Eric Draven true and those metal heads are the narrow minded posers unwilling to explore the potential Metal has .. they are actually the real pussies while they keep stating otherwise.. what a shame!!
Italian rapper/trapper Ghali just released this year a song called “Walo”, where he raps on a drum base that has similar vibe and rhythm to this one. in an interview earlier this year he declared “no one’s ever rapped on a drum pattern like this”. How cute.
I wish people would stop hating on the rap. Look, there are hundreds of metal band nowadays and they're all pretty similar, the genre needs something new just to give it some diversity. Hacktivist are this diversity. Plus they are fucking amazing live.

Fully agreed man. Metal hasn't exactly been doing well these days (unfortunately) and hybrids like this will be the saviour of the entire genre. We are in the midst of a musical revolution my friends!
This reminds me of the early LP or Limp Bizkit albums. (Meteora, Hybrid Theory, TDBY, etc.) But this is just a lot heavier, subtracting the use of heavy vocals. Even so, this is fucking awesome. Definitely buying this album. \m/
When the song started I was like "cool Djent riff, quite nice atmosphere... Some standard stuff, but it's good." then the vocals came in and I was like "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAT", an undefined type of what. And after the chorus was over, I was in love!

I've had the longest hate-relationship to rap since the dawn of time, but this thing right here, forces me to reconsider. Both genres (djent and rap) are so rhythm oriented that I wonder why it hasn't been invented before. Stellar job!
It's really nice to see metal bands breaking away from what is deemed to be normal/proper metal. I understand that a lot of metalheads wouldn't like this, but it's important to see it as a band, not as part of a genre. Enjoy the innovation.
Is it harder to write rap lyrics to a song with odd time signatures? I mean, common rap are supposed to work on 4/4, i don't know how they wrote rap lyrics to fit weird time signatures.
Mariana Perreira There is one time signature, it's just syncopated, syncopation doesnt mean it has multiple sigs, that's a polymeter, but nonetheless I get what you mean.
Mariana Perreira Well, math metal would be a song based on an aspect of math, or a number, like counting notes in Pi, (3,1,4,1,5,9,2,6), whereas this is some kind of Progressive Metal or, if you like, Djent.
TheRealSonicYouth Elvis was a white guy who made black music... And Hacktivist's singer is a black guy making white music? At least that's my guess. Not that you have to be any race to like any kind of music, but most metal bands are full of white dudes
I can tell he knows what he is doing the production of this is actually very nice I would just say the cymbals need to be more prominent just a constructive criticism no more
The point is, Hacktivist is doing something within the progressive/djent genre that hasn't or is not deemed to be normal, and that's what's nice to see.
This... This is why I love Metal. Because it's the most insanely diverse genre on the planet occupied by some of the most talented people on the planet.

I love heavy metal(meshuggah, animals as leaders, opeth etc) and rappers like Kendrick Lamar and J Cole ect.. Hacktivist is such a good combo of genres
What is this? A djent version of Nu Metal with some industrial influences thrown in? I sat threw the old Nu Metal in the 90s and early 2000s... Hopefully, this doesn't become a trend. I wish Hacktivist all the best, they make Nu Nu Metal that is listenable, but they could open a can of worms that gives us a new Limp Bizkit.
I think that would be a great thing! with all the shit out there its cool and refreshing to hear a band put a heavier more technical spin on nu-metal with the modern djent kind of sound.
Come around again when you can talk about KoRn and such.. Limb Bizkit was a trend runner not a bloody pioneer .. They just rode the wave but brought nothing to the table really
Using the word "haters" in a song like this makes me cringe. I don't mind the rap side of it, I think it actually is a nice change and they do it quite well, but why do they have to bring the tough-guy attitude along with it? Regardless, I like the song.
I think it would sound better if they added some screams in it. I love the Djent sound of it thou. The way the top string rings out in that deep thickness...awesome!!! Makes me want a 7 string guitar
I hear a strong Meshuggah/Djent influence in this and surprisingly the rap marries very nicely with the music style. Great work! Looking forward to the EP.
I read here some metal purists. I think you troos kvlt suck. If in metal history musicians didn't try new things, it would be dead by now. What is the problem mixing rap with it? It's not evil? Not everything in metal is to sound evil. This band is about opening conscience to political issues, and since I am left wing activist, I can identify myself to them. Ok, maybe they have some influences from nu metal bands, like limp biskit, linkin park, wtv... but what is the problem? Don't they have a way better sound?
If it isn't about Satan or gore it's not b00tal or true kvlt! How dare someone make a song with meaningful lyrics! I'm really glad that they're trying something different and not caring what the br00tal kiddies think. Metal is all about not caring about how others perceive you and this band is doing that perfectly.
i really like this band and shame on people that criticize the blend... i listen to bands like between the buried and me, after the burial, intervals, dream theater. when i was younger i loved e-town concrete and downset but hated limp bizkit lol :P
This would have far more impact if it'd have some dynamics instead of some mastering fuck destroying it by compressing the shit out of it. Digital clipping all over the shop. No low end punch in that kick at all - just noise. What a shame.
Popular music takes the piss, this is a really good song but I bet this sounded so much better before they mastered it and compressed the life out of it.
MrLmaoLover considering I work as a sound engineer for living, I'd absolutely love to be given the chance to fix it. Gladly! Why are you taking it so personally? Were you the mastering engineer for this song? If so, I'll give you some pointers. If not, then you should share my frustration if you like the song but would like to hear it with better sound quality.
You're saying this music is just noise... ,lots of palm muting and compressing the sound, it's typical in this style, and he's playing the way he played in Heart Of A Coward. I like the sound but many don't, and music will always be like that, someone saying that it sucks, others saying that it should sound better and and people that actualy like the music goddamit, if you dont like it, don't play it.
MrLmaoLover I'm sorry, you have completely misunderstood me. I love this music and the playing. I am talking about the mixing and mastering of the recording, not how their instruments sound lol. As I stated in the first post, I am blaming the Mastering Engineer.
Anyone know if there's an instrumental version of this? I really like the song but the rapping just isn't for me. No offense to them or anyone who likes it, I just don't particularly like it.
Cameron Losch from Born of Osiris put up a link to show people the breakdown, and of course I loved it. So I just listened to the breakdown, because I wasnt much of a fan of the rap. But then I listened to the whole song once or twice, and then Elevate a few times, then False Idols and yeah by then it was loving it.
Wombat Sceptre Yea I've listened to the EP a lot the past week. I definitely feel like i wouldn't like the rapping if they weren't British though. Their accents just give it a flare for me I guess.
i agree with both of you. btbam is probably the most innovative nowadays. what theyre doing is absolutely frickin groudbreaking. but i still agree that its nice to see a another band actually break away from the usual djent even if it is in a much easier simple way.
quite a lot of bands like this (read meshuggah) have crazy time signatures, but with the cymbals being spaced in crotchets so that they kind of ignore the bar lines.
The kind of people that say that heavy guitar music and rap shouldn't mix are the kind of people that this band talk about in a lot of their music. People living in within borders and boundaries aid to the borders and boundaries our global society in. What this band is doing is doing what they have to do to get their message across, before you attempt to break down social borders, you must show that you're able to break them down in your general life i.e. in this case, their music!
Limp bizkit was just rap and metal thrown together. This seamlessly mixes the lyrical complexity of real rap with the heaviness and melody of real metal. Rap can just be about crime and thuggery, and metal can just be sloppy power chords and shouting, but this is totally different. This is a breath of fresh air. Metal needs bands like this to weed out the narrow-mindedness and elitism that is shamefully so prevalent in our beloved genre.
“With the heaviness of real metal”........you couldn’t be more wrong bud. This shit is basic djent. Bizkit had more metal and heavy shit with actual riffs. The intro to hot dog is one of the best riffs I’ve ever heard and rips way harder than generic djent.
I think the rhythms of rapping and the rhythms of "djent" music go hand in hand, the rappers can excute lyrics sharper than screamers, and they can say more since it doesnt take as much breath than it does screaming. Hopefully this band has potential, and they're not just a one trick pony with the combination of rap and progressive metal
Actually Meshuggah was interviewed about the genre Djent popping up and they said they were proud to influence young musicians like these guys and making something their own. Open mind, open heart. That's what metal and hardcore are all about.
I've never been a fan of rap nor this kind of metal sound they are producing, but once you've added the two - holy shit. it sounds good, not sure about the lyrics, but they are creating something new. Good luck Hacktivist!
There are not many metal bands out there with a 6 string bass and a 8 string guitar and 2 rap dudes... with great lyrics. I really like this band.

I finally landed on some words to describe this sound: "P.O.D. meets Periphery"
This might be some of the most unique music I've heard in along time. It's fucking sick
No matter what kind of vocals go over it, you can't deny a sick groove.
I thought that no matter what kind of groove backs the track, the vocals should matter?

I appreciate (real) metal and (real) rap separately, but this is the first time I genuinely like a metal+rap hybrid. Great stuff. Keep it up.
All what they need is some features with some aweasome screamers like Phil of Whitechapel
And Phil's lyrical themes, toned down a little, would fit perfectly here.

I'm kind of sick of screaming :/ it seems to played out and trendy at times. It's nice to hear something not screaming in a genre like this
Andrew Bielec Saying screaming is trendy in metal is like saying singing is trendy in 95% of all music.
at least with singing you have more of a range of sound than just Frys, Squeals, Growls, inhales

This band is fucking original. They mix really heavy guitars with rap style singing.
weed + beer + Hacktivist = WFF
Sooooo HEAVY! I'm not gonna lie, I'm loving this. Only rap-rock fusion in ages worth listening to.
Never in my life would i have thought I would have heard this style of music... I like it..
I'm the type of person to try out a new genre of music. And this... I approve. Djent rap.
Glad I found this group, sick music and vocals!!
my all time favourite song from these guys
Is that a Skervesen Raptor I spy? Every time I hear or see a Skervesen guitar it make me want one more and more
Wow. I'm impressed. Glad I found this band. I love the 8 string and drums.
It's always lovely to see a mature discussion in youtube. Great backing of your arguments guys ;)
This is the most unique piece of music I've heard in many years.
djent + rap = awesome !!!!!
salute from north borneo :)
this song gets my juices flowing
Actually Meshuggah was interviewed about the genre Djent popping up and they said they were proud to influence young musicians like these guys and making something their own. Open mind, open heart. That's what metal and hardcore are all about.
Rap+ Kickass Metal = SUCCESS!!
Many have tried to do the whole rap/metal thing but NOBODY did it until HACKTIVIST! They did it right!!!!!
Finally a new element of heavy hip hop!!!
I've never been a fan of rap nor this kind of metal sound they are producing, but once you've added the two - holy shit. it sounds good, not sure about the lyrics, but they are creating something new. Good luck Hacktivist!
3:00! We need more noisegate!
