This is still my favorite game of all time really an amazing game. This ending battle music still plays in my head randomly!!! The trick to final boss is one bot two human one morpher, all with tanks, tanks will block the smasher attacks. and the specific morphling an imp type guy will do 800dmg per attack with his special attack (5 stock) Love it. Awesome sound for the final boss back in the day
I couldnt beat this game back when i was in 8th grade, (1998) i got into it again about 3 years ago, and finally beat it, no sweat. I started it up on a ROM Last night, and had it beat by morning :). BEST game boy game ever made.
I love how this doesn't use any like special animations to convey a phase shift. You just hear the different music and KNOW the next phase has begun. Starting with the normal boss theme where you have to keep the cannons offline otherwise you're being hit with 4 attacks per turn, then going into the normal enemy battle theme as the boss only uses the one attack that while strong, is only single target. Then the final boss theme kicks in as that same attack now hits your ENTIRE PARTY and you realize you gotta kill this thing now before it causes a party wipe.
When the music changes for a 2nd time, you know it's time to get serious. Phase 3 Arsenal was broken. Even at max 999 health, you could still be 2 shot.
I think it was some sort of planetary protection system that went haywire. Correct me if I'm wrong though it's been almost 2 years since I played it last.
I always had a 2 Human, 2 Mutant party... I was huge into grinding even when I was a child... God I miss this game... I still have it but it's at my parents house.
I remember playing my dad's file of this game a long time ago. It looked a bit different, but the boss was the same. I accidentally deleted that file. I've been looking for this for a while.
I remember forming a master plan to steal my 18 year old cousins gameboy slim and this game when I was 10, I succeeded. I was a little bastard, a good kid otherwise, but If I wanted something I did what I needed to do till i got it. I played the whole game in the dark at night when everyone was asleep using an LED light from a pikachu figurine I had so no one would know i had a gameboy (my family was poor, its no excuse but i make none anyway, fuck you if you want to hate) that required 2 AAA batteries and lasted 6 hours each duo, including the gameboy slim which required 2 AAA batteries lasting 6 hours also, the perfect storm, and it was a mystery to all why I spent my pocket money on batteries. I remember getting to this final boss, and failing for months at the final form, until one day I finally beat it with the same shit levels, only that particular time using a plan I'd skipped doing homework the night before so i could put it together. One of the greatest days of my life. I never felt more intelligent.
I had this on the old first gen gameboy. Like any saga game it was frustrating and I was the 11 year old shaking his gameboy in rage at those boss battles . I must've fought Odin 10 times . But finally beating Arsenal to that dope song was so worth the 850 million hours of gameplay and grinding .
Clutch victory, I could never beat this boss as a young teen, then just randomly won when i replayed it some years later haha. Also, LOVED the music and then OH WHAT DO YOU KNOW it's Uematsu!
I loved that boss music.... Is there a remix of this somewhere, with real instruments or so? ^^ I could imagine something with violins... and from min 3, with piano ^^
Right, it's actually part of the SaGa game series. It was given a Final Fantasy name at the time in order to sell more copies in North America since FF1 for the NES was s smash hit.
haha Yeah I know there's waaay more difficult character combinations you can use. That's why I like these games, you can decide the difficulty based on what kind of character builds you want. I still have the original cartridges for these but I don't have a gameboy to play them on anymore. Thats where emulators come in handy I guess. Weird thing was I got all 3 from the same garage sale for $1 each.
Right it's not even supposed to be a Final Fantasy game. Its part of the SaGa series but back in the day, the Final Fantasy name was put on it to help game sales.
Nice! ;) Back when I used to play this, I had one of those giant original white with greenish screen gameboys. Then later I traded FF2 temporarily for my friend's FF3 and I never got it back. But now I have a DS and flashcard so I just play FF2 & FF3 on the DS! :D
@Buggaton there were several parts of this game that really really tough enemies attack you every 2-3 steps, so what you did was save every couple steps and when you got attacked, turn it off and back on then walk 2 more steps etc.. made it so much easier
I remember having the most awesome remix of the final battle (last song that plays), and now I can't find it anywhere. I can't wait for the remake on DS.
i beat this game 2 times from the start and i can say this game is really really good. also, the arsenal battle was really fun because it's not a easy battle.
Using the 7 Sword is the best way to own this boss. They drop occasionally from an enemy (forget its name) that looks like the love child of a ghost and cactus. Lol. Anyhow, it's a rare as heck drop, but it's powerful as all hell in the fact that it can hit up to 7 times (hence the name) and each hit is at the very least ad powerful as Excalibur. I took a long time to get 4 of them and when I took on Arsenal I literally went thru the 1st & 2nd stages in 1 round each. The last stage was 3 rounds if I'm remembering correctly only because I concentrated on having 2 of my party (mutants btw) focus on healing. Takes work to get the 7 sword, but man, so worth it.
Thanks. I had FF Adventure and FFL3 before too, and those were much easier for me back then. I sold them to a friend long ago. Heh, I used to think FFA was the first in the series, so I missed out on the real FFL1.
The one that is of the first stage in the arsenal battle is called "Dreadful Fight" the standard boss track, the 3:00 one is "Save the World". The DS remake of this game had remastered tracks for both songs, and they are excellent
My party's much worse, I have 2 robots dealing damage with a Gungnir and the other with missiles. I have one mutant that's useless, and the other heals the party. I can last about 3 turns after the part where it bring out the smasher, but I always lose. I'm using the save file I had from over ten years ago, and I'm gonna keep trying till I win.
awesome gameboy game i bought this at a boot sale a few weeks ago lose cart for 50p what a steal eh. well i saw pitfall gameboy advance boxed and what was inside this. on the plus side i got this and a box of pitfall so if i find pitfall loose cart just put that in there. anyway. the gameplay addictive, the graphics awesome, the music good. the sound great. would i recommend this in anybody's gameboy collection yes. if you find it cheap like i did buy it if not emulate it. cause this game can be expensive. and it is 94 per cent on the gameboy rare rating. overall i give this 10 out of 10.
Oh wow man I got this for ten bucks and I only got it because the owner recommended it to me because he knows I like Golden Sun Dark Dawn and Pokémon and Tales of Symphonia thank god he did because this is my favorite game! Right on! XD I laughed so hard when I beat my first wild monsters and they said that :)
Man I had trouble with that one, mainly because I had 2 humans and 2 robots, no good healers and had to level the mana of one of my humans until I barely beat him.
BTW this is not Final Fantasy, it is SaGa, they just used Final Fantasy just to increase sales of it in the US. Akitoshi Kawazu: An Executive Producer of Square Enix and the the head of Square Enix's Production Team 2, is the one who created the whole SaGa Series. He also designed FF2 (NES) so that's why the same level up system from that game is in this series.
AH. Well if you have some free time you should go to gametrailers and check out the 13 part Final Fantasy Retrospective they have there. Most of the Wikipedia entries are based on the information in those retrospectives.
The Arsenal is the planets "security system" and after Apollo attempts to assemble the 77 pieces of MAGI, to become a god, something seems to be missing. What Apollo, and everyone else for that matter, (with the exception of the Guardians) didn't know, is there was another piece of MAGI, hidden deep within the Final Dungeon. After you retrieve the final MAGI,you defeat Apollo, and piece all MAGI together to form the goddess Isis. But the plant begins to tremble violently, malfunctioning Arsenal.
to beat this arsenal i use a monster who got a absorb attack lol ( in my party i have 2 robot and 2 monster) ( if u wish to finish the game quickly it the best way) but if ur patient and want to trained ur squad like the choice of AR anyway i was happy too to beat him for the 1st time
@Neo1715 oh. I never did that :O I never ran from a fight and therefore ended up with 99 str, agi and mag on each person that needed each stat and 99def on everyone.
Really, I remember playing this when I was younger and beating it in one day...needless to say I didn't do anything else that day lol but I think there are a lot of people who run after many of the battles so there characters never get any better.
man i remember getting to the final boss felt harder than fighting him because you could never run from any of the monsters on the way there and had to waste weapons to fight them
Daniel Debert i think its called boiling blood. There used to be an input code on the title screen where you could access all the game soundtracks and sound fx. Me and my friends used to jam out to that and the final music 'save the world' when we were like 10 years old
I have beaten FFL 1 like 40 times with all kinds of different combos and 2 humans and 2 mutants was always the easiest combo to beat the game with. I beat FFL2 using this combo as well. Never could find 3 even though I went to Toys R' Us looking for it like every other weekend when I was growing up. It was always sold out.
Gah! This brings back so many bad memories. I hated this game so much, but I somehow finished it. This was the game that fueled my hatred for the 3 Final Boss thing. Can't there just be ONE end boss?!
When i played this the only thing i did was take a robot with me and pimp him up until he was invincible. He was always the only character left alive in every battle.
Xcalibur...almost had the whole name by that time...I got the roms of the FFL series, but I've only done the opening...I've gotten a lot further in FFA LOL 4 of your ppl beat up one of them and Bob single handedly destroys the others :P
@MrJyonouchi heh, 5 month necro here, but whatever.. I actually cheated a bit on that part, I would save every 2 steps, and when I got a battle, switch it off and on, very effective =p also, LOVED this game, had the same kind of replayability that the old pokemon games had, must have gone through red and silver at least 5 times each
I could never figure out how to beat this boss. My team was all robots... I found it rather stupid that no matter how much armor they had, they could never survive the smasher launch enough times to win the fight... But I didn't know any other way to get past Venus (or was it some other boss... I know I chose robots for a reason!) so I gave up T_T

Hyper is pretty useful on Odin, doesnt affect him, but it kills the OdinClaws and Slepniers... very very helpful... i used to never be able to beat him, lol... ON MAH SPECIAL EDITION POKEMON GAMEBOY!!!!
It's amazing how I still remember that music in detail after almost 20 years.. ^^
Same. It's been so long and I never completed this game. Apollo was the worst
3:00. Now it gets serious. Time to Save The World!
"oh god it just whipped out the smasher!!!" i still have nightmares about that dam weapon

Seven sword. Although it may be a bitch to get, when you do get it you are damn near invincible.
From those darn Haniwa.
Right, it's actually part of the SaGa game series. It was given a Final Fantasy name at the time in order to sell more copies in North America since FF1 for the NES was s smash hit.
Holy hell. This battle music is awesome. :)

Correct. Just like how Final Fantasy Adventure is originally part of the Mana series. You've seen the GT retrospective too huh?
@requiemlarp The best musics I know on Game Boy are those from Gargoyle's Quest - they are gorgeous, I would love to hear them re-orchestrated.

AR, might I suggest spamming the Flare spell on Arsenal on the next playthrough?
You mean where you save on a certain tile and then power off and back on again for an enemy encounter that gives you +stats/hp?

aegis to block all damage, and counter to counter the attack. Flare to power through the first part.
Oh shit! Breaking out the Glass in the first round huh? ;)
Bad move with the hyper though, doesn't affect bosses.
