believe it ought to be upheld and to any descendants of those combatants who fought under that promise the land ought be allocated by today's government.

The land is NOT the governments to sell. How can you sell something that is not rightfully yours??? If you purchase the land you're only the caretaker of the land, that's why when you purchase land you will get a deed and not a title. A deed is not a instrument of ownership but falls within the grounds being the caretaker... A title is a receipt of ownership not a deed. If the land is yours why would you still pay taxes on it? Read a while back some Euro explorer wrote in his dairy that “the natives of the new world looked like the Queen of Sheba people”. Africa & Latin America were once one land mass. The reason we don't have our 40 acres is because we haven't made a claim to anything we haven't said what belongs to us. That's what we have to do. I now say what i want and what belongs to me the land that belongs to me and my ancestors. I think each black American should be given there land back 3 million dollars a free college educations ,car vouchers. Up to 6 generation from slavery. We all have to get together and stake claim to our land and our rights as citizens of this land. I moved from the southern u.s.a to the western u.s.a and I have encountered way more racist here then I ever did in the south. 850k is a good start, 40 acres, no property taxes, student loan debt forgiveness, and free tuition. That's what I call REPARATIONS.
I've been saying this for years. I'd pay property taxes tho. I like water and energy and paved roads. I'd substitute that for leaving us alone.
This was good. My only take away is that we should know that a lot of us were already here and not brought over on slave ships. Or even were slaves. A lot of us got our land and rights taken away during the process of Americas formation. The paper genocide of the US census counted us out. Literally. There’s no way that the nations and established leadership that was here already got killed off through what they call thanksgiving. That was one incident that paints the narrative that the people just went away. But the brown, tan and yellow people that were already here is still us. From the beginning, the vast majority of Americans always opposed African slavery. Hundreds of thousands of Americans died in the war that ended slavery. It seems only right and fair for these descendants of these freed slaves to pool their money and gift each family of any Union soldier 40 acres and a Lexus. Those are the people who earned it. Taxing someone's family who had a family member fight and die for the freedom of the slave to pay reparations for the slavery they died ending is an absurd obscenity. But here we are, the people who ended most of the slavery on the planet are now supposed to pay for ending it.
