I appreciate the secondary test at the end of the video where you show the performance of a single WAP. We install these all the time and would have done a project like this with 2-3 units depending on the client wanting outdoor coverage or not. While I love the "Tesla Model S Plat" approach, clients should also know they don't need to spend $10K to have great WIFI in their homes. Thanks for an awesome video. We will definitely share.
Thank you for this. At my work the WiFi that was installed before my time, the APs were actually installed too close together, causing issues with the service the users were getting. We just had a wireless survey done and the recommendation is to remove 8 out of 18 access points. 🤯
Also, I’m glad that there are more consumer friendly lower costs versions if the stuff Linus uses for his wifi. We use eero mesh wifi devices, and they came with our wifi package, but they’re more in the small hundreds, band I think even come in bundles. Tho you will have to buy a switch or something, cuz they don’t have more than 1 Ethernet port like most modems.

Hi Linus, as you mention the issues with LG TV connectivity, some TVs just have bad network cards. Take this from former AT&T tech support, I dealt with this issue on daily basis.
For anyone confused by the speed being better while standing still: the way the signal is decoded is by the AP treating the physical degradation/attenuation/reflection/etc. as a matrix solution to an equation (it's called the 'channel' factor, a literal physical description of what the signal's path is doing), it can then use that to properly read the incoming signal (basically clean signal * channel effects = received signal, received signal / channel effects = clean signal). So standing still means the channel effects don't change, so there's no need to recompute a solution due to signal loss.
@@Tosti_bakker Yeah, I considered giving the proper matrix explanation of the equation but I figured talking about inverse matrices and least square approximations might be a bit much

Because of you guys I’ll have to remodel my home so I have a server room where I’ll put all of this sick stuff you show recently! This internet speed is amazing!
The main value add of good Wifi and networking is it makes a decent Internet package worthwhile. The converse is that crappy Wifi makes high speed Internet past 100 Mbps effectively valueless. It’s a necessity to have good Wifi coverage and to never settle for ISP-provided devices.
As riDDimann said most people for any serious reason even at the home level is going to rely on a hard wired connection. Why spend 600+ for a solid wifi router when depending on your location you may need additional access points anyways when for Likely less than 300 for a couple cheap switches and if you're willing to terminate your own wires you can do an entire house and get the maximum throughput of your connection.
Just hard wire your place with min. CAT6 if you got the walls open anyways, much more future proof. This 10k wifi setup will be outdated in 5 years and not everybody will have a sponsor ;)
"Just like money can buy this sponsor spot" Linus is not only advertising glassware, but he is also advertising where you can pay them to put your ad in the video.
As a technician in the technology field, you guys should know that when you're toning out shielded cat cable, it's very difficult to get an inductive tone with the wand on the sheathing of the cable. You would be better off testing the ends of the cable, or if you had a different toner, you could connect the positive to the cat cable, and the negative to earth ground. That makes them SCREAM😂. Super helpful
Yes and no, the induction should be just fine if the source is powerful enough. Your standard toner is only 9V and doesn't give much amplification. Shielded cable can really complicate things, so the shield should be clipped in this case which would provide great sheath detection of tone. We do it all the time.
@@MrAdeelAH I think because of different regulations, some places say that you cannot have concrete floors above ground level, so the floors would have to be made with wood.
Yeah, that's so weird. I don't think i've ever lived in a house that didn't have concrete floors. I would be more surprised if it wasn't concrete, if i'm honest.
We live on a farm and we recently got a Netgear Orbi mesh wifi system. My brother claims he got wifi on the other hill across the road, probably half a KM away and was able to send messages. Goes to show how much impact a wall can have on connectivity.

5:40 There is a relatively cheap substance called RTV silicon. I would recommend using some in this instance if you would like to keep your connectors safe from water & corrosion damage long term.
I'd be extremely happy with 100Mbps for my wifi, I sometimes get 40-50 on good days which is rare. Most of the time if have to put up with 14Kbps-4Mpbs.
When else would you do it? I mean you need to cable that stuff... imagine being all done, setting up wifi and noticing you misplanned something and need a cable somewhere you really can't easily get to now.
Uh...yeah. seems like the best time to do it, considering routing the ethernet cable through walls and ceilings is easier when the walls and ceilings aren't finished.
As someone who’s house recently finished being a construction zone, hell yeah that’s the best time to do it, when else are your ceilings, floorboards and even the inside of your walls accessible without making a huge mess? Especially as I’m in a plasterboard on mortar situation for the walls and can’t just fish a cable through the wall space. Now I’m going to need to find a weekend when the SO’s out to prep, install and clean up a roof AP, assuming I don’t need to fix any cockups in the process
What I dont get is why didnt he mount the access points in the ceiling? When the drywallers come in to finish off they can just put an access panel in. Everything would be hidden then. Unless it needs to be in the open for some reason but if its going through concrete it should be fine.
Just to add to this make sure you set ofdm only and adjust your minrates for roaming on your main ssid. The signal on these waps are pretty crazy and you wont roam nicely. Also setup the wifi calling option and enable the auto adjust ap power under services

Oh yea, matrices... I know those

Yup.. I thought he was going to use a dongle hence my initial confusion
The main value add of good Wifi and networking is it makes a decent Internet package worthwhile. The converse is that crappy Wifi makes high speed Internet past 100 Mbps effectively valueless. It’s a necessity to have good Wifi coverage and to never settle for ISP-provided devices.
Also: Good network speed for using a NAS and/or a local media server, not just for internet access.
You know you can use this thing called a cable and get a 100% stable Gbit connection for next to nothing.

Linus, you planning on sharing your wifi with the neighbors, with that stadium capacity for connections?
As a technician in the technology field, you guys should know that when you're toning out shielded cat cable, it's very difficult to get an inductive tone with the wand on the sheathing of the cable. You would be better off testing the ends of the cable, or if you had a different toner, you could connect the positive to the cat cable, and the negative to earth ground. That makes them SCREAM😂. Super helpful
I use toners frequently, I've never heard of only connecting positive but it sounds like it makes sense.. I'll have to check it out next time!
Yes and no, the induction should be just fine if the source is powerful enough. Your standard toner is only 9V and doesn't give much amplification. Shielded cable can really complicate things, so the shield should be clipped in this case which would provide great sheath detection of tone. We do it all the time.

Linus: Well let's do the wifi now
When else would you do it?
That is literally the best time to do wiring when its already opened
What I dont get is why didnt he mount the access points in the ceiling? When the drywallers come in to finish off they can just put an access panel in. Everything would be hidden then. Unless it needs to be in the open for some reason but if its going through concrete it should be fine.
Just to add to this make sure you set ofdm only and adjust your minrates for roaming on your main ssid. The signal on these waps are pretty crazy and you wont roam nicely. Also setup the wifi calling option and enable the auto adjust ap power under services
