    In my opinion, John Denver sang about two different things... his connection to the spirit world (most of his songs), and his own life experiences (especially about his wife, family). This song is about his wife, and how he loves her so much, but has to go so often to sing at various venues, and the sadness it brings to both her and him, of having to be apart so often. This song tells us a big part about him as a person. It tells us about the level of love, compassion, and caring he had for that special person in his life; his partner (but also tells us about his innate nature and compassion for all things too).
    Regarding his spiritual songs.... You could put the words of those many songs into chapters, and create a new Bible. Dwell on that, and you might see (and hear) what he was trying to tell us all. There is enormous wisdom in those songs. Don't mistake a song that seems to be about his own personal life, but is actually about what matters, for us all to live a life that will get us to the right place (if you know what I mean ;-) "Friends With You", for example.... it's TIME who "will remember you, think of you, and pray for you". Let those with an ear to hear......hear.

    I grew up on John Denver. As much as I listen to bands like Disturbed and Sabaton, there will always be a special place in my heart for him.

    I've performed this song so many times across the years. I always wondered why John seemed to speed through it. When I do it, I allow the words to choose their own tempo, and the tragedy that they carry always aches the most in a more deliberate tempo. John's version, although I love it to no end, seems to counterintuitive in its upbeat tempo. The line that cuts the deepest is:
    -------------As it is, the time we've had is worth the time alone;
    -------------lying by your side, the greatest peace I've ever known...
    What more can one possibly say to offer up a love that has no bounds?
    When I sing this line, a tear is always there to provide the harmony.

    We have to fight when it's time to leave because there will be so many times you let me down and so many times you play around even though ' they don't mean a thing ' .

    John died on my birthday.
    I had just moved away from Monterey CA. Like 6 months earlier.
    I don’t know what that must mean, but it affected me terribly

      I attended John's last Fort Worth concert in 1997, 2 weeks before the news came. The Will Rogers Auditorium will never have the same feel. He lived in Fort Worth, went to high school there (born in Roswell, NM, 1943; Aliens got there in 47. I guess that's as soon as they could make it; poor, poor slimy space critters), joked some and commented about it all. He seemed distant, then.

      I had just moved from Monterey Bay Area back to my hometown in South Carolina, when I heard John Denver died, on my birthday! That hurt twice as much. I saw John in my hometown when he was doing his Grandmas feather bed concerts.
