It runs along the lines of what my lawyer told me during my divorce when trying to get some of my things back (lost everything), "you can pay me to fight for your now old stuff back, or you can rebuy what you want later". Pay a ton to move everything or off load most and keep what you need, the epic garage sale idea to lighten the load is wise!
And that’s the truth Truth Teller!!! Forget the junk. Take the irreplaceable items and a few things to make it comfortable for a few weeks or so and be done with it. I got better stuff here anyway. Thanks for watching!
Life saver! I have been drained searching van lines companies until I go back to Ubox. So great to see such a thorough video sharing your experience and yeah relief my concern in so many ways.
@@toothlessgimp all went very smoothly! We moved during the dry period, so didn't have any issues with rain damage. All items arrived intact and the boxes arrived in time. 🙂
FYI if you don't close the cover correctly it's not keeping out the weather. Also, it got wet on your property because those boxes go straight to an indoor warehouse and then onto an enclosed trailer for shipping.
They didn’t get wet at my house. I would pass by the facility and they would still have them outside for days before putting them inside the facility. While they deliver it to another state it would go on a truck the whole way getting wet if it rained. We always secured our stuff.
Thank you for this video. I am trying to decide between pods and u-box, and pod seems nice but it needs 12' and I have a little less than that (maybe it will be okay). And, glad you said "pare down" that is a good reminder for me. And really, thank you for the insurance tip!!!! PS you just got a new subscriber because you made a great video - no messing around, just great info!!!.
Simon thank you so much! So happy I could help some people with this. It was such an ordeal I thought it’d be a good idea to make a video of things we wish we would have known before moving. Congrats on the move!
Our U-Boxes are made of steel. They are 4x8 feet - but they only have one size. Pods have multiple sizes but for us, the cost was 3x that of U-Boxes for our house.
So helpful. I'm getting ready to move from Ft. Lauderdale to Ocala, FL and am pondering renting a truck or using the U-Boxes (which I didn't know existed until this video. I only knew about Pods). This has been a lot of work. I can't imagine moving to another state! Thanks for the tips and I'll be checking out some of your other videos.
@@par379 I did, and from start to finish everything was great ... they dropped off the U-boxes on the right date and time, pickup was the same. Shipped them up North for me and delivered and picked them up from my new location just when they said they would. I highly recommend the boxes. The Uhaul boxes came from the Pompano Beach Uhaul location and everyone in that office was great!!
Thanks for the informative video. I am moving from AZ to Atlanta GA. This is my first long distance move. In my living room I have that much space to mark area using masking tape! I don't know how practical it would be! Let's see.
Hi! Congrats on the move! Use the vertical space as much as possible. Get rid of what you can because it’s so expensive to move it makes more sense sometimes to just buy new items. Welcome to the South!
@@OurClassicHome Thanks for your tip. I try to get rid of sooooo many things, but still the items that I use for my craft and painting is hard to let go! We are not taking any furniture except m husband's hospital electric bed, our bedrooms dresser with mirror and a side table, We are in 2 minds if to take our queen bed headboard foot board and the frame and buy the new mattress/box spring set over there. I have listed all boxes fiving them number and which box goes in which room. I have my paintings packed and books of my husband's interests. As these are his personal collection, even though everything is available online, I am afraid that he might not find a particular book when he needs for reference. He does want to get rid of them but I am rather not ready! :-D I have good enough time to pack and rethink just in case I have to exclude adjusting in the U-Box, I will mark those items with a different color so while loading we have that option. That’s awesome! That’s why I created the video there were a lot of surprises along the way for us so we wanted to get the info out there for others. Congrats on the move!
Curious why you ended up moving twice in such a short period of time. We are actually moving _out_ of Florida in the next few weeks and considering U-Boxes and other options for similar reasons - our house won't be ready for about 5-6 months (if things go well). We are moving to Colorado Springs so we can have easy access to skiing in the winters and a more moderate climate than Orlando. Florida is great as long as you can tolerate the heat and humidity in the warmer months - but the winters are glorious (as long as you don't miss winter sports). For a 5-bedroom house - we were quoted $16,000+ from PODs (3 large containers + 1 smaller one). I know they are better but this is basically professional mover territory - so I could see spending just a bit more to not have the self-move hassle. UBox was under $6k (10 Uboxes) even when factoring in delivery fees on both ends - so I was hoping they would be a decent option. I'm covered through my homeowners' policy for storage, so I'm planning to opt out of the insurance. I also like the fact that I can just tack on extra boxes as needed - as long as we ship them at the same time. We are in the process of getting rid of a bunch of stuff (haven't done a proper clean-out in 20+ years), so let's see how many boxes we actually need.
Wow Jason now that’s a move! Hope it all goes as planned. As our story goes we had our house in Lehigh Acres for sale for 2 years and no bites. As soon as the pandemic hit everyone wanted our house and so off we were to a bigger and better house but in Northern Mississippi after a while we felt like we were missing many FL family gatherings and moments so I looked into selling our house not expecting much since we had just moved in. With the renovations we did (and still had a lot to go!) we were floored to find out it was worth triple. We sold the house in 24 hrs and bought a house CASH in Florida. Turned out to be a great investment and we spent most of the pandemic in the beautiful woods all alone and it was glorious! Glad to be back though with heat and all! Enjoy your skiing!
@@OurClassicHome That's brilliant. Watch out for the rising insurance costs - mine nearly doubled over the last 18 months since my last company left the state. It's starting to level out now, thankfully. I'm still ahead when you consider no state income tax and I will miss that.
Thank you for your video! I live in an apartment complex and im not sure where to put the box since they said they have to pick up following day. do you think the size of it will fit in my parking space?
Yes I'm pretty sure they will fit in a parking space but please check with your apartment manager just in case. Also call UBOX and ask for dimensions just in case.
Hi, thanks for your video! I'm planning a cross country move in July and looking at PODS and Uboxes. When you say the water got in around the door, how far into the box did things get wet?
Hi! Appreciate this video! I have a couch that is roughly 7’9” in length, 3 seater couch. Your couch looks pretty large as well. I worry that a couch my size will be pushing it as the length listed for the ubox is 7’11”. My question is, do you know the length of your couch? Do you think we will be okay with 2” of leeway?
Hi! Would you say that a 5 by 8 box is big enough for a small one bedroom? It will be mostly for electronics and music collection. Your reply would by helpful.
I think so! It’s pretty big. Just make sure you make vertical walls of stuff after you put in your furniture. Use the vertical space as much as possible. Thanks for watching!

It is different for every single move. shippers charge different rates and they change per shipment. Uhaul doesn't control that.
